The Lincoln statement is... not exactly accurate. Lincoln still passed the 13th Amendment when the political consequences of doing so were actually rather harmful. Much has been made of the fact that Lincoln wasn't initially planning on ending slavery, there are two details this ignores. 1, his position (slavery can't be allowed to expand in any way) was still quite radical, and 2, he still pushed for a complete end to slavery despite the political consequences of doing so.
@seigeengine7 жыл бұрын
Racist black people really love to pretend Lincoln was some evil racist. Kind of disturbing that they're so deranged they need to attack literally any figure they can when there are a plethora of legitimate examples to pick.
@lcrawpuppyable7 жыл бұрын
True, but in the end Lincoln always cared more about preserving the Union. As he said himself, if he could save the union by letting some states keep their slaves, he would. I think it’s fair to point out that the guy wasn’t perfect and was hardly a model for racial equality. Doesn’t mean what he did wasn’t important and appreciated, it just means that like most historical figures, the man wasn’t perfect.
@gregorsamsa92647 жыл бұрын
The issue with that is, he very well could have saved the Union without pushing for the 13th Amendment, possibly with fewer political difficulties.
@gregorsamsa92647 жыл бұрын
Sidenote; I'm fascinated by how conversations about Civil Rights on the internet so rarely mention LBJ.
@lcrawpuppyable7 жыл бұрын
Noah Blank I’m just saying what the man said. Some might argue that he knew letting the south keep their slaves would only lead to further conflict even after the civil war ended. It’s clear he thought slavery was immoral, but even he admitted he cared far more about the union. Maybe his views changed by that point, (it’s certainly possible) but its hard to say when we can’t ask the guy. So it’s all basically speculation. PS LBJ is usually forgotten for a lot of his contributions unfortunately. That may have something to do with his involvement in the Vietnam War, but his progressive outlook on race and poverty was admirable either way.

Well, a lot of people have taken issue with the focus on black problems, and people are entitled to their opinion. However, it does make for interesting discussion. Honestly though, I don't know what people were expecting. You have a black guy reviewing songs made by (for the most part) black people in a genre birthed *predominantly by black peoples' history. That's like if I got upset at a white guy who reviews country music because he liked a lot of songs about hard working small town folk and going fishing. Or a Gospel reviewer who likes to talk about Jesus. I get that Rap music is not just a "black thing" and that rap can be used to show different viewpoints and host a discussion about tons of things, from people of all colors. But if the best verses of the year didn't include lines about the lives and struggles of black people (Something rap was meant for from day one) I'd definitely raise an eyebrow.

no dude I think the problem with it is that this year we have all been bombarded with politics from everywhere even if it was an election year it was excessive so having the channel that you go to to check out from all of that has like 3 or 4 entries about it in a top 10 list is just annoying.

Actually, Abe Lincoln was appalled by slavery and constantly condemned it his whole life. This is in his actual autobiography. However, freeing the slaves (somewhat) was indeed a tactic to solely win the war. I just think that needs to be said.

