Mike Trout in high school wasn’t the 3x MVP Mike Trout we know now. He was still good, and he showed promise at the big league level, but truthfully it’s almost impossible to guess a guy is gonna be as good as Mike Trout in baseball one day. Considering his skill level and projections at the time, a 25th overall pick was logical and a 1st overall pick was illogical. we just have recency bias

A few seasons ago, I won a contest that gave me the most expensive tickets in the park, along with views of the indoor batting cage before the game. We were fortunate enough to see Mike take BP, and to our surprise, he started off batting lefthanded, and just clobbering the ball. Then he switched to right for a bit, and then he was good to go. (Footnote: he hit a righthanded homer in the game, helping the Halos win!)

It’s easy to look back and say that Mike Trout should’ve been drafted higher now that we know how good Mike Trout is. He could’ve also been a bust and we would’ve looked back and said he shouldn’t have been drafted at all. Scouts were taking a chance on a high schooler who played in a small town with a lower level of competition compared to college guys and big city high schoolers. And that’s not including the fact that the other 25 guys were most likely more polished at the time of the draft. Definitely drafted in the correct spot. It’s less so that he was underrated and more so that the Angels got a hell of a return on their investment.

did the same, we used to play a lot of pick-up games, 3 or 4 people to a side, if you hit to the opposite field it was an out, but we'd experiment on both sides, i found out i had a much smoother swing left-handed, due to a stronger right arm. and because i had a dominant side my right eye picked up the pitch better. started switch hitting that year, my average and power went up.
