It's so crazy that when girls post half-naked pictures or dressing at a certain way, people call them "sluts." Then when guys post half-naked pictures or dresses at a certain way people call them "hot." Like what? I think that the word slut should be turned to a positive way because if women wants to dress a certain way, like why do people need to judge women? The word slut just have so much negative meaning, but we need to change that meaning into a positive way.

I think it's highly improbable to get everyone to stop using the word slut. we should instead, change the definition. I feel like we can; we've changed the definition of thousands of words. we can change this one too.

also, with the whole bad example for kids thing; my thinking, if I were a parent, would be not that it's bad for them to dress in a revealing way, but that they are scared that men will oversexualize their children. like, that's their babies walking around, and some 30 yr old douch is cat calling them. they don't want their kids to live in a world where they don't feel safe so they force their daughters to dress modesty. but that doesn't stop anything. it makes the problem worse, it basically accepts that behavior and makes it "ok" because they aren't "dressing appropriately ." they think that their children seeing a confident, sexy woman is "bad", because of they dress that way they'll get oversexualized by older men and will be in danger.

+grace reynolds I agree. I have been asking myself this question for a while and I could not think of an answer. Your Comment made me wonder. People want their kids to be open minded and of the 21st century, but they also want them to stay close to the past or 'their roots'. Many kids might not understand that and might sway either way. One might become to close minded and one might be 'too welcoming' to new things. The welcoming is a good thing.... But it can really confuse the child itself

But the main question is; What will be the definition of slut after we change it? will it be positive? Or will it stay negative? I don't think it is possible to give a positive meaning to the word slut. And it will stay negative, so after a few years, this will again become a problem. And if the definition of slut will become "person who sleeps with a lot of people" ; does that sound better? i don't think so. I do think that everyone can do what they want with their body, but society thinks that some things (like this) are negative. The only solution to this problem is to try to change the judgement of society. Damn dat is looonng.

I think that you should have the right to wear whatever you want BUT show a little RESPECT for others when you're in the public eye. Because I don't like walking around with my lil cousin and half of these girls/guys are having half of there ass hang out, And yes I said guys. I think that we COULD change the meaning of the word "slut" to a more positive meaning but will it happen? Probably not because how fucked up today's society is. But thats just my opinion. #GIRL&BOYLUV no need to bash other genders for what they believe in. 😋 P.S ~ I respect all genders! This isn't just based to a certain person/group. ❤️🦄

Why is it a problem that your little cousin sees ass hanging out? It's just the human body. We all have body parts. Please don't read this with attitude, I am curious as to why people are very protective of children seeing boobs/ass/waists/legs - changes for every culture but you get the gist.

Dearest Lilly :) We need to be realistic here. Most legal systems around the world have indecency laws. There is a reason young children shouldn't see pornography. Do you see what I'm trying to get at? Women are physically different from men, and their perception in society of their body parts is different to men. It's just how it is - it's within the human psyche, since time immemorial. Parents reserve the right to not have to have their daughters (and sons) exposed to a way of dressing or exposure of bodies that runs contrary to their ethos and religious views/philosophy. Some families may have no problem, but we have to be respectful that some do and many do. You ask why? Well, why not? Freedom of choice and values :) Being proud of your body does NOT mean you have to expose it, just in the same way if someone CHOOSES to show their body, it doesn't necessarily mean they're a slut in the negative sense of the word. Also, are you trying to insinuate that girls need to dress 'provocatively' in order to attract someone so they can have sex and keep the race going? Like... what?! You're from an Indian background, as am I and you know that Indian society (with it's many faults) is big on dressing modestly and conducting yourself modestly. Indian society is conservative and people have been getting arranged marriages for hundreds of years, and producing families. So, that notion I find is false. You're the only KZbinr who is critical like this, and I love it. For the record, I personally believe modesty and being respectful is how a person conducts themselves rather than how they dress. Much Love.

You may very well be right! (regarding social constructs). And I'm open to the idea that I may be wrong :) For the time being however, that's how I feel. But I like that we're discussing this. Would be good to get some female feedback on my thoughts and feedback from parents too! What do they think?
@maddiesokoloski7586

Ok, so I kind of agree with you. If you are telling me to cover up because it is against some other people's beliefs, that's not cool. But if people choose to dress a certain way based on them, that's completely acceptable. Also, I don't think she's telling people to show more skin, I think she's just trying to shut down people who shame others for doing so. Also, about how the female body is seen differently than a man's body, that's very true. That does not mean, however, that I should have to dress a certain way because I'm going to be viewed as a slut. Do you see what I mean? How I choose to dress should not be limited based on what other people think. To assume so is moving women back years on a timeline where they fought so hard for the rights to be who they want to be. It's like saying "remember when women weren't allowed to show their ankles, lets still that but with less strictness and more backlash." Also, I don't think that she believes that people have to dress a certain way in order to attract people and I don't know where you got that notion from. --Thanks!