For I'm not Racist, it actually just occurred to me. I think that the black guy's verse being softer is actually supposed to be the point. The white dude opens by saying "With all due respect," and then proceeds to be as disrespectful as possible, but then the black dude opens with "With all disrespect..." and then just spends his verse just exploring the other guy to please just try to understand, and gives the reasons for why he should hate the white dude, but can't bring himself to commit because he is still a human being. Also, as somebody who actually grew up in a white, pretty racist family, who voted for Trump... let me say that what gets said behind closed doors, when no POCs are around would shock most MS pundits. In my experience, the white dude actually was representing the white people I grew up with rather well.
@seigeengine7 жыл бұрын
Lol, no, the black guy was a racist asshole the entire time. The point was that they're both wrong, but for different reasons, and that each can be resolved by increased communication rather than existing in isolated echo chambers where our only view of each other is when something confirms our prejudices.
@seigeengine7 жыл бұрын
Repeating the narrative I've just explained is wrong is not an argument. The black guy isn't wrong because what he says is wrong. Try understanding how a retort is meant to work first.
@lcrawpuppyable7 жыл бұрын
seigeengine uuuummm... okay? I just mean that if the song writer intended that message then the song does a bad job of executing it. If he was trying to make the black guy look just as wrong as the white dude, he should’ve had the black guy constantly listing stereotypes, throwing around racial slurs and threatening him. But the white guy is (as said before) too racist compared to the black guy who isn’t nearly as bigoted with his words. The way the song is laid out it seems like we’re supposed to side with the black guy since he spends most of his time defending his own race instead of the attacking the other guys.
@lcrawpuppyable7 жыл бұрын
seigeengine and I think your point on communication is valid but they never had an actual calm discussion, they just yell at each other and then hug. If the argument is that they just need to communicate more, the song does a poor job of showing that.
@seigeengine7 жыл бұрын
No, because that would have missed the mark, and wouldn't have worked in the song as it is structured, since the white guy would have had no chance to respond, unlike the black guy. Rather, the white guy goes off about an ignorant perception of black people, framing all that they suffer as self-inflicted, and a product of inadequacies, leading to racism. The black guy responds with the counterpoint of their perception of why those results happen, but expresses that they are external to their character. Both are racist, for the same reason, but in different ways. The white guy is racist because he doesn't understand the struggle of black Americans, and misconstrues that struggle as them being innately bad. The black guy is racist because he doesn't understand the ignorance of white Americans, and misconstrues that ignorance as them being innately maliciously racist. The white guy isn't any more racist than the black guy. The nature of their racism is just different. Each perceives each other as evil in ignorance of why they end up where they are, which sets the audience up for the appeal for greater communication, which can resolve the underlying problem and humanize each to the other. And you clearly didn't pay attention, because after they hug they start talking to each other. It's unrealistic, but it doesn't have to be realistic. It's meant to make a point. Besides, maybe you lose track of the goal of being right when you get angry, but I don't.

Daily Dose Of Derpy “it was suppose to make bad points,” no I’m sorry very few people make things intentionally bad. When someone makes something bad you can hear that in the song, you can’t just tack on “it was supposed to be bad guys” as an afterthought and make your song better. What Eminem did that with his latest album revival, it would still be a shitty album...see my point
@Martin-ph9yi7 жыл бұрын
Ok so joyner thoughts was to have the white guy say all bad points against blacks, and the black guy to correct him but if you really think about it, both sides didnt have flawless arguments. I would stick to my reflection of the song and say that noone's fully in the right or wrong

Rap Critic, you should see Joyner Lucas talking about the song on genius. He is not saying that both sides are right as many people believe. No he is showing the points and arguments that the trumpers make just to knock it down, I still don't think this song is that good.Yet that is because instead of Joyner showing the emotion in the characters he just says fuck alot of times.
@brendanferrell95197 жыл бұрын
Andre Vital Pardue The entire point of the song is to show the most used arguments and points of each side. Joyner wrote it like that to show that neither side is 100% right. He wrote it so that you could see both sides can be racist and ignorant. It's supposed to help open eyes to both sides and their struggles. I think RC missed the point of the song tbh.

