The top 10 worst college majors, that’s what this video is all about…
This is gonna make some people mad, but I have to make it.
There are some college degrees that aren’t worth it most of the time, there are some degrees that usually aren’t worth it, and there are some college majors that can be great depending on your situation.
Some of the worst bachelor's degrees will cause you to get deep in student loan debt without giving you much of an upside when it comes to how much you can earn with your salary. On this list, we will talk about some of these really bad majors that you should avoid at all costs except for very specific situations.
Enjoy :)

Actually, gender studies is a decent prelaw undergrad because you can begin to develop a unique and strong perspective on how gender affects people and society and start specializing in certain types of law. The problem is that some students and teachers use gender studies as a platform to push agendas rather than honestly investigate gender.

Many of the students I work with in performing arts want to start their own non profits so think about adding on business and entrepreneurship courses. Others decide to go into teaching but end up having to spend more money on alternative certification because they did not think about taking education classes while still in college. When you do pick your program, find out if the college helps you get internships and job placement afterwards. Make sure you are willing to move away from your hometown after graduation because many jobs will be in Dallas, Chicago, and Atlanta in addition to LA and NYC. Look at cruise ship performance employment, if you want to travel and see the world.

some people, even in STEM, hate CS and i can understand why because it is extremely tedious and unappreciated work. programming is in everything we use these days but people have no appreciation for it or what it took to be created. they only care that when they push a button on their electronic device that it works. this is why i discovered, on a personal level, that i do like programming but only if the program accomplishes something not pertaining to computers themselves. for example, if i create a SAS program to gather data and create a regression model that predicts the movement of a stock, then there is a sense of gratification in that it was used to do something in finance, and that in turn is motivating. this is why if i were in a profession such as Data Science, then i could stomach the programming portion but if i were for example a software engineer i'd go nuts spending hours and hours redesigning let's say the Windows operating system to stop it from crashing relentlessly. Omg that latter scenario would be a nightmare, but i used to know programmers in the early days of computers who would spend days writing programs just to move a stupid block around on the screen and they loved it, so it takes a certain type of hyper nerdy personality to be a pure programmer. everybody calls himself or herself a nerd these days but these folks were the true, original nerd, the ones with TP stuck to their shoe when they exited the bathroom, the ones who were so dorky they didn't even realize it. those are the creme de la creme in the computer world.

College is supposed to be a return on investment, and these colleges make so much money off students who major in non-essential degrees, make sure your education is reliable and interesting. I've learned that the value of your education depends on the demand of the market. Fine arts and performing arts don't require an expensive education to verify your ability, it's better to utilize social media tools (Instagram)(Spotify) to express your content and build a portfolio, such as being a freelancing photographer. The entertainment industry will never disappear, you just have to find a plausible niche in the market for your artistic ability.

But I will say this: if you feel it in your bones that your future is to be a HISTORIAN and you roll out all the stops and you know the financial future you face (which is to say, a modest one, neither impoverished nor rich), then I say to you, full speed ahead. Become a historian. Be a researcher. The world needs those specialists and if you become the best at it then there will be employment for you even if you have to go to where it's at.

We’ve all heard the talk of “useless” college majors. But fortunately there is a way to leverage a useless degree. Supplement technical,business, or professional minors, certifications, licenses, or graduate degrees. Even if your major is under basket towel weaving if you have a few IT, data analyst is, business, HR, or finance certifications or minors you can have a good back up career. Law school, MBA, MD are good choices too. Some professional graduate programs are saturated and you would have to look at the employment outcomes of the programs like law and business. Also, some government jobs exist where simply a BA is required. Networking is also key. No major is “useless” in that you can’t succeed with it. It’s just the level of risk you are willing to take. Also, some employers may ask why they should hire you over someone with a vocational degree. If they do tell them that your education has given you a superior foundation that others with highly technical degrees.