I kind of disagree with you on some points. First of all I am also Indian so I get where you're coming from. First of pornography is not being nude. Pornography is someone having sex. If someone is publicly having sex that is something that children should not watch. We were all born naked, we are uncomfortable because we as a society decided to cover the genitals of both men and women and also a woman's breast. If we as a society hadn't created clothes nudity and sluttiness wouldn't be a problem. A movie example is if you've seen PK where he says everyone on his planet is naked. When Anushka asks him isn't that weird he replies with the bird outside is naked, if he wears a tie that is when he'd look weird so that is my simple explanation of that. Second being proud of your body can be anything. Some people like to show off how good they look (say if they've lost weight and are so proud of their accomplishment they're happy to hide their rolls) or its with treating your body "like a temple" i.e. taking good care of it getting massages, makeup for some people etc. We as a society especially older civilisations like Indians feel the need to stick with how things were back in the day. In the olden days women would do a ghoongat (covering their face and every other body part) this was because they lived in joint families and incest was a very easy thing to come. In pretty much every culture incest is one of the biggest sins (now we know because of birth defects). So their solution was to cover the women (instead of teaching the men to NOT stare at the woman or try to avoid making contact to the point that you develop a relationship like that. You used the word modesty so much in your comment. I like your comment that modesty is being respectful on how you conduct yourself rather than how they dress. But what do you deem respectful? We (indians) consider the respectable thing to do is by wearing decent clothes (so people don't stare), not drinking (so people don't judge us), not smoke (again log kya kahenge (What will people say)), not date (again so people don't judge us), what career you want (what will people say? Sharmaji's son is doing Engineering why do you want to become a painter?) and so on. Modesty is within us. Where we are honest individuals who work hard and try to do the right thing whenever we have a choice. It is NOT how society should judge us. What Lilly was saying was in regards to society. Why should we live the way society finds acceptable, why not how we feel. Lilly dresses like a tomboy. Her choice. She wore a sexy dress to the premiere of her movie. Again her choice. I personally am uncomfortable showing cleavage or wearing a short dress but that does not give me the right to say that everyone else should choose their clothing like I do. Do you get my point? Another point to add to the 'Indian' part of the statement. search Brown paperbag (exactly like that) on Facebook and see the comic about the aunties judging the girl. This is the reality of our society. (I just went on didn't I? Hope you had fun reading lol if you actually finished :) ) At the end of the day I'm not arguing but I just wanted to have a discussion. Happy days my friend #onelove

It is not porn for a woman to show some skin. Why should you be able to tell me what to wear? That is so messed up, and I don't need to do what you say. So why do breasts need to be over sexualized? I mean guys can take off their shirt but girls can't? Why have boobs become sexual? The only thing that should be sexual is reproductive organs. I should be able to do whatever i want with my body, but just because I'm female means i don't have equal clothes rights? How in hell is that fair! Think of this topic as if we are out of what you know. My argument makes total sense. I mean guys can show their nipples but girls can't. Tell me how that is fair. and don't say, "because that is how society is" because that is crude. I mean, in AREAS where females are able to walk around shirtless, can get ARRESTED for turning a guy on. Seriously. So, young children should be exposed to female body acceptance to help change society.

paused video at 4:55 to say this: wether u call someone a slut or not, certain ways of dressing and certain clothes or lack thereof, are going to cause consequences. ..usually negative. and when i get children im going to teach them to dress confidently but not in a way thats going to attract negative attention. you can change the word slut but the meaning behind it will never change. however, we do need to realize that some girls dont get taught properly in life and they might not realise how they are dressing. but most girls do. society calls niki minaj a hero for women yet the consequences of dressing or acting like her in real life doesn't really work positivly. and dont say oh well guys should stop being dirty. most of them arent even but their brains are wired differently to our and thats just basic science. so if u want to dress a certain way yeah ur entitled but your also not entirely wise. being womanly or a little flirty is a lot different to being a slut and neither should be confused with the empowerment of women.
@BekzFreeWill
@BekzFreeWill 8 жыл бұрын
ps. ppl who come up with these arguments are literally looking for an excuse to not feel guilty for what they are doing. they want to feel good about dressing bad or exposed. there are better ways to show yourself off and all your doing is playing into the hands of history repeating itself ....this time its the women degrading the woman.

