@@TheRealMechaG well for starters george lucas himself stated that sidious was made to represent satan, and pure evil. palps had zero reason to be evil, he just was. he grew up and was raised by a wealthy, influential family of politicians known as the “house of palpatine”. sure, his father was never really there emotionally, but not ONCE does palps ever attribute this to his actions. palps was evil the moment he came out of the womb. from the moment he was able to walk he realized that power was his one and only true love. he killed pedestrians on his speeder and had it swept under the rug, was spoiled with all finer things man could ever desire, yet he didnt care, power was his final goal. when palps began his sith training under plagueis, he murdered his entire family just so he could be the sole carrier of house palpatine. later on, he started a PROXY WAR with ALL sides of the war being obedient to him. they had no idea who was behind it, they just followed palpy’s orders, oblivious to the fact that HE was the reason behind it. why would he do such a thing? to amass total control. when anakin came into the picture, the chosen one, he broke him. plain and simple. not only did he break the messiah of the galaxy, but he enslaved him just as he was as a boy, under the false security that he would be set free. he manipulated every single person he ever came into contact with for one end goal: power. he never cared for any sort of connection, he barely had any allegiance to the sith, he just knew the sith would be a great tool to achieve his grand plan. he was loyal to no one but himself, he tortured and reviled in the suffering he caused to whoever he wanted, and he was a genocidal, omnicidal megalomaniac who was hellbent on getting what he wanted by any means necessary. he dabbled in forbidden sith alchemy to achieve immortality, and the empire ONLY fell because of darth vader’s final shred of humanity shone through. even after that, sidious became a demigod, ridden with pure evil. also, palpatine is perhaps the only villain to successfully fulfill everything he wanted to. he ruled the entire known galaxy and took great pleasure in torturing those whom he ruled over. he manipulated and broke down the chosen one to a literal and metaphorical shell of who he once was, subjecting him to a fate only death could be better than. he was loyal to nobody but himself. sauron almost conquered middle earth, but was defeated. voldemort almost conquered hogwarts, but was defeated. morgoth almost destroyed all of middle earth, but was banished to the very void he wanted to make out of middle earth. palpatine successfully manipulated and turned the republic against the jedi, started a proxy war, corrupted the only person the jedi could have used to further secure the republic, murdered billions, tortured trillions, and he cackled about it as he did so. he sought to destroy even the sith’s philosophy, and even years after the empire, he still had his grasp on the galaxy, creating the first order, created snoke, continued to incite war and chaos on a galactic scale, and he did it all from the shadows of his incomprehensibly corrupted spirit. there is no tragic backstory, no trauma, no rhyme or reason for his evil. he did all of this because he desired it. he backstabbed every ally he made, further proving who it was he was doing this for the whole time; himself. he always was and always will be a vile, disgusting freak who was 100% irredeemable, but this vile freak successfully enslaved the entire known galaxy, something no villain has ever done. wherever he went, torture, despair, agony, hopelessness and fear followed. and he did all of this, his one reason for literally destroying the very concept of sentient spirit, was because he wanted to. he served no one but himself, and it was from birth that he found his horrid purpose, and in death that his spirit of pure evil would live forever. he cant be the antichrist, he cant be the devil’s spawn; he WAS the devil from the moment he was conceived. it’s because of this that all sith after him would carry on his reign of terror, and beyond star wars, no villain, not a single one, could ever match the amount of pure evil that sidious was. from the start, he had already won. it was just a matter of time. until then, he would inflict suffering on a scale unfathomable, and continued to do so. all other villains were somewhat redeemable, and if they weren’t, they were eradicated. not sidious though.

Sauron is honestly not that interesting of a villain. He’s very generic. This isn’t to say he’s not iconic (due to how amazing his movies are) but he himself is not as iconic. He was super powerful yes but this list is not most powerful villains, it’s greatest villains of all time. And you can tell that means most loved and iconic villains. And as much as I hate to say this I only think Sauron made it on this list because of how good the LotR movies were. Those movies weren’t amazing because of him. Sauron wasn’t an amazing villain he was just good.
