It's my favorite era for RPGs as well, so many classics. Both of the Tales games for the PS1 are solid, they just missed the cut for me but would have been honorable mentions. I didn't fall in love with the Tales series until the GC/PS2 era so I don't have as much nostalgia with the older games as I played them later, which played a factor for me tbh

I felt the nostalgia in the way you described these games. This is what retro stuff is all about to me. That feeling you get when you revisit a game that you played and loved as a kid, whether it helped some people escape the world around them, or help brings back other awesome memories from around that same time they were playing these games for the first time. Even if I've never played an old retro game before, I can appreciate the work that went into it with the technology that we had back then. Great list and great explanations of the games. Well done.

Xenogears was supposed to be 6 games. Unfortunately, Square didn’t cared too much about the project and made it only 1 game, which is supposed to be the 5th entry in the series. After Xenogears released, Tetsuya Takahashi (basically the creator of the game) left Square and founded his own company, Monolith Soft (was owned by Namco) , and tried to continue the unfinished story of Xenogears, which led to the release of the Xenosaga Trilogy. Unfortunately, Xenosaga was not that successful and once again, they couldn’t complete the project as intended (still pretty good games, especially Xenosaga 3). After that, Nintendo bought Monolith Soft and Takahashi kind of abandoned the project. Today he is working with the Xenoblade franchise, which I highly recommend if you enjoyed Xenogears (it’s not as ambitious tho). Sorry if you already knew all that lol

@@Luckeh_ man, I'm so bummed because Xenogears is my favorite RPG story of all time and I finally got my hands on an English translated copy of Perfect Works last year and it was worth the 22 year wait 👌🏾 I was playing through Xenoblade Chronicles for the switch and man.... I hate that game and then I hate myself for hating the game that came from our belonged Xenogears creators. It just lacks the character development, dialog and exploration of themes like love, hate, brotherhood, God and man like Gears and instead feels more like an MMO story than a JRPG. I don't know, it was just painful and maybe my hopes were of a story like Xenosaga and Gears were what did it. I stopped playing it after the part where the *SPOILERS BELOW* . ... ... .... ...... Princess joins your team and you help fend off the betrayers of the crown and then I just said "ugh ENOUGH" and stopped playing. Does the story get better?
@Luckeh_2 жыл бұрын
@@xcaluhbration I really gotta read Perfect Works! Regarding Xenoblade, by princess you’re probably referring to Melia, but… I’m not really sure who are the “betrayers of the crown”… maybe you’re talking about the Bionite Order? Well, the story definitely gets better and has a pretty Xeno finale, but I agree with you that the character development is pretty lackluster in the first Xenoblade… Personally, I prefer Xenoblade 2, even though it’s pretty slow and with some shonen anime jokes here and there at the beginning of the game, when the story picks up it’s really really good, with great world building and some of the best developed characters in the whole franchise. It’s also full of Xenogears and Xenosaga references that make it even better in my book! :P The thing is, originally, Xenoblade 1 was gonna be called “Monado: Beginning of the World” and was completely isolated from the rest of the Xeno games. That’s when Satoru Iwata, former president of Nintendo (RIP…), wanted to honor Takahashi by including the Xeno name in his new game. So the first game was not supposed to be part of the Xeno series at all and then, in Xenoblade 2, Takahashi decided to connect it to the other games, which really enriched the Xenoblade lore and made it much more complex and better.
@xcaluhbration2 жыл бұрын
@@Luckeh_ wow dude, that adds a lot more context to what I experienced, thanks, that actually makes me less indignant towards X1. I think I'll skip through Xenoblade 1 and try out to 2, maybe I'll like it a bit more. That perfect works book in English is one you can't get unless you know someone who can get you the link last I checked. The author is always doing what they can to duck and dodge Squareenix legal department, which is dumb because Squenix should just embrace the guy and sell his works through their own site as it is quality. 😘👌🏾 I think playing Xenogears at such an impressionable age as 14 really screwed me up for a lot of other stories in games and movies because by the time I played Suikoden 2 I finished it and was like "Meh". It wasn't until Star Wars KOTOR that I finally was amazed by an RPG story again, which if you haven't played it I highly recommend KOTOR 1 and 2 which you can even download in an app store because the 2nd game in the series does the GREATEST exploration, critique and attempts at answering the question of "what is the nature of the force" through the use of a character that I can only think of as a mix of Karelian, The Sages, Grahf and Elly. In fact this particular character is one I'll put up against any in fiction as an example of brilliant writing, critical thinking and one that challenges the players thought processes.... But I digress. What did you think of Xenosaga, if you had the chance to play them.

At least every character in Trigger was compelling in their own way (even many of the enemies)! Awww... fuggit, Cross deserves a 5/10 because the story doesn't really pull you in either.... wait... weak characters and uncompelling story... maybe 5 is too high.... let's go 4/10... Wondering why I played this at all? Oh yeah, I was looking to the ties to Trigger, which are barely there at all. I much rather have this then FF VII remake if im being honest. On the same level of Skies of arcadia. The story it self is also very solid, well not entirely overly complex like xenogears but still offers such a immersive experience and banty humerous anime like dialogue strewn about. Legend of Dragoon and Legend of Legaia were two games I had played demos of and always wanted to play fully as a kid, but never could. I dont mind the battle transition in BoF 3 but the random encounter frequency got waaaay too much after awhile. And im usually forgiving of random encounters.

