Ok to be fair, after spading all of the heavy night fighter DO-17s/DO-217s, I very much liked having all the guns and cannons early game to intercept unsuspecting bombers and clueless fighters who think you’re a bomber until you turn them into a fireball crashing to earth. I guess it’s an acquired taste. Also with the YaK-15, it wasn’t meant to be a combat aircraft, rather a jet trainer to transition WWII veteran YaK pilots to more modern jets like the YaK-23 or MiG-9.

Do217 at 2.0 with minengeshoss rounds is insane. Just climb and force headons! Biplane on your tail? Just dive and outrun him, letting loose some 15mm from the turret while doing so. Very niche game play but very satisfying, totally underrated plane!

Do-217 made perfect sense because it was a night fighter. It never had to turn fight, only get on rear of bombers that it detected with on-board radar, and empty the amassed concentration of cannons. That here isn't problem of plane design but rather incompetent game designers who add vehicle to game without even thinking through it's proper implementation that makes sense gameplay-wise.

Counter point to the heavy fighter argument: In War Thunder there is, quite literally, zero chance to use them as they were intended to be used. (especially in the case of the German heavy night interceptors) It's like being on a cooking show where you have to make sandwiches and being given a jar of lard as an ingredient. Sure, you could make a lard sandwich, but it won't be very good.

Honestly, I dominated a few air battles with this plane vs other fighters. My personal record is Havoc and Beaufighter oneshoted and 3 fighters killed one by one by defensive cannon (and next two lured to airfield). If you know how to use speed, aim and defensive weapons as offensive, this plane can be nasty suprise, if you know, what to do.

I killed like 2 bombers in it after many failed attempts and just gave up, even fully spaded it was trash. I killed quite a few planes in the ki109 since in comparison it was very nimble.

I remember when I first got the PO-2 I immediately brought it into top tier jets at the time as a joke, but surprisingly got a mixed escort of enemy and friendly planes that were protecting me till I got to my target. I got like half way there (it felt like forever) before getting killed by someone who was not on board with the shenanigan's. It was still heart warming to see enemy and friendly jets trying to stay in the air at my glacial speed.

Trick is to keep speed at 600kph at minimal, long range head-on of hit and run tactic, and try to avoid any damage (it has fatal effect of speed)

I treated it like a mustang (side climb and don’t slow down too much) and I really found it to be a nimble and even punchy with the air target belts but holy hell the stock belts might as well be 7.62mm for how much damage they did. Very fun, love it as a air superiority fighter for mixed games until radar AA becomes a thing

Ran into a Ki-109 while playing Shermans in Ground Sim, guy somehow managed to hit nearly every shot he fired, allied team got wiped by that guy. We eventually won but that guy was a menace to us all.

@@jessymeowlight5660 The duck's gun is actually highly accurate when you get the upgrade module, absolute shit until then if that's what you're basing it on. If you learn to use the scope you can use it to judge distance and hit sniper shots with it. The duck is one of the most dangerous planes in the game in the hands of a player who knows what they're doing if it's left uncontested, trouble is you are incredibly easy to contest being big and very very slow.

It's like a 109 F-2, you can get easy aces if you stick to using your cannon only when it's guaranteed to hit. And by guaranteed I mean absolutely guaranteed. You should be within 400 meters, preferably you take your shot at 200-300.

100 percent agree. I do so well with it. It is so agile that it can outturn almost all late war props because they are so heavy. I frequently win fights against fg1 corsairs, 109 k4, and other props. You do have to worry about the p51 h as it is a powerhouse at its br. Early jets can be easy kills too if they are dumb enough to engage you

Hot take. Ju-87. Why do Stuka pilots have so many babies? Cuz they DONT KNOW HOW TO PULL OUT! Every time I see a Stuka diving, its a 1 way trip. Pancake into the ground next to a tank, and maybe get a kill. Its rare for them to ever pull out of the dive and if they do, they get shot down. I dont even know why they bother having landing gear. Its just useless drag! I dont think any stuka pilot has ever landed anyways.

I can't really put the Ki-109 so high up because it's a good plane for sniping tanks in Ground RB, especially because the bomber platform makes it an incredibly stable plane. It doesn't beat the German duck, not by a long shot, but it actually provides Japan with cannon-armed ground support option.

