If you want more information on the Odisea 48, 55 or 62 then send an email to peter@elcanoworldchallenge.org
Maths and physics does not lie good people so this is a very easy and objective way of evaluating your future catamaran purchase. To a large extent I believe to win in the sailing ratios alone is a hollow victory since you should also look at the catamaran's construction and the materials that are used. A sportstar catamaran that will always win the Friday afternoon trophy and get the bottle of red wine will likely not be the most durable cruiser able to take alot of punishment. And that is why I like aluminium, the best boat building material bar none. Light strong and durable it can certainly take the punishment meted out to it.
The Odisea 62 from Odisea Catamarans has just been designed and will soon be built in Vietnam. It is the bigger brother of the Odisea 48 but has much more style, volume and comfort than it's younger brother. It is similar to the Balance 620 in that it is a luxury boat that can take the punishment of a world cruise in comfort. BUT it is lighter and more durable being made of aluminium and because of this the Odisea 62 beats the Balance 620 in all the sailing ratios, namely Sail Area to Displacement, Displacement to Waterline length and Ksp....and of course it beats it in price by a whopping margin. Write me an email to peter@elcanoworldchallenge.org
and I can give you more information.

Peter got his Aluminum Facts right, light weight, strong, aluminum is arguably the best boat building material, titanium would be better but MUCH more expensive.

Great video. Very educational and no doubt will upset many production cat builders with you pulling back the curtain. Sharing your inside baseball will no doubt excite the trolls and see the cat fraternity hit back with their advocacy for “stability” as being the number criterion in boat selection! :o)

Good topic, I feel like there needs to be more information like this out there. Especially about how stats are massaged. Why isn't cabin sole area in the stats. It seems important. How about impact energy needed for a hull penetration. The engineering specs provide this information, yet the consumer is not demanding access. It is almost like the industry is begging to be regulated.

Your explanation of why aluminium is better in impacts is why I have kept an aluminium bicycle frame for MTB rather than move to a considerably lighter carbon fibre frame. CF is great for ultimate performance but if you need ultimate reliability... aluminium

I actually broke the alu frame of a fully suspended MTB during riding on normal tarmac . Granted , the bike was about 20 years old , and their lies the clue : metal fatigue . While steel and titanium can do infinite stress cycles if limited to a maximum excursion limit , no such safe limit exists for alu . Alu will break after some time , no matter how small the stresses are while Ti and steel can be forever . This makes me wonder how good alu is a hull material how long it will last structurally before you need to replace it

I think you mentioned 100 % recyclable, even during construction, is about as good as we can hope. We tend to dismiss end of useful life as part of the “formula”. Being a woodworker, it is tough for me to go 100% aluminum. There are plenty of places in any boat for wood craftsmanship. Plucky, those are huge boats with huge price tags during their useful life. Aren’t there any 40 to 45 ft performance cats that will do what you and most real people want and MAYBE can afford to buy and own?

Great video, glad people are out there like yourself looking behind the curtain of boat builders. Like most things though the devil is in the details and the right answer for what’s best is “it depends”. Every one is going to place priorities in different spots as all boats are just a series of compromises. (Unless you remove budget from the equation lol) Each of the higher end boats you mentioned (Gunboat/HH//Balance/ORC/etc) are all custom builds but the advertised LIghtship displacement includes a ton of equipment that others do not. So although your numbers on the Odesea are phenomenal, the actual livability isn’t apples to apples. If the other boats were built bare bones their numbers would look a bit different. But in general the premise of what you are communicating is spot on and I give you two thumbs up! Just any potential buyers out there, make sure you dig into the details 👍🏻👍🏻

@@SAILINGintoFREEDOM Yep, and if you are going to sail all the way around the world that is the way to go (IMO), a blend of both. I've spoken directly to one of the guys who was crew on the El Cano challenge Outremer with Jimmy, and his account of the mission was very telling. They absolutely could have succeeded with that Outremer but it would have been a miserable slog...and life's too short for miserable slogs!

Interesting that even these very expensive boats will use cheap materials in the construction of the hull. Like it’s the least important to them to impress buyers. The buyers want all the fancy do da of the interior. Recently did a delivery on a $3 million Oyster 6.2. The amount of well engineered door hinges etc and the like, wonderful, compared to no hand holds after coming down the companionway to cross the saloon, tells me a very serious lack of quality or understanding. JMHO Plukky, build us something to make us proud, to be watching you build. 👍

peter - all this metal talk and aluminium talk doesn't deal with metal fatigue - from all the vibrations and twising and turning and work hardening vulnerable areas - how does your aluminium hold up / good stuf on engineering detail / as you know when you are welding an area it changes the metal tension and often creates a weak point - i suggest you get your engineers to look into this and develop some options they offer as an added value when people are building a boat to add to the longevity, life span of a boat too - good stuff - peter what happens after the boat hull is built - have you started fundraising and getting sponsors too - hang in there

@@SAILINGintoFREEDOM Good design may delay problems with metal fatigue but not stop it . Alu has no safe excursion limit when stressed under which it can undergo infinite stress cycles . Steel and titanium do have such a safe limit . In other words , no matter how small the stresses are , alu will eventually break . That is why aircraft fuselages are checked on a regular basis for cracks .

good educational video ,providing information and nurturing inquiry . one evaluation and prize factor is missing ,as it is unfortunately in most advertisements and comments on boats ,including on boat shows and that is the environment factor !. Current and future generations will have to pay a high prize for boat builds that use toxic materials and that need more toxic materials for maintenance/repairs .Even , if an environment tax is not introduced on such new boat builds ,conscientious people can at least take a stance and mention a provisional % prize for environment damage of certain boat builds . It is not only external environment that will be damaged ,certain boat building components will be increasingly found in body tissues of humans and other animal species . To avoid awareness of the responsibility of ones personal desires and actions, will damage the conscience of all perpetrators involved in these dynamics . As a minimum ,research/investigation should be actively pursued to find less toxic materials and better recycling policies and technics . For instance ,how to reuse retired boat hulls for water tanks ,tiny homes ,shelters for homeless ,refugees ........ .

The corrosion issues with aluminum should not be dismissed. Drop a steel screw into the bilge and not get it out and you’ll have a hole in the boat in no time. Anyplace an aluminum boat flexes it will quickly fatigue and crack. I agree aluminum is a good material for boat building but anyone buying one needs to have a good understanding of its drawbacks and limitations. Otherwise your educational videos are great. Hi, it is very clear that anyone who value their life and their family life aluminum is the way to go. You don't want to be an appetizer for a great white shark! I'm always surprise that peoples with millions of dollars are willing to risk it with a brittle material as fiberglass and carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is great for racing but hitting a floating container will end your day in a very bad way and I'm not going to talk about E glass. The ultimate would be a titanium hull without questions......but that is another story.
