As a young man, I saved up to buy a Remington 870. Although I had fired this shotgun literally a thousand times, in the presure of my first skeet competition I forgot to pump the gun on a double. It was an awful embarrassment, but, a great lesson. I never failed to cycle the gun after a shot again. At least I learned while losing a contest rather than losing my life in a self-defense encounter.

Agree that shotguns are hard for many people to handle (especially new shooters) and they do lack capacity. But they're not subject to the same awful restrictions as other popular firearms and have a defensive potential that's hard to beat, especially at the typical engagement ranges.

I carried a 14” Benelli M1 Super 90, for a Sheriff’s Office, and couldn’t make it through a single qualification course without a major malfunction, that couldn’t be fixed by the armorer “in the field”. Granted it was old, and well used, and abused. Every other agency I worked for, I had either a 870 or 590, and never had an issue with them! Yes, a pump gun is more complicated than just turning the safety off and pulling the trigger. This being said, you have to train with it, just like any other firearm that you would use in a life and death situation, whether you’re a combat troop, LEO or civilian that carries or has a home defense gun.

Thanks for your service! I own two Benelli M4's and one of them is a Class 3 14" SBS. It really is strictly a home defense weapon since it's not very effective at longer ranges. I understand that the vast majority of people cannot, or will not, own a Benelli M4, but in my experience they are the most effective, useable, and reliable shotguns on the planet. Due to the reduced recoil from the ARGO system and the Limbsaver butt pad I had my gunsmith install, when firing # 3 or 4 buckshot, they are also enjoyable to shoot for extended periods. NO aching shoulder! That alone makes them worth every penny. I also own an M2 and would like to add an M3 to my collection. Will do someday...maybe soon?

To a degree, even a pump action can choke on certain loads, you also have to factor in that people can mess up the shucking action. From what I’ve seen, the 1301 at the #1 spot can run almost anywthing.
@craigfreger79583 жыл бұрын
I'd put the pump-action guns ahead of the semi-autos for a home defense application, but your list is solid. I'd also swap in the Kel-Tec KS7 for the KSG. The KS7 is much lighter, smaller, and easier to maneuver in a home than the KSG, and it's also easier to use. The KS7 cycles like butter - much smoother than the KSG. Seven (+1) 2-3/4" shells, with a side-saddle for reloading, is plenty of firepower. It can kick, but low-recoil 2-/3/4" defensive loads work well with it. If that's not enough rounds, there's a magazine extension for a total of eleven 2-3/4" rounds in the tube. Another way to go is with a dozen mini-shells of #4 Buck or 1.0 oz slug in the standard tube; seventeen or so mini shells with the extended tube.

Very interesting review. Here is the thing about home defense that needs to be addressed. Who is the home defender? That should be, but rarely is, the first question that needs to be asked. For us at OPSol, that was the ONLY question. In our cases, specifically, it was wives and daughters. As a result, we developed the OPSol adapter specifically (at the time), for the Maverick 88, using Aguila Minishells (again, this was 8 years ago). Low recoil, lethal, extra rounds, and almost all they family can grab it and use it. Mossberg, to their credit, saw what we were working toward, and after a year of having some adapters to work with, rolled out the shockwave at Shot Show 2017, with the adapter and minishells. Put a brace on a shockwave, with this combination, and see the difference. Home Defense is a Family Effort.

The shotgun has always been my last choice in a home defense role. That said, my shotgun choices tend to gravitate towards the 870/500 pump AS LONG AS the time is committed to learning the weapon. @MarcoFromTropoja3 жыл бұрын
I agree. While they are extremely accurate, they are just really bulky and it would be hard to maneuver in your home with a long gun vs a handgun. Follow up shots are extremely slow too, especially with a pump action. You miss your first shot and you're screwed. Atleast with a pistol you can pop off multiple rounds in a matter of seconds.

Great channel and thanks for serving. My take on it goes like this: for new shooters even though the 12ga has a lot of recoil, in a home defense situation that stopping power could prove the difference. If a new shooter uses a pistol they might have to land a few rounds to end the fight. But with a 12ga most likely not. I would stick with a semi auto shotgun though instead of a pump for new shooters. That Tavor 12 is awesome btw 😊

Completely agreed that the sound alone of a pump-action shotgun racking will not deter a bad guy...... But on the other hand if you rack a shotgun and the individual does not seem in any way deterred you now have a very important piece of information about that individual which may be critical in the coming seconds.

I prefer the Mossberg 500/590. I had a 500 as a teenager (still have it!). Mossbergs are reliable, and durable. Pumps in general are easy to use. Though a double barrel (Side x side) is a good choice for ease, just no capacity. In states like NY, where it can take a year or longer for a handgun license, it's easy to get a shotgun. (Except for NYC, where you need a license...)

I'm not sure if it's the best, but I certainly appreciate the details on the different choices you've lined out on the video. I would do the panzer and then save up for the Benelli.

I honestly just want a side by side coach gun. And I just love break action shotguns in general. Though, you're usually only getting one or two shots.

We depend on a stoeger coach gun...it is only 2 ready shots, but absolutely simple, reliable, and quiet...my instructions to the missus: anyone at bedroom door, blow them up...just ambush the sh!t outta them...she has a .38 handy if needed, but 1 shell of 00 will solve most problems...

I still feel like the standard KSG is the best shotgun for home defense. Not only is it a high capacity pump action, but it's one of the most compact shotguns in existence lengthwise, and it has the ability to hold all accessories you could ever want.

I instantly become skeptical when I see the title of a video as "The top" or "The best of the best" because the video always turns out to be the persons favorite firearm or the one that he owns, which is okay. I would like to see the titles be changed to like, "Great choices for home defense shotgun or whatever." Too many fine firearms out there to be selecting a handful and state they are the best or the top. With that being said, the best firearm is the one that you train and train with.

Don’t believe you needed to qualify that you’re “not a lawyer”, you weren’t giving legal advice. Definitely sound advice though. No law degree required there.

The anti-gunners don't care if it's legal advice or not. They'll sue. OR you could consider their thought process as: When it doubt, sue.

I've got about a dozen different shotguns. But the shotgun I loved the most is a Smith and Wesson, Eastfield - Model # 916. This 12 gauge is chrome and wood. The prettiest shotgun I've ever seen in my life. I've owned it now for 45 years. Answer to your question is a shotgun good for home defense? Definitely yes. I personally would grab an AR15. This shotgun is what my wife would grab. It's an improved cylinder. This pump shotgun has never failed to function properly. I've shot everything through it from slugs, 00 buck to #8.
@mikewillis5063 жыл бұрын
I dont see any issues using a shotgun for home defense. Granted its not a 30rd 300blk "best home defense armament " but it should get the job done and shotguns are very versatile. Also I would love to own that FAL, already got a spot on my wall for it

I have the Benelli m4 and I think it's better then your number one pick. Holds more ammo better recoil just the price sucks. But the best home defence firearm is the one you have.

I have an Mossberg 590 and a police trad-in Rem 870. Never felt under gunned with either and combined only cost me half of what your top pick costs. Look for good quality used pump shotguns folks. They rarely wear out and live forever. Parts are easy to get if you ever need them.