Yak 15p is op imo. I love it. Just faster yak 3 with better acceleration. Just if you fight against jet engine plane, you fight like a dogfight fighter, if against piston engine plane, just play like energy fighter and that's it

I know you stay away from top tier but I will add a couple to the list. Firstly the absolutely abysmal Harrier Gr1. What to say about that pile of shame? I bought it when it had a 90% discount and STILL regret spending the couple quid on it. Flight performance is frankly embarrassing. Top speed is too low to run from or intercept all the supersonics and transonic airplanes at its BR, the engine is overheating constantly making flying it at 100% for more than a few seconds impossible. Worse of all is its absolutely pathetic turning performance, every jet bomber can out turn the harrier Gr1. I wouldn't be surprised if an F104 has a tighter turn circle than the GR1. The weapons are also a disgrace. The bomb load is very mediocre and will turn the harrier into even more of a sad brick, the rockets are next to useless, the 30mm guns are notoriously mediocre and the SRAAM are arguably the most unreliable missiles in game. They have a range of less than 1.5km, lowest for an IR missile in game and unlike every other missile, when the motor runs out the SRAAM has no fins to keep it flying straight! It is also the easiest missile to flare up there with the r60. Talking about flares, the GR1 gets none! This is in spite of it being one of the hottest airframes at its BR. It also gets no radar, no RWR and forget about long range missiles. Compare this aircraft with the F100 or the F58 Hunter at this BR, both are way faster, way more maneuverable, with better missiles and with countermeasures. Remember it can and will be uptiered to face things like Mig21SMTs. Truly pathetic. The second entry has to be the Horten since the nerf. Aside from being slow as hell, the lack of a rudder really lends itself to be a mega frustrating airplane. Nowhere near as bad as the GR1, you constantly feel like your aim is being sabotaged by the wonky yaw control. Any damage will also cripple your control surfaces. Last entry is the honestly ridiculous Piaggio P.108. No bombs, forward mounted 102mm cannon. Usual problems as the Ki109 but worse. The p.108 is even larger and bulkier, cannot turn and make small adjustments easily and the cannon also points downward, making snipe shots super hard. Only fun ive ever had in it is in custom battles, trying to sink cruisers and ships. Even at that its pretty horrible, by the time you are close enough to take accurate shots, your airplane the size of Nebraska is being chewed by AAA.

Surprised you didn't mention the two OS2U Kingfishers. They were removed from the tech tree (have since been re-added for those that want them) because they weren't good enough at BR 1.0. They are classed in game as bombers, but IRL they were naval reconnaissance planes meaning they have very little armament. They are slow, not that agile and struggle to kill anything more than stationary ground targets.

The Ki-109 is one of my highest scoring planes in the game. In sim battle it absolutely smacks. The gun is amazing with TONS of HE filler and in sims you can really pull back on the stick and OUTTURN a lot of the planes intercepting you. I have hundreds of ground kills and plane kills in it.

personally i believe the british camberra / the american b57 is the worst plane in the game, it's a jet bomber, not so fast, hasn't a good bomb load, and has no turrets, no guns, no flares. it's just impossible to defend yourself, the only thing you can do is bomb one base and die. absolutly horrible

if you dont get a jack and spitfire squad i find the do´s quite usable 4 machinecannons do a lot of dmg, you just HAVE to play this as a cherry picker, not engaging in the big battle but picking off ppl that leave the flock, nearly always 2 hit kill. you die rather fast if seen as mentioned tho.

Fun Fact, the PO-2 is confirmed to have been shot down twice by Japanese troops with Arisakas. Said Arisakas have anti-air sights with slow biplanes being the main target in mid to shoot at. Japanese platoons or squads would line up, ala Linear warfare style, and would shoot at the aircraft with hopes of taking out the engine, or pilot.

