I sold a CD copy of AC/DC's Highway to Hell that I bought for $5 for around $200 on Discogs. I had to do some real digging to find out what was going on, as other editions were selling for just a few dollars as expected. Turned out my copy was one of the earliest CD prints & it had been transferred directly from the original masters without any remastering applied, transferred as AAD, so it was the only "original" untouched mix of the album available digitally. All other CD editions after that - including all those released to streaming services - had been remastered & "fiddled with". That is why my copy was really rare and fetched such a relatively high price even though it was "just" a CD, not even mint. Because that specific mix as a digital release was very rare.

Some bands will release a CD with a limited run Boxed Set that includes a concert DVD or Blu-ray. CD collector here, with some vinyl. Discogs is a great resource. I started cataloging my collection right after the 2017 Northern California fires. I have almost 70 successful purchases on there, but I always check seller reviews. I also cross-reference Amazon, eBay, cdjapan, ImportCD, etc. for the best price. I find the chase is better than the catch when trying to fill out my collection. Luckily, with my level of completionism, if I can acquire a physical copy of every available track through a retail $10 copy, then I don't care about the rare limited edition fanclub-only OOP pressing. But, it is an expensive hobby sometimes... I'm not proud of how much I've shelled out on box sets that contain the only CD releases of rare B-sides, promos, and/or previously unreleased material.

I am living in the 90s European electronic music niche mostly. While you wont see thousands, there are many compilations (e.g. Important Compilation #1) or albums (Man with no name - Moment Of Truth) that will hover around the 90-100 usd mark in near mint condition. Yes, vinyl still brings in more money (Dune album LP from 1995 for 300 usd), shipping CDs is so much easier and there are less fatalities in terms of broken or bend records. I had my fair share of broken records. Proper worldwide shipping of extreme expensive records is likewise extremely expensive. And people rarely talk about the pita of customs once you reached a certain threshold of thousands of dollars. Depending on the country you will be in for lots of paperwork. I feel way better to shipping and insuring 50-100 usd CDs all around the globe.

Look at the 2001 Japanese release of South by Heather Nova. Not the promo version, just the standard version: Low: 663 yen (less than $6) Median: 3756 yen (a little over $30) High: 310,895 yen (conversion rate fluctuates, but when it sold that was somewhere around $3000) That had to be some sort of money laundering scheme, right? It doesn't make any sense. There are ten copies for sale on there right now so it's not exactly a rare item, and most of them are priced in the $10-20 range. The copy sold for that outrageous price was apparently mint, but then a mint copy of the very same CD sold for just 1,910 yen (less than $20) less than three months later.

Good info. I know you probably just misspoke but grunge in '91 was not a revival

Does anybody know how that Woodstock release stacks up against something like the releases from the Woodstock Complete Project? I have the 2012 version with 26 discs, and it's a great listen, start to finish.
@carjo5129 күн бұрын
wow people have some deep pockets, but that being said look at vinyl prices for records that are rare. The Herbert Von Karajan box set wow 330 cd's , 24 Dvd's 2 blue rays. Who has the kind of time to listen this one. I like some his work he did .

Probably not the case for the $26 CD cause it was a too obscure band, but.. it is good to mention that there are scammers using discogs too. So if a popular rare item is being sold for a price too good to be true.. its probably a scam.

I suppose that's always a possibility, thanks for watching!

I found some similar pricing for rare CDs on eBay. I still use Discogs a lot. Thanks for watching!
@agomodern9 күн бұрын
I never understood, when I look up any album sold list on Discogs it normally only shows a handful of sales withing a 3 to 5 year spread and somehow that’s what their worth at the moment? Thousands of an album sells, but we’re going to base value off of 5 or so sales?
@CatFish1078 күн бұрын
You have a strange definition of "important". A rare, expensive michael jackson recording is one of the least important things I can think of. Expensive and rare do not equate to important.

Would you like to divide $2600 by 18 CDs (not including vinyls)? It’s not fair to put boxsets into the list. And I think you don’t consider some sales could include a CD with signatures. It can x10 a price (minimally)
@ForeverAnalog8 күн бұрын
Fair point but usually the Discogs seller would’ve included that there is a signature in the description to maximize value and none in this video contained such info or I would’ve pointed it out. Thanks for watching!

makes me think discos would be a good place to launder money, or at least make untraceable payments (I know it can be traced thru the album, but not the 'real' sale, know what I mean?

Low, median, and high is not always accurate. I've bought things for less than what is listed for the low. Discogs getting greedy and wanting to raise the median so they can get a larger cut?

The most expensive CD I've ever bought was $400 though I have things that are worth more and I have seen it sold for as much as $1,400 elsewhere it's an old rap album called livin' that ghetto life a Cincinnati classic very rare as he has passed and it's never been repressed it's on KZbin but I just had to have the real thing you can't find it on legitimate streaming
