Pokemon revolution online is one of the best fangames. Got several regions. Kanto, Johto and Hoenn atleast from when I last played. Probably even added more since and there is a lot you can do. Battling, trade pokemons, Ev-training, it's also having events with special event rewards like outfits for you and your pokemons.

The dark rising trilogy has aged pretty badly, even the new pre-sequel that came out last year feels....eh. Life of Guardians, the 3rd Ruby Destiny game however has aged well enough I'd say, well enough to give it a try.

Definitely Pokemon Anil. It's a fan game that's basically pokemon gen 1 in the style of gen 5. It has mega evolution, animated sprites, an updated soundtrack, etc.

By far the best Fan Game I played this year is Pokemon Tectonic, the romhack were battles are actually good, due to major balance changes to the battle system. They actually managed to make every pokemon unique by giving them either a unique abilities or several unique completely new signature moves. Take a standard normal type pokemon like Raticate: It now has the Ability 'Filthy': immune to Poison type and boost both defensive stats if hit by one. Alternatively, it could have the ability 'Gnawing' which doubles the secondary effect chance of Biting moves (like Crunch and Hyper Fang), which means its Poison Fang now has a 100% (up from 50% in this game) chance to Poison and Hyper Fang a 80% chance to Flinch, which sounds broken. Yet, it isn't since all statuses (and weathers btw) have been reworked and pokemon that are flinched, become immune to flinch for 3 turns, so you can't flinch lock pokemon anymore. It also has a completely new region and story, and some megas and gigantamax forms have been turned into evolutions. For example, Butterfree can evolve again at lvl 40 (into a fakemon that is just his gigantamax form from Sword/Shield), which means its usable in late game as well. Pokemon Re:Union was great yes, but it was still standard pokemon, which meant that most battles were just: "set up and click 'A' a bunch to sweep". Story was pretty good though.

@mebreevee I highly recommend checking it out! It's a fangame with a whole unique region and story. One thing I love about it is the rebalancing and their philosophy of "no Pokemon left behind", meaning you can use any Pokemon on your team for the game. No real grinding. Neat regional forms. Many gimmick forms (ex. Mega evolution) just become a new evolution.