RC you do not seem to get what Joyner tried to do with the Song, it was definetly not about one side being better, or which side has more problems. the point was to look aside that and open up a dialogue between both. imagine the Song with the black guy just lecturing him about black culture, it would have completely missed the point. joyner even said that if he wanted to show black Struggle the song would have been 20 minutes long.
@samamies887 жыл бұрын
way to open dialogue: one side listing racist things and other side listing things he is gone tru? how is that a dialogue? dialogues would had been them trying to figure out why the white guy thinks he thinks, the black dude already did it, they both did note that they live in different cultures (which was why they hugged because they understood that they don't know about stuff) Like the comment above noted: Joey Badass did what this song did not. It aimed to reason stuff, it wanted to tell WHY things are how they are. Joyner just explained how one side feels and what other side does.. that is not dialogue.. it is maybe an opening to dialogue but the dialogue itself would need sequel. Badass's song kinda is one since it explains stuff (which brings both sides closer).
@TheBasedGee7 жыл бұрын
Kummo (RRM) I doubt the song was about opening dialogue. I believe it was more about having a representative of each culture express what they see. Even if one side seems wrong because of beliefs in stereotype, it's still speaking the truth that either side believes in. That being said, there are points on both sides that stated things that don't equate to every person of that culture. So don't look at it as a revolutionary song that attempts to tackle a hard topic about black culture, but instead about the perspectives that each side has about the other because of what they see and have to deal with.
@samamies887 жыл бұрын
If he did not try to open a lialogue, if he just wanted to both sides be like "fuck you" (like he says in genius himself when breaking down the song), doesn't that make the song even WORSE!? Like.. if he wanted to open a dialogue, start a conversation, that would be noble goal altho failing by doing it. You take that one good thing about this song off and what does it leave? Nothing progresses.. he is just listing things people are currently feeling that people don't express (again, something he said elsewhere, was it on CNN or on Revolt?). If he did controversial song only because it is controversial isn't that way worse than doing a controversial song that has a point, meaning and a goal to progress something?
@TheBasedGee7 жыл бұрын
Kummo (RRM) I get what you're saying. However, what I'm saying is that he is trying to show both perspectives by stating what each side sees. That is the point. Most people select sides or only believe what they know because it's what they see and are used too. I'm not saying either side is right or wrong, he's just using a song to point out how people view the same thing differently. Inherently, that will cause some dialogue. But if it's purpose was to state all the feelings the black guy went through, then it would be longer and break the point he's trying to make: Both sides don't fully understand each other and that usually leads to hatred because they believe what they hear from like company or news instead of finding out the other's perspective an working on it from there
@TheBasedGee7 жыл бұрын
So basically, just stating what each side feels like you said lol but alot people don't understand each side and place blame on each other instead of trying to find a solution. That was the point of the song

Great list, RC. There was a few on here I hadn't heard that I'll definitely check out (The Remix of that Joyner Lucas song sounds awesome, and this is coming from a white Canadian & that Ice Cube song sounds great for the beat alone). One thing.... no honorable mentions? Also, still would love your thoughts on the song I suggested, Buy Now by Spose..... I get why it didn't make you list with a list as strong as this, but I still feel it's a powerful song about corporations & finances with a fantastic beat. But then again, I think most of Spose's stuff would be up anyone's alleyway & both Good Luck with Your Life along side Humans were pretty decent albums even though he was mostly spitting bars. But the media that doesn't care to emphasize the struggles of the black community is majority and almost entirely on the left or Democratic side of things. Great list, definitely need to check out a lot of the stuff on here, though I will admit I’m a bit bummed that G Yamazawa didn’t make it. His “Flavor In Ya Ear” Freestyle was my favorite thing (not Kendrick related) this year!

Amerikkkan badass was what i wanted from Kendrick, I really hope now that he has replaced Drake as the biggest pop star in rap we will get something more akin to that, but then again by the time that happens the world might have already moved on
@parmesianthecat60777 жыл бұрын
Dude I totally agree that All Amerikkan Badda$$ was the album I wanted from Kendrick this year, and I really hope he doesn't continue in this commercial direction. He is so much more than comercialrap/Drake (not that Drake is bad, I love If You Are Reading This...), but I hope his future is a little more conscious like TPAB as he does conscious rap better then any rapper alive imo

It always gives me a chuckle when people try to pretend Lincoln was some big racist. It's one of those tells that they're irrational. Yes, Lincoln's first priority wasn't freeing black people, but that doesn't imply much of anything.

seigeengine he didn't say Lincoln was racist tho. He just pointed out that Lincoln wasn't the faultless hero that America makes him out to be.

It's ridiculous to think that Kanye should act any differently because some idiots think he represents an entire race of people. It's not Kanye's responsibility to not act like an asshole but the people who think he represents anyone but himself to change their way of looking at things.

Ha wtf, ok voting for Trump makes someone racist by default. Ok, I see you're being very fair and open minded rap critic. Jesus.