I really wish they would bring back the Suikoden series. I loved the first two games. I never got to play the later ones, but the original two were definitely in my top five JRPGs of ALL TIME (along with Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy IV).

My first RPG experience was also on the PS1. It was Beyond The Beyond. Most didn't care for it but I certainly did. Still play it this very day. FF7 and Suikoden 1/2 were the others I played on the PS1. I think I bought FF9 but I don't recall playing it much if ever.

Neat list! I still need to play Xenogears, I keep hearing so many good things about it that I feel like I missed out on something really good. Until I do play Xenogears, my favorite non Final Fantasy RPGs on the PS1 are Star Ocean, Tales of Destiny, and Breath of Fire 3. Honorable mentions going to Azure Dreams, Chrono Cross, and Grandia.

GO PLAY XENOGEARS! YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY! That being said, I'd strongly suggest that in the first factory warehouse looking place to not run around and get into battles and instead first stop for a few minutes to appreciate Yasunori Mitsuda's masterpiece "Awakening". Why it was used as BGM for a place where you get lots of random battles is beyond me, as it's been a permanent fixture on my MP3 player for decades now!

A decent list. Not the same list I would have chosen, but pretty close. Nice vid.

WOW, this is practically identical to my top 10. First time I have ever seen someone come that close, you have really great tastes.

Nice! Sounds like you have some quality taste as well. Now you got me curious since ours are so close, where does yours differ?

@@GamingBroductions I would probably end up replacing Legend of Legaia with Vagrant story. Legend of Legaia was certainly a great game but I think it follows more in line with the hidden gem catigory. Well the combat system was unique, inovative for the time, the story and world it self could have been a bit more polished. Though I have to admit, I spent countless hrs drawing charts and notes for that game. The mechanics for the battle system was certainly alot of fun to play around with. If you perhaps didn't include Vagrant story because of how close it is to being recognized as a Final Fantasy title, then my next one in that list would be Valkrie Profile. But as I said, pretty close even down to the order in which your games are listed.

Also I’m with you with Lunar too. I loved them both but I prefer Silver Star story a little more over Eternal Blue. I wish we could have gotten at least two more. We already saw a new white and red dragon with the first two so I would love to see the new blue dragon and black dragon lol

It is a real shame the Lunar series is one that didn’t make it past the PlayStation. I really loved the aesthetic and charm those games provide, I just wanted more damnit! lol

9:00 one of the NES dragon quest games did that really effectively...it's a great way to introduce you to characters, even if most of them won't be in your party for most of the game. i don't know why more games didn't copy it

i got Xenogears from my sisters EX bf. he said "Treat this like gold" this statement held onto me even today, as i have dove into most of these games on the list ie, SO2, CC, BOF3 and one gem i saw witch was valkrie profile, is a 2D JRPG platformer that had a pretty good combat turn based button mash system with combo meter to unleash even more devastating attacks also has a wonderful sound track same artist as SO2, pretty good cast of characters and alot of fully voiced, combat sequences / Story Vo's and these VO'S didnt skimp out because there was a good amount of emotional moments. some top notch artwork and a pretty hidden deep ending if you did things in the right order. or a standard ending if you missed one thing. also based off difficulty levels.

Xenogears I feel is a bit overly ambitious for what it tried to achieve, had this game came out years later, it may have made a more cultural impact. I think its garnered a further appreciation as a cult hit now more then anything because the audience has grown up and is able to further understand its complex thematic elements and naratives. For a game that tried to literally surpass the conventional style of story telling for its demographic in jrpgs and for this medium in general, for many years it remained a one of a kind product of its era and despite its convulated rushed disk 2 ending and also the fact that Takahashi was never able to invision his full 6 episode "epic", it still remains one of the best rpgs for the ages and quite frankly nothing has ever really came close, until Legend of heroes "trails". So for that, it deffinitly deserves its spot as number 1 on your list.
@blackhawksfan25252 жыл бұрын
What you're saying is that it was years ahead of its time. And you're right. That's why it's so great. It had two limitations. 1 - Square Enix gave FF8 something like 10x the funding that Xenogears got. 2 - Hardware limitations. If they remade this game with the same characters, same soundtrack, same plot, similar battle mechanics, on current gen game systems, it would be hands down the best RPG ever made.

False, Xenogears was developed by Squaresoft and was a success considering it wasn't a worldwide release. The director Tetsuya Takahashi and his wife Soroya Saga submitted a script for the next FF (FF7) which was rejected for being too dark but were allowed to make a game based on its script and Xenogears was born. He and his wife left Square when they refused to make any sequels which they had planned and they set up monolith soft who made Xenosaga 1-3 which Bandai Namco published on PS2. Nintendo bought them out and that led to Xenoblade being a thing with a bigger budget and scope.