Katherine Mortifine i agree. But we are living in this day and age and im pretty sure letting our children both male and female act or dress certain ways have not been helping but more so hindering the plight of society. Theres not much hope that the world will get better and even though rapists or pedos will strike no matter what , I kinda dont want to feed them by enticing them woth my kids or teenagers just because I am arguing about a little bit more clothes and covering up a little better. Or deciding the tightness of the clothes etc. I agree with what your saying. But I think that ship has very nearly much sailed.

Slut=a PERSON with multiple sexual partners. I dress and show my stomach and legs all the time that does NOT make me a slut. It's not at all a bad thing at all. Guys walk around with their shirts off all the damn time, no one calls them sluts in fact they are called sexy?! So why is it only targeted towards girls. Dressing a certain way does not mean I sleep with multiple people. Honestly I feel like the word should be used at all.

The thing about it, unless a man is an exclusive relationship with one of the women, he is not typically even stigmatized for having multiple sexual partners. He certainly won't be called a slut, or any masculine parallel word (because there actually isn't one). He be seen in a positive light by other men, a player or a stud.

And even in that definition, no one should be called names. If a woman wants to sleep with multiple people... who is that affecting? Why is she a "slut". What are men who sleep with multiple women called? I call them human beings who are living their life how they want.

I think we should change the meaning of the word slut. We have the power to do that because we are basically the media. The word slut is USUALLY, NOT ALWAYS, BUT USUALLY associated with us females. I don't understand why males cannot be called sluts as well because I have seen pictures on instagram of men showing off their abs and a some of their V Line. or maybe they are wearing boxes. They are not usually named slut, in fact people find that sexy. so if women want a woman wants to show off her body, so be it!! Don't judge a woman because of what she does. Like Lilly said, because she doesn't dress the way you dress doesn't mean you can have the right judge her!

Here is a bit of my part of the conversation: changing the meaning of the word will not solve the problem, they'll come up with a new word and as as long as they want to shame, they will shame a girl for wearing whatever. now I want to emphasize on the solution: we need to teach girls to love themselves , and that SHAME, is what you let yourself feel. if you feel ashamed from wearing a clothes cuz you can't stand what people are saying, then IT'S YOUR WEAKNESS & IT's YOUR PROBLEM, yes being kind is important but again if you don't respect your self and your clothes then you shouldn't be out wearing them anyways, whatever you wear, you should be okay with it because nomatter what you wear people can critsize you and you cant stop it. you cannot please everyone,you dont need to please people with what you're wearing and having that butthurt mentality is THE REAL PROBLEM.
@harethnasser9835

I agree, the real problem is in the mentality of wanting everyone to accept you, it'll never happen, you'll always find people against you, and they're not the majority even tough they seem so, it's just the nasty obnoxious loud ones, just ignore them and be proud of your self like amber rose or whatever she's called.

As a Muslim I would think that girls parents don't want them to see the mini skirts or cleavage because in our religion everyone isn't allowed to show most of their bodies (although a lot of people don't obey this including me) but I'm guessing parents don't want them to be like them or get sexuallised which I find hypocritical but if I wasn't a Muslim I would think it's just that a lot of people have been brought up to think that it is wrong to show yourself. I'm Muslim too and this is what I was thinking as well. Muslim girls are brought up to wear modest clothing and cover up as much as we can. I've been brought up to think that showing skin is bad and against Islamic laws (with the whole modest clothing and such). It's gotten embedded into my brain so much that if I see some girl dress provocatively or photos of them dressing like that, I think it's bad. :s But I think Lilly's vlog today has made me think a little about this topic. 😮

I've been thinking about this for a while now and here's my conclusion that I think applies to everyone: Everyone will have their own beliefs and opinions on how someone should dress and act. I do, and they are based on my religion, how I've been raised, and my own personal conclusions. But everyone, EVERYONE, needs to be respectful and helpful. Who are you helping by calling that girl on Instagram a slut? No one. You're not giving constructive criticism. You're not trying to help her live a better life (if you think she should be). You're just being rude! No one should be called a slut. No one should judge someone they don't even know. If you know someone personally and you think they are making a bad choice, you would give them some constructive criticism to try and help them. You wouldn't just say "girl you're a slut." Calling someone a slut is helping no one and getting no where. I hope everyone has a great day and God bless❤️

at one of our class discussions during literature, this idea stuck with me: no matter how much we want to change how things work, it can only be done if we change the base (a.k.a. the system, the root of everything). and i guess it would take so much time to change something that society's have already been accustomed with just because it's considered the "norms". right now, yeah, there is progress. women have a voice now, and so do the LGBTQ+ community but we've still got a long way to go.

