Fascinating video! The NYC Subway system where I'm from has a similar garbage train operation that runs during certain nights, but this usually involves diesel engines and flatcars in addition to a modified R62A (known as an R127), as the modified subway cars never runs as a solo unit. Shame that more subway systems don't use garbage trains like these, as they're also a good way to move freight on these systems.
@TheNewTriStateGuyАй бұрын
You can also find the R65, which is a modified R62 used for pump and generator service.

We don’t use the diesel fleet for picking up station trash, only as power for the vacuum trains. Also, the trash trains on the B division tend 5:22 to be these days powered by R42 class cars, as the R127s don’t have air conditioning.

It's pronounced Nee-pon SHAR-RII-OH. When pronouncing the "rii" syllable make sure your tongue taps the roof of your mouth at the tooth-gum line at the same time as it is spoken. :) GREAT video by the way! Not often that we see a train car with circular windows outside of japan's luxury line trains.

NGL I really love the design of RT-10, especially the circular windows. It’s a shame that the TTC didn’t order similar designed railcars for passenger use.

Just to fill in a gap at 3:51 : Two Gloucester cars (5100 & 5101) were the ones converted to a Garbage Train. They were shopped on June 10, 1987 and outshopped on November 6, 1987.

They should have kept it either as a motorized box car or a staff car after a thorough refurbishment. Or clean it and send it to the museum.

4:23 There's actually a photo of the units that caught on fire in the TransitToronto article named "The 2000 Subway Fire and Aftermath". Should also mention that the models involved were a converted H1 married pair that partially replaced the Tokyo Rose. They were designated as RT-9 and RT-10 leading to the Tokyo Rose being re-designated into RT-10a due to this. After the fire, RT-10 was salvaged and re-married to another retired H1 car that became the 2nd RT-9. As mentioned, TTC stopped garbage train collecting considering garbage in general is a fire hazard, and that first and only incident with the garbage trains was pretty notable. Considering the Tokyo Rose was only meant for garbage collecting, it's likely the reason they sent it off for scrap rather than keeping it around. The H1 cars were both for asbestos abatement and garbage collecting leading them to just become asbestos abatement cars before they got replaced by retired H4 cars in the mid-late 2010s. It kind of sucks they didn't keep the Tokyo Rose, not just for it being a unique model in the system, but also since it was outsourced from Japan. But the TTC has something against preserving subway history for some odd reason, even though we were the first city in Canada to get a subway line. It also didn't help this oddball was something the general public barley knew about, lacking any significance beyond the TTC itself and railfans. Albeit not for passenger service, it's interesting to know that the Tokyo Rose had wider side doors 3 decades before the T1s rolled out into service in 1996, lol. Overall nice video.

I found this quite an informative video! Now, I know how "Tokyo Rose" came to be, what happened to it, what the other garbage cars in Toronto were, and even how uncanny its appearances were. Also, I found it quite strange that it has the same name as a World War II propaganda group, and now, I see I'm not the only one. Thanks for the video!

Because the Tokyo Rose "train" is so short, it is subject to being stranded powerless in gaps in the third rail in track switches. In this case, it carries a long jumper cable that can be unwound to clamp unto a powered rail if needed to get itself unstuck.
@metropodАй бұрын
They train all newly hired NYCTA operating employees on doing that… when it was my turn the darn thing started to melt, sticking to the third rail. Had to give it one solid yank to pull it off.

I remember that car. I also remember when the cars were red with institution green interior, with red vinyl seats and round lights inside that would flash on and off. You could open the windows on the cars as they sped through the tunnels then too. Oh, and it cost only a dime to ride.

Uncanny is an interesting word to use. It just looked odd with its big round incandescent lights that were lower on the Kelvin temp scale and horn that sounded like a low whistle rather than a trumpet while the inside had stark white lighting shining through those circular windows. St. Joseph's hospital's patient elevator also had that same round window and stark white OR theatre lighting too.
