All Keen games are technically EGA in that they use a 16-colour EGA graphics mode, though Keen 4, 5, 6, and Dreams figured out how to do smoother scrolling, which works a little more reliably on a VGA card than original EGA hardware

I wouldn't say 2D side-scrollers were underrepresented on MS-DOS. It was just enough of good games in that genre. The problem was that on 16-bit consoles 2D side-scrollers were over-represented with very few games from different genres. The reason was 16-bit consoles had dedicated 2D scrolling hardware and they weren't good anything else. PCs had hardware 2D scrolling on EGA and VGA cards, which lead to a lot of shareware 2D platformers, but they could a lot more. Even floppy DOS games could use 10-20 MB of HDD, so developers could make games with a lot of content, which made Point&Click and RPG games popular. PCs were also suited for strategy, tactic and economy games, along with various simulator/driving games.

Oh man... the earlier ones like Dark Ages, and Pharoahs Tomb/Artic Adventure were what got me through middle school. Just fixating on getting home to boot those up.

why no prehistoric/prehistoric2 ?
@WhitePointerGaming4 жыл бұрын
Prehistorik and Prehistorik 2 were not exclusive to DOS. Both games were also released on Amstrad CPC and the first game was also released on Amiga, Atari ST and Commodore CDTV.

@@WhitePointerGaming I see.. thanks for the answer... Never saw Amstrad CPC - even in emulation...

There was one game, platform, probably 8 or 16 bit, where your health was restored using items that were bottles (like soda bottles). I remember it had lots of green color in its design... but still can't find it. Still scouring the internet just to get the name and maybe a gameplay or something. It came in a bundle with an EPSON computer in 96 or 97. Running windows 95.

There were actually a number of Mega Man games for DOS, but they were all pretty bad. They are the only games I can think of that would fit that description.

Hey there! I'm guessing you're probably thinking of Electroman: www.mobygames.com/game/dos/electroman The game didn't make this list because it's not technically a sidescroller (it's single screen at a time), but it's certainly a candidate for a future DOS-themed video if I decide to do one.