Dear Lilly, I think it is possible to change the meaning of 'slut'. Take for example, the word 'bloody' it used to be one of the worst curse words in the olden days ( well that's what my parents told me ) and now it is safe to use it in a normal setting. So if we can just use hashtags and get the word around to the point where Oxford dictionary changes the definition in their dictionary, the future generation will use this word and hopefully other words like whore in a different way. It is very difficult to discard of a word so widely used. Rather let's change the meaning of this word. Amber Rose started it. Let's continue.

when I was in highschool, there was a really atractive girl and all the other girls hated her, she only had male friends. she was very social and nice ( she was never mean with the girls who were mean to her). I hated her too, and a gym class when we were running we would go near her and howl ( as she was a bitch). months latter I had a fight with my best friend and all my group of friends stoped talking to me. surprisingly, the atractive girl approach me and we started talking and became friends, then I found out that she was a very nice and humble person, that she was in fact a virgin and had only had one boyfriend. this make me think, and now I never judge anyone by their looks, I don't use my jelosy to create an irrational hate for someone I don't even know. (sorry for my english, it is not my first language)

now iv 2016 we are showing more and more of our bodies, I understand if its a "trend" but you still need to respect your body and also to others. Like if you go to a movie and your wearing a sports bra and super short shorts then your showing everything to the world. Now people miss use the word slut were its kind of stupid people are just jealous of others and they out all lot of negativity into it which also leads to bulling, depression and suicide.MORAL OF IT ALL just be proud of who you are and have inner beauty.P.S sorry if this was wrong

Respecting one's body means different things to different people - wearing short shorts and a sports bra to the movies is something I would do if it made sense in the weather conditions - that's respect for my body. I'm taking care of it. Covering it to a certain extent just because society can't handle seeing naked skin is not respecting one's body. Listening to it and doing what feels right is.

Also, I hate this sexualisation of women in the West - women are told to dress in a certain way, viewed as objects, sexual objects. And it's disgusting. Everyone should be judged on their heart and mind and character and not their physical body.

So true- everyone is always saying how girls need to be confident and proud of their body. They say your perfect no matter what you where or your body shape. However, as soon as one of these girls shows some body and finally grows some confidence, they get called a 'slut' or a 'whore'. How does this happen?! A slut should be known as someone who puts other people down by comparing their 'perfect' body to others. Or ,even better, sluts shouldn't exist. We need to spread #girllove and stop putting other people down. Boost their confidence and compliment them. Lily you're a legend for spreading this. You're so kind and passionate. It's time we all stood up to this and excepted ourselves and others choice. Love you so much xxxx

Lilly I love you. "Friends - not everything is a fight. Sometimes I just want to have critical conversations". YESSSSS I think society has us think about what is wrong or right, and "sluts" is one of those things! We're told one thing is wrong and believe it's the only way to think. It requires a lot of will power to go against this, but it's definitely worth it. I hope we can make this world a better place promoting open-mindedness instead of believing what we believe is true. Subjectivity is all around, we just forget about it. Thank you Lilly for, once again, bringing up topics and questions that matter. The other day you asked why we watched your vlogs even though some days you're just sitting in front of your computer... This video is an example to why. Same with the previous vlog, with your rant on #Heterosexualprideday, #AllLivesMatter and #LikeaBoy. People like me watch your vlogs in order not to miss these moments when we feel like we could have a conversation with you. Honestly I'd just love to talk about these things one day with you, in real life. One can dream and work at their dreams, right? :D Sending a big and meaningful hug all the way from Europe. Keep spreading these questions and that positivity :-) We love it and NEED MORE OF IT IN THIS WORLD! Ely P.s. the label "slut" is often used to describe a woman who dresses provocatively and sleeps with a bunch of guys. In my view, the term is just a characteristic that describes a person who is frankly a slut. you mentioned gays and in other ways, the term "gay" is a characteristic of a person who is gay. so if someone is a slut through the way they dress or act, why do you believe that it is wrong for others to call that person a slut if it is what they is? is it wrong to call someone gay if that is what they is? you can't force people to not say something or change the definition of something just because it seems shameful. just change your perception of the term slut into a positive thing like "oh, i'm a slut but i dont give an f" like how gay people as you mentioned dont view the term gay as a bad thing.. thanks if you had the time to read through this it's pretty long oh god...

