It’s so true . I’ve been through two hurricanes now , one pretty bad , and have found that people really come together . Get out there and know your neighbors . Even if they aren’t just like you they have lots to offer. Everyone focuses on people being bad. The truth is people are social beings and tend to come together when shit gets weird . If you live in an area where you can’t trust your neighbors, then it’s time to move. I live in coastal NC and we take care of one another.

We had a major power outage up here in AK in Wasilla and Fairbanks this winter and people's pipes froze. I would recommend buying a couple of kerosene heaters and 5 gallon cans of kerosene. One can go under the crawl space to heat the pipe areas. Mr buddy heaters are propane heaters. They make a hose kit to connect up to the gas grill propane tanks.

Great stuff. I had the advantage of parents who grew up during the Great Depression. That experience made indelible marks on both. My dad, in particular, knew what hungry was. I guess you could say that it was like going through a disaster that lasted years. Although they never actually said it, I could tell that, because they had gone through it they must have vowed to themselves to never go hungry again because my mother always made sure that there were weeks, if not months, of canned food on hand - both commercial and home canned. They passed that along to my siblings and I. I guess I never considered myself to be a prepper but I have always made sure that we have everything we need to sustain ourselves for long periods of time. I'm sure many of you grew up with parents or grandparents who taught you the same things. Where I live experienced massive ice storms back to back in the early 2,000's and we were without power and unable to get to town for nearly 3 weeks. We were well fed, warm and protected the entire time. It was funny because my oldest daughter said after it was all over, "I think Dad was disappointed when things got back to normal. He was definitely in his element!"

Nice video! As far has Baofeng radios and other ham radio gear go, in a real world emergency there are no restrictions to the ham bands. I’m an amateur extra class ham and teach this stuff as my way to give back to a community that’s given me so much. So that being said, it’s not hard to get licensed and by getting with a local ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) group you can get tons of good training on radios as well as other non-ham specific stuff.
@RobinP5563 жыл бұрын
@011011 0110111 Well, the time to talk about reception is before an emergency. In an emergency there should be no doubt what reception will be, then it’s time to use comms to coordinate.
@saxmusicmail3 жыл бұрын
Would you buy a gun for self defense, put it away in a closet and not shoot it? Then when time came to need it, it's not sighted in, you are not well familiar with it. Well, same with radio gear. If not licensed, you can't use it. You can't practice. You won't know what frequencies to use. And the Baofengs are difficult to set up as far as frequencies. DO NOT depend on use of repeaters. They likely won't be up and running after a hurricane. It's not hard to get a Tech license. Many clubs have "ham crams", an all day class and test session afterwards. You have to be really stupid to not pass after that. And Robin, I'm a CVE, too.
@RobinP5563 жыл бұрын
@011011 0110111 No, on an event there will be Mets controlling all radio traffic to prevent chaos. If you’re not accustomed to working within the local nets you’re going to stick out, plus, even without a net ham radio operators have their own distinct way of taking on the radio, so if you’re not a licensed ham it’s going to show. That being said, if you’re the one in need of assistance in an emergency pick up whatever radio you have and call “break” or “emergency” and all non-emergency traffic will ceases while you talk your way through it.

For storm areas, things like tarps, paracord, and ducttape are really valuable to have on hand for something like a broken window or a hole in the roof. @@f5tornadeau Your right. I was just reflecting on the effort being made to purge our military of anyone with a “contrary” perspective of current events.
