As a GIANTS fan I can say that Jeff Hostetler holds a very unique and special place in our hearts. He is one of our heroes. His career deserves a very deep rewind an in depth look. He actually was a good QB and had one of the most unique careers in NFL history.

Loved hearing Summerall make the call here, too. What a block--Free rush to the punter with no one blocking Hostetler. How a QB could be on special teams, especially with his salary and chance to get hurt, is amazing. Another great story that no one ever talks about

Also, Hostetler was the 3rd string quarterback at the time behind Phil Simms and Jeff Rutledge. Incidentally, that would not be the only case where a backup quarterback appeared on special teams for the Giants in 1986, as arguably the turning point of Super Bowl XXI involved Rutledge being sent into the game with the punting unit early in the second half (with the Broncos barely leading 10-9) before audibling to a quarterback sneak to get a first down on the drive leading to Simms' touchdown pass to Mark Bavaro that put the Giants in the lead for good.

The enduring memory I have of Hostetler is that he somehow managed not to fumble in the end zone despite Bruce Smith grabbing his throwing arm by the wrist. Went as the most clutch safety in Super Bowl history instead, and the Giants held on by one point. Also pretty sure the downvote is John Teltschik.

The unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian is here to remind everyone you made the following videos related to this story: 1. How another quarterback, Joe Theismann, played special teams early in his career. 2. A Dumb Decision from the 1986 Chargers-Giants game. 3. How that Giants-Eagles game was the last Ron Jaworski would play for Philadelphia. 4. How the Giants got called for a controversial personal foul in a 1995 game against the Raiders on a quarterback slide. Hostetler was the Raiders quarterback on that play. Between those and your “Marangi” reference I’d say we’re rolling in the sponsorship royalty checks! See the comments of the video about how Bob Griese almost got traded to San Francisco for context as to this paragraph.

Sounds like they paid him to keep him out of the USFL moreso than to use him in the NFL, considering he didn’t even get to play in the preseason. Really cool moment on the blocked punt, though. A fun video idea, at least to me, would be the Vikings vs Lions game where Ponder struggled and got hurt, then Joe Webb led a huge comeback that almost won us the game.

Both of those Lions/Vikings games in 2011 were great. One had a big comeback by the Lions (down 20-0) that they won in overtime after the Calvin Willy Mays catch in OT and the other was the Vikings comeback that came up short (down 28-7) when Webb got sack stripped at the 1 yard line on the final play of the game (final score 34-28) 2011 Lions are the funnest team I've ever seen

Here's an idea for a video: Home Team possibly saves lives by getting blown out. 1976 AFC playoffs 1st round game - Steelers at Colts. Baltimore is losing badly by the 4th Q(final was 40-14 Steelers), so many fans leave early. A small plane crashes into the upper decks of Memorial Stadium, Baltimore. But no one is killed because that section was empty of fans. If, say, the game was still close at that point, people would have still been there watching, and there would certainly been injuries or worse.

@From-North-Jersey
@From-North-Jersey 3 жыл бұрын
Rumor has it that McConkey became Parcells punt returner of choice when he caught a punt in practice and immediately got clobbered so hard he was knocked unconscious but he didn't fumble. Parcells looked down at the out cold mcconkey as the other players laughed and tried to take the ball away from him which woke him up and caused him to start a fight over the ball. Parcells said "we found our punt returner". Then he told McConkey "If you ever fumble a punt your off the team". Of course I head this from a guy who swears he heard it from LT down at LT's old bar on route 17 while they were playing pinball next to each other.

Hostetler started at Penn State & he & a guy from my home town transferred to WVU together when Joe Paterno made QB Todd Blackledge the starter. Hard to believe but Penn State beat Mario’s Pitt in 1982 which was senior year for both QBs. Marino threw 5 INTs in that game. Penn State won the national championship & Blackledge was drafted by the Chiefs higher than Marino!!

What Hoss got by the Giants was directly because of the USFL vs NFL competition to sign players in general and especially from the draft class of 84. Young, Mike Rozier the highest rated RB, Reggie White and Zimmerman all would have been top 10 choices in the NFL draft. Young signed a $40M deal with the LA Express. So the other QB’s in the draft got larger contracts than normal. Even Boomer with the cheap Bengals.