I take a lot of pride in saying that I have seen EVERY SINGLE vlog, as I'm sure many unicorns have. However, I have to say that this is my favorite. I always love hearing you talk passionately about things because I think you have such a good head on your shoulders and you're such a positive and loving person, but you always want to get people talking and get people thinking about things. Also, seeing the ways that you completely turn your day around make me think about what the eff I'm doing with MY life. OF COURSE you were upset that you couldn't go to the engagement party, I don't blame you, but even though you were upset, you got a ton of work done and turned it into something good. I (and all the other unicorns) hate seeing you sad but knowing that you can turn yourself around is so inspirational and wonderful. I personally think we need to change the definition. It would be nice if we could all stop useing the word but I don't believe that's going to ever happen. The fact woman get called sluts for what they wear, etc is fucked up. I find that women are placed in these boxes full of expectations by society that are not only controlled by male influnishin if it but by women who use these expectations on each other. I hear more woman call other woman sluts and whores then I do men but when I hear guys use it, they use it in a whole different meaning. I don't know if I'm makeing sense or not but I think if we're talking about just the word slut and how it's used then the definition needs to change one way or another....

I feel that if people started looking at women that wear less clothing intention as feeling comfortable about themselves and the way they look instead of interpreting it as wanting to show of, the major part of the problem would be solved... another thing I don't really understand is why is it okay for a guy to take his shirt of and feel proud of their body and women and men don't see any problem with it, but when a girl does it guys don't really mind but when it comes to most girls they're bothered about it. I feel that women can be either really good supporters of each other or be really mean and often bitchy to other girls.

How about everyone stop being so oversensitive over words? That'd destroy it's power quicker than just demolishing it. It IS a bad thing to be a slut, it spreads STDs like wildfire and can cause internal damage from literally too much sex. Raw skin and dry friction are not kind things. Whether you're a dude or a chick, either be a slut and own it or be monogamous and own it. And yeah, women do throw around "slut" more often than men do.At least in my experience.
@katvondfan

your talking about sex though, we're talking about how the word slut is used to degrade women and how its used just when women wear "too much make up" or wearing clothing that is reveling. that is what we are talking about, we aren't focusing on sex. and yes woman do use slut alot but so do men, its hard to determine who uses it more, both use it just as much as the other

I agree with you Lilly when you say that girls should be able to wear whatever they want, but, with all due respect, I would like to add on by saying that, mothers don't want their daughters to wear certain clothing because of some men and sometimes, even women. These men/women catfish/bully/rape/assault girls wearing certain clothes. I feel like this is the reason mothers don't want their daughters wearing certain clothes. For example, In India, where I live, men tend to stare/catfish/rape/assault women who wear short clothes. This is just my opinion and I am not trying to hate on Lilly. I agree with Lilly and I am just putting my opinion out there.

There is a lot of anxiety surrounding sex in general, I think. The ways in which we socialize people into categories of gender imply so much about the anxieties surrounding sexual intercourse, too. Our schools that lack proper sex education and the silence surrounding how we talk about sex/sexuality also say a lot about how we define and assign the word "slut." When people use the term in a derogatory way toward women, it is a verbal tool to degrade the woman who has agency regarding her sexuality/her appearance. To put it plainly, people are shaming a woman for having agency with her sexuality. But, it's not just that. Not only is the word "slut" saying "because she dresses/behaves a certain way she is morally corrupt and bad," but it is also saying, "look at her, at least I am not her, I am better than her." This part is socialized, too. When a man calls a woman a slut, it often means, "this woman acts on her sexual agency, and I don't like that because she should only be a slut for one man." All of this, of course, is also under the assumption that this word is used under heterosexual/heteronormative situations. When we call a woman a slut, we deny and reject her agency regarding sex, and in the process we deem her unworthy of human respect. Our societal tendency to keep sex silent and distill sex from the everyday create these situations. In reality, the most innocent child is born out of sex. Sex permeates everything, and we choose to actively ignore it for the convenience of keeping everything "clean." All sorts of broad structural hierarchies are connected just from this one word, and it comes out of such degradation that I wouldn't opt for reclaiming the word. I hope this comment helps somehow.

