The fake marriage school project is not as abnormal as the narrator may think. When I was in high school, I took a "Human Growth and Development" class where one of the assignments was to "get married" to a class mate. The project was meant to help students better prepare for real marriage by having them do assignments involving relationship development, conflict resolution, and problem-solving. At least at the time, it was a project that was done by a lot of other public schools. Although, my class never had other students pretend to be kids and I myself refused to take part, because I thought it was weird.
