Track racing games aren't my favourite, but other people love them, so Longshot: The Dice Game and Heat Pedal to the Metal have that genre covered as far as my collection goes. Thunder Road: Vendetta is more than a pure racing game because of the PVP element, and becasue that kind of feels like a fun activity where people mostly do stuff that could be funny rather than try seriously to win. As soon as I can break away from track racing to games that are races but aren't track racing, I tend to enjoy them more. The Quest for El Dorado is a good example of this, but that one is very much a pure race. I tend to go off the rails a bit after that and try to squeeze in games that are races or have races that aren't quite what people consider "racing games".

Longshot is a blast, and Thunder Road is a different type of carnage which 100% encourages wild risk taking and driving, and I absolutely love it. Quest for El Dorado is a fantastic game full stop, and could fit in the deck building or race genre. "Race" can get very esoteric as a concept.

Quest for El Dorado is #2 for me. Cubitos is still my favourite. More than Heat, more than Thunder Road, more than all the other ones you mentioned. In my second play of Heat, it dawned on me that all I was doing was controlling the speed of the car. I like being able to choose my direction and choosing what I upgrade during the race to give me the feel of progression.

El Dorado is such a fantastic game. Cubitos is one I've heard a lot about, some of our wider crew have played it and enjoyed it! Entirely fair criticism of Heat, it's about the speed for sure. There are some amazing looking racing games due out this and next year, so this list might be worth revisiting at the end of 2025

@@boardstupiduk Heat might be the most popular race game of today (maybe El Dorado has sold more?), so I'm not trying to criticize it, but just point out why it doesn't work for me. I think it's what made me realize Cubitos and El Dorado were my favourite race games.

Absolutely, we LOVE HEAT, but that it's speed only is a fair point of order that's worth raising and makes sense! Appreciate your thoughts. El Dorado is just an amazing game regardless of genre and the more I play the more I enjoy it.

Great list! We deff have some overlap between yours and my top 20 racing board games series! The only two that didn’t overlap was Camel Up because it was at 21 for me which I hated because I love the game and Long Shot the Dice Game I ended up not including because I wanted to keep it a bit more racing focused than so betting focused. Yeah there are plenty of pure racing games but we just so happen to enjoy the extra spice of the betting layer, which is represented here in our list. When Joy Ride comes out that is likely going to shatter this list so we're going to need to revisit it next year as Joy Ride is AWESOME. Thanks for the sub!

@@boardstupiduk Yea there was two I was sad hadn't released in time for my list because I think they both would have done well, which are Formula GP & Pole Position. Deff wanting to try out Joy Ride too.

That's the thing man, the hobby keeps on moving forward - there are always new releases! Joy Ride is great, played a demo of it last year, one of the team is awaiting Kickstarter fulfilment. Formula GP looks insanely good, but might end up playing a bit long for me and be a bit too heavy. Pole Position might be more in the sweet spot

Waiting to get Heat to the table. Made the mistake when I broke it out to let a non-gamer attempt to teach the rules and ended in a terrible experience for all 6 of us. Lesson learned. Need to break it out again now that the trauma has subsided with 6 months of healing. If it hits good, then might need to get the expansion. Imagine we will continue to get more expansions with time. Defintielt thought we were getting a smaller box expansion than Heavy rain was. Definitely 1 more in the works with the 8th car.

Dude heat is amazing but it is not a beginner level game. It's not an advanced game either, but somewhere in the middle. It has a funky turn structure and some concepts that need to be understood and are probably too much for beginners. Once everyone is on board it's absolutely fantastic as a hand management racing game, especially with the garage module.

Great list. I would really add Cubitos and another that’s not really a “racing” game per se but Wandering Towers as another great one.

Couldn't agree more with Heat, and also love Long Shot. The Quest for Eldorado is on my wish list. I hear great things about Ready Steady Bet, did you consider it?

We 100% considered Ready Set Bet, however we had tried to get a copy at Spiel last year but it was sold out pretty much immediately and we never got the chance to play it. I will say though that Ready Set Bet is almost PURE betting, with very little to the race element. Quest for El Dorado is amazing fun Steve.

Haven't played it dude!! However I've looked it up and it sounds absolutely AWESOME. Consider it an unofficial number 6. If I get a chance to play a copy I will definitely look out for it. Thanks for the recommendation!
