Yes, if you are a leader with totalitarian ambitions, then North Korea is absolutely the example to emulate. What Ceausescu did not take into consideration are actual racial differences between Romanians and Koreans, which were very much real factors in him not being able to emulate the system of total obedience that is present in North Korea, but also a substrate of East Asian culture.

It's important to note that Romania still has good relationships with North Korea and hosts foreign exchange student programs. I can confirm this for engineering schools, but I assume it probably happens elsewhere. While we aren't buddy buddy like before, Romania is probably the Western state with the best relation to North Korea even if it isn't much. Additionally, Romania is still great friends with Vietnam as their former (I think he quite recently) PM did Construction University in Bucharest and claims those were the best years of his life. All in all even with the sudden shift from communism to somewhat functional democracy, Romania kept relations with most communist countries and we still consider them friends and want them to do well.

The "official" cost number of the palace of parliament is, by most historians, guides, and others educated on the subject, considered highly inaccurate. The "unofficial" number is deemed to be between 9-12 billion euros.

One thing you did not touch on was that the removal of Ceausescu from power was a big blow in the NK populace, with people disappearing for talking about it and much more internally. All I mean is the relationship went both ways somehow.

Back then NK was still functional and thriving (to a certain degree), so it was easier to be taken aback by elaborate performances & decorations. It's reputation sharply worsened in the 90s, I think - when they went through a massive famine.
@cristibrad67424 ай бұрын
@@dyawr NK was bankrolled by the SU and once the free money stopped in the 90's for obvious reasons, they got stuck in LIMBO to this day. SK was poor because it only got peace and quiet from the bald eagle and whatever the brits (have not done propper research) still had around that hemisphere and as such they built their great nation with their own labor and should always be proud of that.

4:45 this and the 1978 visit were the point of no return, it got so bad that in the 80's songs in english were banned and musicians werent allowed to sing them (or any other language), also having any sort of foreign currency could have put you in jail because you were labeled as a 'traitor of the state'