Unfortunately limited perspective of what a career in arts and creative practice really looks like in the context of academia. Also important to realize that no major in being learned in a silo. Most students take classes between departments, outside their major, etc. (Especially arts majors, a necessary experience/skill in a more multidisciplinary world) I think it’d be cool to acknowledge how diverse what you can actually do with an arts degree beyond just being a practitioner or doing studio based work. There’s a huge research component (and beyond) that becomes opens up to you once you’ve gotten the degree mostly because these roles exist in the context of academia or collaborations with similar institutions

The problem as I see it with these degrees is that they train people in something for which they must have an innate talent. If they have the innate talent, then the degree isn't worth the cost, and if they don't have the innate talent, then the degree is worthless. A person might not be particularly adept at being a plumber but if he can get through training then he can at least do a decent job of plumbing or else he would fail the training course, but with the arts, a person can get through the degree and be completely incompetent at his or her chosen art.
@stevenliang3213
@stevenliang3213 2 жыл бұрын
The problem here is that these liberal art degrees is not something that’s so easily taught via formal education. Accounting is something that requires training and every person has to follow the same rules of US GAAP or IFRS. There is a right and wrong way of doing things But when it comes to painting or dancing, what is the “correct” way? It’s all subjective It makes me think if there is any use for formal education of the liberal arts. Sounds like a money scam
@marksmith4892
@marksmith4892 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevenliang3213 well, after digging deeply enough, EVERYTHING is found to be subjective. I mean who established GAAP as the "correct" way? Even the "laws" of physics are ultimately just assumptions. They're based on empirical observation of course but those observations are being extrapolated into the future so a skeptic could challenge those underlying assumptions and delve into the philosophy of the unknown. I understand your point which is that, unlike the arts, STEM are based on axiomatic or fundamental assumptions such as 1+1=2 which have a long history of being reliable/never deceiving us, but for those with innate artistic talent, the tools and knowledge conveyed to the graduate *are* valuable. As I said previously, the degrees are too expensive but if only they were cheaper they would be worthwhile. For instance, suppose someone took up a musical instrument and created a song or two that was exceptionally good. Don't you think that such a person would benefit from a formal education?? Could such a person become self-taught? Perhaps, but that doesn't mean a formal education isn't a viable option.
@Laz3rCat95
@Laz3rCat95 2 жыл бұрын
There may be some inherent traits which can give you an advantage in arts, but they're still skills that you have to practice to obtain just like any other. I think the real issue with the arts degrees is that you don't necessarily need the degree to demonstrate you've gained the skills. If you just do enough self-guided practice outside of the school setting plus perhaps taking some online courses or consulting with artists outside of the school setting, that'll be enough to gain the skills. When people want to hire artists, they simply look for people who demonstrate the skills best, not necessarily who has a degree in it like in other fields.

@@a.b3203 that's not a counter-argument; it's a corroborating argument, and why do you put innate talent in quotation marks?? the hypothetical example you cited perfectly illustrates what i'm talking about because either a person can sing or can't sing and no amount of vocal lessons is going to change that, but any music instructor will be happy to take money from any rando with a shitty singing voice and give him or her lessons, same as a college.

Colleges want people who can teach composition so make sure if you do want to teach at the college level to get 18 hours of composition courses in addition to your literature courses. The college accrediting agencies are looking at that and many colleges who want no findings will screen through your transcripts to see if you have at least 18 hours in the courses they want you to teach. Im glad you put psychology on here, because it is a highly intellectual field that requires those who are deeply passionate about psychology, and are intelligent and self aware enough for it in regards to clinical psychology. I plan to be a therapist/psychologist, and a psychologist professor at a university. So yes! This field is not for those who want to just earn a lot of money fast, or a quick and easy field to graduate with. If you aren't passionate about understanding yourself and others, then leave psychology alone! -if your interest is the knowledge of psychology only, it's best to read and listen about depth psychology at your own time! Psychology is not a major to take if you aren't passionate; about helping others and yourself on a archeological/adventurous way. For the mind, heart and body are only for those who are sure they want to be psychologists! I am sure that I want to be a psychologist, and I'll make sure to be the elite kind of psychologist! So that only a few are chosen for this career, for only a few elite level psychologists would help a many generations-much more than a beginner level psychologist who doesn't take full interest in selfishly helping others, whilst learning about themselves through the victories of successful therapy. Do not take psychology if you don't deeply want to help others and learn about yourself in exploratory ways with helping others! Glad you showed that psychology is not a casual field.. It frustrates me to see people use pop psychology, theory systems and cliches, and dare to call themselves “psychologists”. I mean only pro-psychologists use these psychological system theories for secondary purposes in therapy. So yes! Psychology is not for casuals or those who stupify the field. It will only be a major that'll earn you 6 figures only of you have planned out the areas you want to build your career opon! For me it's to be a psychologist, but also become a professor, author of psychology-plus, I plan to get into law and the policies of education via the philosophy major, and finally be a researcher of neuroscience. This is my solid plan. So unless you don't have a solid plan, don't enter psychology! It'll be a waste of time if you don't know what you are doing or aiming at and if you simply aren't passionate for it deeply. Unlike many of these majors, psychology can be the best major of all! Because understanding existence, relations; of others and oneself, of development and personality- are what has brought us the modern era. If psychology didn't exist (thankfully it does thanks to courageous individuals), our societies would have died before the peek of the industrial revolution.