I think the reason why some people think "oh I don't want my daughter to dress like her" is because some parents are scared. 1) some parents are scared that their children will outshine them in terms or beauty and self loving their own body, because some mothers are scared of their daughters beauty (kinda hear about things like that & honestly think it's stupid to be jealous of your own daughter but hey-ho) and 2) some are scared that if their daughter is dressed in is what seems to be a "provocative" manner, that they are most likely to be sexually assaulted since that's the type of messed up world we live in & what makes me angry is that its not even their fault when something as terrible as that happens! I agree with you Lilly, women should be able to express their body in confidence however they want & they shouldn't be called a "slut" for their own self expression, they shouldn't be judged for wanting to dress however they want. This is just my opinion and people ar entitles to think and feel however they want

Angie. Personally, I don't think women should get offended with such words (if its true). For instance, if a female does sleep with a lot of guys, then i think it's fine to call her a slut. not to sound rude, but your grammar isn't all that great, which is fine, but it makes it a little difficult for me to respond to everything perfectly. Apologies. Okay, the thing is public nudity is illegal. Public wearing mini skirts and having boobs is perfectly fine. I don't know who decided this in the first place but the view is archaic. It's demeaning to women and puts us back centuries of a fight for gender equity when we tell girls to be modest in public, especially for the sake of men. A woman can be who she wants and dress how she wants and should not face adversity.

Ok, I just have one response to this which is that when we were raised we were programed a certain mentality of how to be an idea "women/girl". But when we get introduced to something out of the norm, then we begin to judge. Which I not right!!! We should remember,that everyone has the right to be happy regardless of what it is.....

girl power!!! I'm over 40 and I have a daughter...i was lucky to be raised by a woman that truly taught me to dress how I felt good...and didn't demonize the word "slut" ...my woman friends and I use the term as a joke about OURSELVES...so yes the meaning loses its power...i applaud you for bringing up this issue because so many young girls watch you and it's important to bring up the fact that this is mostly girl on girl hate.... I strive to teach my daughter to be herself. period...and to understand that other people deserve to be themselves...period!! ❤❤

I think the first step to ending slut shaming is teaching everyone, girls and boys that shut shaming isn't right and that girls should be able to wear whatever they want. parents don't want their younger daughters wearing revealing clothes because there are so many people who judge, say negative things and are basically creeps and parents don't want their daughters being exposed to that at a young age. if everyone learns to stop using the words "sl*ts or wh**es then maybe more girls would feel comfortable wearing more revealing clothes

Lilly you're amazing for bringing this subject up. In my environment 'slut' is mostly used by jealous girls who see a really pretty girl who is confident in her own body and has a lot of attention from boys. From women that word comes with great jealously because they feel insecure about themselves. From men perspective - there is still double standard about sleeping with different people. Guys think that's their right to brag about sleeping with multiple people because it makes them 'cool' but if a girl is winning that contest they think their manhood is in question and they start shaming her for being her confident self. That girl has done nothing wrong in her own eyes - she chose to be this way - confident and sexy but people around her with insecurities about themselves they want to bring her down to make feel better about themselves. Trust me I know. My sister is better looking, gets more attention from boys than I ever had and for a long time I felt bad and tried to bring her down. But it was my problem not hers so I realised that and it doesn't bother me anymore. My advise to all 'slut' shamers - man/ woman up, it's not her fault that you feel insecure. Fix your attitude and her confident self won't make you any less sexy or desirable. So be yourself and don't judge other people for being themselves

The consept of 'sluts' and 'slut-shaming' is so complicated because there are many things that need fixing. For example clothes. I think for some people mini skirt and small top with a cleavage means that I'm horny and want to have sex when in honesty, it's just hot day and I want to dress cute. Like I can't remember right now any clothes men wear that have that kind of connotation like "look at me ladies". Everyone should be proud of their bodies and feel free to dress however they want to and not be afraid of getting called slut or catcalled by creepy old men. But tbh if I see any underwear from boys or girls I get kinda disgusted idk. But in that situation I'm turning my head the other way not attacking the people wearing too loose or see-trough pants.

I 100% agree. I think why some people think it's a bad example is because kids will obviously do the same thing and then attract people who only care about their body. But I for sure see and agree with your point and think we should change the definition. More power to you!

If one is dressing for themselves it should be okay! It's so annoying when people tell us to love our bodies and embrace it, but when girls dress in clothes that show their bodies it's "not okay." I'm actually okay if people choose to disagree with a way a person dresses, but if a girl wears a v neck and is considered a slut then a guy who wears a v neck should also be called a slut. I also hate it when people ask me "who are you dressing up for?" When I'm dressed up. Like, can't I dress up for myself? I think people should try to change the meaning of slut.

