The THUNDERBIRD is FORD's Personal Luxury Car

The Ford Thunderbird created a market niche that eventually became known as the Personal Luxury car. After having spent some time with the seventh generation of the model, I understand why it was associated with luxury, it both looks and drives like a director's car, floating along the road in complete silence and comfort.

I used to own a 1978 Mercury Cougar - the twin to the T-bird. It had a 351 Windsor. Yes they rode and drove like a dream. They were meant to be as comfortable and easy to drive as possible. On my dash was a badge that said "Ride Engineered". Indeed nothing made today compares to that ride and these cars were fantabulous on long road trips. I've driven but not owned a 1976 T-bird with a 460. Now THAT was a car. The '77 and later ones don't even compare...

These were comfortable, quiet , and powerful cars. I remember riding in T-birds, Cougars, and Elites in the 70's. The airconditioning blowing cool soft breezes and Donna Summer crooning on the 8 track while riding on the open highways. Life was good

I had a 77, and it was beautiful, and rode like a Lincoln. I loved that car, and it performed very well.

I had the 79 with brushed aluminum targa strip and the gold turbine wheels that the Lincoln shared. Burgundy, burgundy padded top, burgundy interior, big white wall tires and gold wheels. Bought it new and man I wish I still had it. Great car.

Yes, it is large, and comfortable, and quiet. Think about it this way; it is 870 miles from El Paso, Texas to Orange, Texas. What would you choose for that trip?

My parents had a '76 TBird. I loved that car. Has a 460 Police Interceptor engine. Former undercover police car. Newport, Ky police had 1 identical to it.

As a child I remember the vinyl seats and interior chrome bits would give me 3rd degree burn marks in the summertime.

That is a 78 t bird. You can tell by the chrome lining around the headlights, the 77 did not have that. I had a 77, light jade metallic mist T bird. Loved that car!!!

My first car was a ‘79 T-bird. It was light green with a 302 in it. Boy did I have some good memories in that one. I could tell you some stories. Ended up breaking the passenger seat in it one night when I was in the army. Lol. I was a little drunk getting ready to deploy and from what I remember she was a little heavy. My buddies never let me forget that one. Lol. I have many stories with that old car I kinda miss it.

Im 23. I learned to drive my dads 1978 thunderbird. I still remember him badgering me “easy on the gas”. The thing looked and drove good but was worn out so you barely had to tap the pedal for it to go “VVRROOMMM”. Loved it. In the winter he used to make me go outside and spend 10 minutes getting it to start and STAY running so he could go to work

I have a '79 'Bird convertible (one of 250 Ford-Authorized ACC conversions) black, black rag top, red interior with less than 30K miles. It's an absolute scream!