hey i have a quite similar plan. i have been fascinated about philosophy, psychology and neuroscience for a good while now. i am gonna be a senior in highschool this year. tho i love those subjects, i have to set those aside since my ultimate goal at the moment is to be financially stable and independent as fast as possible. i chose to study business analytics/administration + HR/marketing. basically double majors with one in business. i dont plan to be the top tier businesswoman tho, i just want to have a stable job with a decent income to put into my savings, buy my own house and be under $0 debt. and then im gonna go study the subjects that im passionate about in universities! haha. i LOVE research, i LOVE in depth and logical explanations of those subjects. however when it comes to money and career i have to be realistic. i need money to sustain my interests and to live comfortably with all the money ready when i have children or in any emergency cases. i highly agree with everything you said about psychology. i was kinda depressed and insanely anxious and i was having hour long panic attacks daily during the covid lockdown. basically it is a long story but after going down so many rabbit holes, internet traps, death ideology analysis and disconnection with my own well-being, i realized that i need to put my own health at the top of my priority. simply, because i am an emotional human being, existing in this body and this mind. i cannot deny my biology and psychology. i cannot deny the society that i am living in as i cannot deny my roots. so, to save myself, i need to understand what tf is happening in MY own world. thats how it happens, lol. i plan to work + study my butt of in the business/HR field to gain at least 2 years of working experiences after 4 years in college. hopefully after 10 years, if my career is stable and i have a decent financial status i can spare more time studying in university again!!!!

I'm from Pakistan and psychology's scope is not on that level where it should be so i hope that everything goes well .

I graduated 5 years ago with a bachelors in piano performance!! Definitely not the wisest choice, but I only came out of school with $8k in debt, which is almost paid off. (State school/lived with parents) Definitely don't do music unless you are ok with working in education! Because there are jobs, but they're all in music education. I work with a lot of music directors who love what they do and have a good life. But I also work with music directors who only pursued music because they liked performing, but hate teaching, so now they're miserable and bitter.

I feel you Aliya, I am in my senior year of music performance(violin). One thing that I realized is that I wouldn’t like to go into education. I do love playing but am realizing that it wouldn’t be the best as a living. I might have to change my direction for grad school.

Yeah music education seems to be the most viable path for jobs after college if you're pursuing a music degree since you can then work at any school as a music teacher. I guess composition can be a viable degree too, after all companies do still want composers from film scores, game scores, etc. If your goal is to be a performer you're better off majoring in marketing than music imo. The marketing skills will prove valuable to promoting yourself and you can gain performance skills through mainly self-guided practice or make music a minor if you feel it's necessary.

@@Laz3rCat95this is exactly what i’m doing! i want to go into music professionally but i’m majoring in marketing so 1) i can learn how to market myself & my work 2) i can learn about business and apply it to the music industry and 3) i can get a more conventional marketing job after college if music doesn’t work out. i’ll be making music & performing throughout college because i’m not really into a traditional music degree anyway
