I heard a rumor that Ash was supposed to gain a Gigalith at some point in Unova; but the reason he didn't was due to issues with animating the legs for the pokemon. Gigalith could've become Ash's ace pokemon for that team (especially with Pikachu's lackluster performance), though Krookodile took that spot.

Choosing sceptile and blaziken over swampert is a joke. Firstly you can solo the game with swampert like it's nothing. Secondly it's used both in battle frontier of emerald in many many teams, not to mention competitively. Lastly saying venusaur is a joke, is silly since kanto was a region that the grass starter was objectively the easiest choice for a smooth gameplay.

Higher base overall stat, only one weakness which you won't really face in hoenn, can literally solo the entire game with it (especially the gyms), and is part of battle frontier teams more than any other starter not only in hoenn but also up until gen3 in general. It's the best starter in hoenn.
