The Genesis sold well in the US. It was the main rival to the Nintendo SNES. Sega started screwing up with weird projects like Sega CD and 32x which culminated in the Sega Saturn disaster which could have been promising if managed properly. It would be cool if Sega made a new console today, they already have the publishing arm ready.

@@iwanttocomplain I've owned the master system 1, then the mega drive... I've passed on the Saturn but bought the dreamcast. After that system I've lost interest in gaming. It was just when shenmue 3 Kickstarter was announced when I've decided to buy a ps4 and to fund the game. The DC had so many great games, considering it's short lifespan... The games he bigger with more sophisticated graphics and animations. But as you say, it's mostly about shooting your way through the map, very little imagination, and often large spaces to run, deride or drive through with little more to do but killing. For instance, the depth of detail, even if its only a small map by today's standards, of shenmue is still unseen. Nobody is interested to give Names and daily schedule to npcs, even a home address, just to pick one example. Given fresh ideas to have with games like jet set radio, floigan bros, sorry magnetic neo.... Nowadays you've got to look for innovation or something different mostly in indie titles. Triple A ttles are mostly what we already know, with a new storyline, improved graphics and mechanics, probably bigger exakte, but rarely innovation comes with triple A titles nowadays

Definitely a good video, though I do disagree with that site's placement of Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd 1 (to me, nothing touches PS. Even if you're not big on JRPGs, there's so much to like there.) Still a handy and concise look at the console. The SMS will always have the allure of being "the other 8-bit console", at least in the States. Because of the relatively small library of US releases, I think a lot of people write it off even today as only having maybe 5 games worth a dang. With the launch and jailbreak of the Mega SG, hopefully that opinion will change for the better. Thanks (:

I mean I still put it in my top 5 Sonic games today, as many do. It's truly 1 of the best games of the entire 90's. When I saw Sonic 1 at #2 I assumed Oh Ok, Triple Trouble is 1 great. And it wasn't? SMS kept getting ports of games well after the SNES came out. MK was released for four consoles in 1993, SNES, SG, Game Gear and Gameboy. The Master System port was based off of the Game Gear version and came a year later. Of course the game was originally released in arcades in 1992. In the early console war days there was more overlap between generations than there is today. NES still saw new games as late as December of 94 and the SNES came out in the US in 91.
