All basses i ever tried was cheap or mid range, except one, Rickanbaker 4001 from 1978! That was first time i felt what is hi price iinstrument, is not about tone! You can see how much effort they`ve put in it and it is really comfortable. I would like to try dingwalls and warwick, but they are way out of my league (for now(i hope so)).

I believe someone has beaten me to this comment but just to reiterate is just too expensive , period... The higher end or better bass guitsrs have always cost way too much & its always been this way & thats when he had an ongoing unumerable amount of solo acts & band within the Music Industry & since there's basically next to no Music Industry that you at one time would easily see thousands of artist signed on any given day of the week all over the world , week in week out , youd think that with the way there is such a lack of even Cover Bands youd think theyd drop their prices but as someone who took up bass in my late 20s i always looked at bass guitar & lead/rhythm guitar prices in our local store when i was in for new strings for my acoustic guitar or grab some extra drum sticks incase the extra ones i had snapped & everytime i looked at bass guitar price & the price of bass strings they always cost a fortune... It has just always been this way & i could buy a full pack of 6 string acoustic or lead guitar strings for 1 Single Bass String & the logic ive always used is because they are thicker & therefore more wire has too be used & ive always put the prices of bass guitar down to their high prices because of the certain woods they had to use... Even 40 years later it hasnt changed & with a lot of large famous Brand Named Bass Guitar Builders having the same model of a bass guitar but made in Mexico/Indonesia/Japan isnt as much cheaper than what the America versions are were as the German Warwick Bass Guitars can see you get a reasonably priced version of the expensive German equivalent & if yiur happy with that then cool for it but for bassists who are in it for the love of it whether theirs a Music Industry or not will see them have a few cheaper made , in lets say Indonesia , bass guitars but theres nothing tk compare to owning tge truly great one's but they will cost you a small fortune... Even the models of a well known American like of bass guitars that isn't Fender but is Lakland then the American version will cost quite a lot of money but since the same model is built in Indonesia , as its cheap labour , but shipped back to America to have the electronics put in & the Indonesian Version of the American one is finished at assembly & given the Ok to be ready to ship to.a Store anywhere in the world will still see you spending a quite a bit of money on the Indonesian version & apart from Sterling Ball , Ernie Balls son , who has 3 level tier prices from Low to Mid & finally his High Priced bass guitars... This has helped those tl get the MusicMan Stingray sound but theres 3 price levels & there have not been that many who can deliver a good quality quality products like his range of bass guitars but the only down since is his a low/mid/high priced version of the MusicMan Stingray & even in the last 4 plus years he has changed his version of those bass guitars but were as a Sterling Ray Sub was the cheapest i see a variation of a Sterling Sub thats expensive but then again MusicMan Stingray Prices have always been wacko & when his father Ernie Ball only made the high end versions you could see 2 of the exact same models sitting next to each other & look the exact same but one is another (i'll use £'s) 5 to £600 more!.. Id take in the specifications bu asking if one or the other has used different woods but most times its aestetic looks that can costs you a lot more as certain finishes on bass guitars cost more & personally ive always thought bassists have been getting ripped off no matter what theyve been made with... I understand that certain pickups used on a bass guitar can cost so much more because their makers specialize in making high end pickups & this is down to if your looking for a specific sound & if in a band & you want you bass guitar to sound great througj a PA it does pay to have the best pickups as cheaper pickups througj a PA can cause sounds that are difficult to get rid of & why , if they have a few kicking about , if your recording in a Studio & you know & the Producers knows as soon as he sees what bass guitar yiu have then some Producers have been known to let the bassist use their better bass guitar as the bass guitar being recorded & mixed can be a nightmare is the pickups are causing issues & even high end bass guitars have been known tk do this & hence why a Producer might take longer to finish mixing the bass to sound as good as the rest of the instruments... This is why theres a huge growth market of accessories that any guitaristu can choose to buy & swap out the pickups on an expensive lead or bass guitar as they bought the guitar for everything other than thc pickups as many guitarist love the guitar they have bought but they will swap out , mostly , pickups as specific brand pickups have a better sound & the best way to describe this is buying a car but you dont like shock absovers/alloy wheels & the exhaust as just a few... Decades ago what you bought is what you get unless yiu were a genius electrician but now even if you both the most expensive versiin of any guitar you can still see players swapping out parts to make the guitar fit what they hear in their head as the sound they want... Ibanez have always made a good range of cheap bass guitar/mid & high but even what id class as cheap can see yiu buy a really good bass for the price but in the end it all comes down to what you want... As now you can either leave the guitar as is or give it a hot rod upgrade as most times its the sound that the pickup make that can determine whether someone will buy a specific guitar but since accessories for swapping out parts is so easy now many can make a cheap bass sound like a high end bass guitar by just changing the pickups as rarely these days that someone will buy a lead or bass guitar & play it as is as many will want to give them an upgrade if they so wished to do so... In light of this still ongoing coronavirus & its variants stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... ......

I've only ever played one fanned fret bass, the Chapman bass (can't remember model designation), and I liked it, especially since it was passive. I love the styling of many fanned fret basses, but can't stand active electronics or pickups, so unless I find one that's passive and has the deep lows I like, I'll probably never get one. My current favorite bass is my modded import jazz bass. I've completely replaced all the electronics and pickups, one DiMarzio bass humbucker, wired to a single volume and a spin-a-split pot, which removes one of the coils from the humbucker, making it lower gain when I need it to be. I still need to do some minor wood work on the bass, but I love it so much.

So, in your opinion, how would you compare the neck of the Dingwall to an Ibanez SR (I've been spoiled by the fast thin neck)? And also do you feel that this bass can easily transition for many different styles of playing and genres? From your video, it seems to be able to tonally, but was wondering how does it handle playability wise? Thanks,

on a 4 you can usually get away with normal strings - but id recommend using 'special' ones, the dingwall own brand strings are great - if you wanna down tune a bit then payson makes strings made for dingwalls that are a little bit heavier. ive only played a ng2 4 string a handful of times, but i remember the neck feeling naturally fast - not 'over small' like an ibanez sr or similar - it just felt effortless to play. honestly it comes down to spec imo - if you're looking at a afterburner alder body maple neck and fb in a solid colour (basically a Canadian ng2) just get an ng2 or ng3. they are incredible instruments. obviously that changes if we're talking second hand tho