The thing about the word “slut” is that from what I know was as a growing women is that when (some not all) men think that if a woman dress in a certain way they think they have the right to citizens here or even take advantage of her because “she is asking for it “. Also if a woman doesn’t want it show her body she is also criticized for being a bad example to kids and that she is telling kids that they shouldn’t show and embrace\love their bodies. Another source of the problem is other women because if you don’t want someone to use that word on you then doesn’t use it on other people. When we call each other sluts that just gives guys that permission to call us sluts. My mother has taught me that I should love my body but also there is a time for everything. For example that if I am at a fancy wedding I shouldn’t come in a bikini, and if I am at the beach I shouldn’t come in a ball gown. All I am saying are you do you as long as you don’t hurt someone and respect if they don’t want to see it because it will take time for people to understand our way of thinking. The thing that I love about the Greeks is that they didn’t only not care if people embraced their bodies but thought that is was a beautiful thing and didn’t try to hide it because it is nature and they thought it was worthy to be put in art and not hidden. In my opinion I fell that instead of try to demolish the word we should change its meaning. (Sorry if my spelling/grammar is bad but English isn’t my first language)

I totally agree, I am someone who feels very passionate about 'slut-shaming' and treating everyone with respect no matter what. It really pissing me off when people say these sorts of things because why aren't women allowed to feel comfortable being who they wanna be and wearing what they wanna wear. I mean some guys wear shirts and some wear those vest tops, and no one calls them "sluts" or anything because they are showing more skin than what other men like to wear but as soon as girls decide to wear a crop top instead of a normal t-shirt, that's not ok. That just doesn't make any sense to me what so ever!!

I, as a female, understand that being proud of our bodies is so important, which it is, BUT on the other hand isn't it nice to keep kids from growing up too quickly? Childhood is getting shorter and shorter for boys and particularly for girls. We can keep kids as kids without shaming them! Just some items of clothing are inappropriate for little kids, imo. Like, slang words for things little kids shouldn't know about yet shouldn't be all over t-shirts or whatever. Just a thought!

@iisuperwomanii I feel that open-mindedness comes with the years. The shock a person feels towards a vulgar word, or a woman showing cleavage has decreased in today's times. Sure, there are so many people who still feel like they HAVE to comment on another person's choices. And then they go on and call themselves 'modernistic' and stuff like that. Such people should just keep quiet about their judgments and get on with life. Also, as Lilly said in the video as to whether we should ban vulgar words or change their meaning, i feel that changing it would really help. For example if we change the alleged meaning of slut to, say, a person who is sexy and confidant, the person who is the recipient of such words will feel better and more confident about herself rather than not be herself and suffer anxiety. Change has always been good and it will continue to be.

Personally, I hate the word "slut" and honestly don't think we should be referring to others as such. I certainly don't think we can change the meaning of a word that's been so used with a negative connotation, however I do think we should stop using that word even if the person we're referring to is sleeping around or dressing too provocatively. I definitely think that a woman should wear what makes her happy but at the same time I believe a woman should dress in a way that is respectable. In order to be respected and taken seriously in today's society, a lady must dress and act in a way that is classy and elegant in my opinion. Everything in moderation. Nevertheless, ladies should empower one another not degrade.

I think that it's probably near impossible to erase the word slut from our society, and it may be just as hard try and change the connotation that we associate with the word. But between the two I think we have a better chance if changing what the word means. And as for the second question I think that it just goes back to the way woman were viewed hundreds of years ago, woman were expected to act in a certain way, to be meek and modest and even to dress in a certain way, that embody what a woman is suppose to be like. and so when woman were things that go against those traditional values they're called sluts.

one of the most inspirational videos I've watched in a very very long time. The other day my mum said that she didn't like Kim Kardashian for posing with little clothing on, because it was a bad influence to me making me think that was the right way to dress. I questioned her, why is that not the right way to dress? Why is there a certain way you have to dress? Shouldn't we be teaching girls to love theirs bodies and be proud of them not hide them because it's 'not right'. Just because you don't like what she is wearing doesn't mean its not right. Also I think we should change the definition of slut, and make it a compliment. If people use it as a negative girls should be trained to see the positive in the word.
@niamhlacey235

My personal belief is that language is one of the greatest virtues. Being able to share our thoughts and opinions through words with others probably contributes most the progression of society. However the when words are used improperly or used to describe something so subjective that almost everyone that reads it will interpret what was said differently it most likely doesn't need to be said; and what was said often shows more about the speaker's character than they intended it to. I think that the word "slut" being used to shame women into thinking that showing ("to much of") their body automatically must mean that they are trying to attract attention or show off is not the only way that is could be used. The word most likely will not stop being used however the definition or words are constantly being slightly altered to mean different things. Who knows one day "slut" could be used to describe a persons outward confidence about the way they choose to dress and show their body.