Yup, every single one dude. There wasn't even one person who's family might have come into the country after slavery or even that people in their family changed last names or married out of them. Every single United States citizen that is African American or was born in Britain and moved to that country has the same last name of their ancestor's slave masters. There's no way that could be wrong at all. (sorry for being smug but come one rap critic, there's no way you can look past the multitude of things that make that a false statement)

I love how you can see the flaws of generalizing people as SJWs, but don't see the flaws in generalizing people as "neckbeards" as if everyone who disagrees with rap critic is just a racist white loser who lives in their parent's basement, eats doritos, drinks mountain dew, has a body pillow and whines about how he's too nice for any women to love him. Yeah, totally no hypocrisy here.

So black people who are second, third or even first generation immigarnts from africkan countries shouldn't be included in racial discussions in USA since their surnames arn't of people who owned their ancestors ?

It's kind of true. I was raised by my dad and grandmother who were immigrants from Trinidad. Just having a father alone probably helped a lot, but the whole way I was raised compare to other poor blacks were completely different. My friends growing up that were black thought my family was "uppity". Which in turn I found myself making friends with other Carribbean blacks and whites because they were more like me.

My favorite rap song of the year is "Run away" by Ryan Oakes. It's a powerful song apologizing to a girl for not being there for her, for locking himself away, and not being able to truly connect with her. It has some really good lyrics and it hits home with me. Anyway, great video, as always. :)

Rap Critic, I just wanted to let you know as a white guy who lives in a smaller town and has racist family members the depiction of the racist in the video isn't too far off, I have an Uncle who made $2.5 Million as an independent business owner and he shares a very similar thought process as presented in the Joyner Lucas video, I also had classmates in high school who couldn't afford to pay for school lunch who had a very similar thought process as the white guy in the Joyner Lucas video, women and men alike. They aren't fair in their form of thinking, only in private will they show you their racism and I believe Joyner presented the problem accurately as disproportionately in my experience white men tend to hold an unfair hatred of black people and a mistrust of black men. I think he did a great job in unmasking this problem and forcing everyone to open their eyes to it.
@devalphamon72897 жыл бұрын
Gavinsnyder Impimpin and black people dont mistrust white people?
@TFHCFM7 жыл бұрын
metal greymon A I said a mistrust of black men and if we're going to be serious both have a reason to mistrust one another but the problem more is disproportionate hatred.
@MDoorpsy7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! This has been my experience as well.
@alexanon83457 жыл бұрын
I feel like you're right on most points but the problem is that he really isn't unmasking much - if anybody was listening to his music in the first place, aren't they sort of "the choir"? I guess there's nothing wrong with preaching to the choir, but he's not really forcing people to open their eyes to anything. That guy, like your uncle, isn't going to be listening to his music in the first place.
@TFHCFM7 жыл бұрын
Pewpew Lazergun Actually my uncle has listened to it as he likes hip hop, he obviously only liked one portion of the song... Just as any other point a hip hop artist is trying to portray only the people who not only understand the message but the issue and agree with his point or are in tbe middle of the point are going to get the message most of the time, what this song does is set the stage for a conversation and unmask true white racism on a very real level to people who are in the middle and don't think racism still exist. I get what you're saying though, racist aren't going to either hear the song or be effected by it, just like Colin Kaepernick kneeling it serves a different purpose, it opens up room for people to show their racist friends these songs and force an uncomfortable discussion. Which is what he's portraying we need to do as a society to have a better understanding of one another. Which is why they hug at the end, I don't think Rap Critic got that, it wasn't well we have different opinions and it will never be solved, it's now that we've both gotten out what we need to say we have a better understanding of one another. Also I think part of the reason the white guy's hate is so much stronger in the video is because the song is based off his personal experience with racism, he's seen a lot more white racism in his experience. A racist white man will hear every point he's made in a politically correct fashion and average white man will have also heard these points and so any white man listening to this song unless they're in denial should either identify with or understand there is a problem with that way of thinking and it can start a conversation we need to have. Colin Kaepernick did the same thing but he let in room for confusion and allowed racist an easy out with the flag and the anthem. There is no easy out in this song.