I totally agree with all of this and everything that Lilly is saying it is so true. It doesn't make sense to me how guys can go and take off their shirts but the second a girl wants to show just a little bit of skin (which she has the right to.) she is called a slut or a whore. Like no that is not how society should work. Because if you look at it society is contradicting it self, because in a lot of places you find commercials and media being like girls need to love themselves and then you have slut shaming. And it is like how can girls love themselves when they have the fear of being called a slut for showing skin. So I think that we should change the definition of the word slut so that it means something positive. Because there are so many people now who say the word slut and it is going to be hard to get them to stop saying it. So even if slut shaming doesn't stop embrace the term slut and if someone calls you a slut take it as a compliment!

I think that people throw the word slut around all the time. If a girl tries to express her body by wearing yoga pants, they call her a slut. She's just trying to express herself! Don't be hating on her because she is comfortable in her own body! All of these moms say that they don't want their daughters to see girls dressed in mini skirts so they aren't letting their daughters see that it's ok to be comfortable in your own skin. Everyone is different and we need to respect that. Thanks you lily for taking about this. I hate to say it but the truth is, woman are the oppressed sex. If a guy walked around with something that brings attention to them, nobody cares! If a girl wears short shorts, then we get shamed for it. This world is messed up. I am glad that lily and amber are not afraid to say something about it. Let's change the definition of slut and use the word correctly! Ps, LOVE YOU SUPERWOMAN ❤️❤️🦄🦄

This video really made me think. Because I dress very reserved so I can't really understand why people would want to show their bodies. But at the same time I have had many really close friends who didn't care about their imperfections or what other people thought and wore whatever they wanted to. I think that is a really brave thing to do, and most of those people were really nice and sweet and you know people. So thank you Superwoman for making me think about this.

I think as humans, we're so tuned to categorising things into good and bad. So, when someone sees the consequences of a lady confidently showing off their body, it makes them feel like they have the right to judge and generalise that the kind of attitude will definitely lead to a negative outcome. Perhaps, it's all about perspectives and how someone had been raised all their lives. It plays a huge role in how they perceive certain issues. If the person were to come from a conservative family, perhaps, the thought process is that, "I don't show off my body for the world to see, but I still feel empowered within." Empowerment is different for every woman. However, being judgemental towards how other women who portray their confidence publicly is most likely a sign that the individual feels a tinge of insecurity or jealousy within. This is where #GirlLove can be a strong advocate for such issues. ❤️

I used to think same as you do. One day I got into a conversation about this with my doc who is btw very conservative. And he asked me who is to decide how much material of clothing on a body is appropriate? How would you feel a person walks into your house naked while your kids and standing and staring at them. I do not support slut shaming. If a guy does the same, he loses respect in my eyes too

I think the problem lies with people being rude or insensitive when something happens that is different from what they do. Not only for this reason in particular. On this topic: I personally do not agree with that way of dressing (for both genders) but I will not be rude because it is okay to disagree but still be cool with each other. I think people have the right to think differently but being rude is not okay. On what you said in the vid about kids: I would advice my child not to dress in that way even if I would have no reason for it solidly to keep them safer. I don't think it's worth it to prove a point over the safety of your child. The reason why I disagree: I believe in confidence in a modest, humble way if you know what I mean! Hope you all have a great day!

I (almost) completely agree with you Lilly. The only part I don't really is with ''Oh I don't want my younger daughter dressed like that' Why?' and that's because with that I personally believe there is an age limit. I guess it depends on the age but I mean... 13 and under is like okay stick to the cute sweatshirts and a low skirt because the younger you know, the more vulnerable and I think it is important to teach your younger daughters to yes be happy and comfortable with their body, but also self aware. There can always be (sorry if this is too inappropriate for your comment section) Pedophiles or rapists and you don't want your daughter to be in danger of that. But that's just my opinion I agree 100% on everything else although. Keep doing what you do I love your videos and can't wait to see more!