I actually really like the vamp but I'm a big fan of Dehavilland so I understand what it's for and how to use it.... It's a jet turnfighter get the bombs, ditch them then use it like a low tier spit. You are so maneuverable that most things don't turn with you.

the Yak and Salamanca have some redeeming qualities, the F40 sabres on the other hand lack any. In my experience they have been consistently worse than even something like the Mig-9L against 9.0 br range enemies

The Dornier 217 are what made me quit playing planes in War Thunder, since then I've been playing tank battles exclusively, I only use planes when I play with the Japanese because it's the only aerial tech tree I managed to unlock to the late war planes.

Personally I think some of the worst planes in War Thunder (That are considered fighters) are the P-47s for their high altitude performance that you'll never be able to achieve and the Fw 190 (Specifically the A models) for it's horrendous turning speed, later C and D models solve the turning speed of the plane to average but some of the A models take a whole 25 seconds to turn around, Spitfires and sometimes Zeros will just dance around this thing like it's nothing, it's engine for most of the A models are not the most impressive aswell as you would find yourself struggling to climb a bit (Unless using the strike Fw 190), in my opinion I find that the Fw 190 (A models) and the P-47 have the same issue in War Thunder, high altitude fighters just don't work in War Thunder matches due to everyone being at low altitude where these heavy fighters absolutely struggle to do well, you can do well with them as they aren't useless, but they're better with teammates around instead of flat out 1V1s or going Doom Slayer mode

Ehh, if you have the energy advantage all the 190s are fantastic, the thing that makes the 190 so great is their fantastic dive characteristic which allows you to boom and zoom relentlessly combined with its good roll speeds that allow you to easily point adjust the boom or bail into the zoom in reaction to what your target is doing, as you are less reliant on pre programming your attacks.

Yak-15P is hands down most fun thing I ever flown in this game (and I literally have all the planes in the game). Plane that requires caution, smart decision making and accurate shooting, since it has only 60 rounds. Key is to bait the enemy to head on,hold fire, do a flyby and then just swing behind the enemy like a Zero. Open fire only within 300m and you will be just fine.

@@Windwalker85 The type 5 has better velocity than the NS-23, and the Kikka actually act like a jet (which makes sense it's not a duct taped yak 3). It's just much better in every way possible, and is actually faster. Manuverability does not mean much, because if you are dogfighting in the yak series, bleeding the little energy edge that you have over superprops like P51 and F8F you are pretty much dead

@@ivan5595 to each his own, I'd still rather fly Yak-15 because of incredibly low stall speed and I can reverse pretty much anything that game throws at me. The only thing I dislike is limited top speed and lack of proper air brake, but as long as you are careful and aware of what is going on around you (which 85% of player base is struggling with and gets clapped exactly because they do not pay attention), you will do just fine in it.

The Yak-15P is actually not just not bad, its excellent. Im not a die hard cult fan, it just is good, simply by virtue of the fact that it's a jet at 6.3. Being a jet instantly gives you a massive advantage against props not only because of the top speed, but because of the acceleration and retention at higher speeds. Sure, if you fly the Yak-15P like a prop you wont do well since its low speed thrust is poor compared to that of most props, but if you abuse your top speed you can crush props. The thing is also exceptionally manoeuvrable at higher speeds and can very easily one turn props that are not careful of you. The ammo is a problem, but mitigable with good aim. It just seems absurd that you put this plane on the list when the ta152c-3 is at the same BR as it

The Ki-109 is only really usable in ground rb, it was really a joke when it was added to the game at 4.7 BR for some reason, that reason is probably because these days its packing 3600 hp at 2.0, it can make multiple passes at 500 kmh and can hit 620 in a dive, it has more pen than most tank cannons at the BR as well at 83mm, enough to reliably roof pen even top tier heavy tanks, once you figure out how to aim the gun and put this on a 2.0 japan tank lineup, its kinda busted, ive gotten multiple 5 kill games with it that way. My favorite part of using it is watching reserve biplanes come at you expecting a free kill and you just gun the wep and leave them in the dust

Fun fact about the P26, pilots in real life also struggled to land it, and it often ended up flipping, killing the pilot. So, to combat this issue, the headrest of the pilot was enlarged (the area behind the cockpit) so that if the plane flipped, the pilot would live.

The vamp was my first jet and I enjoyed it more then then the attacker or meteor in GB though the swift F1 has been a lot better wish it had a radar warning system though

There is 1 defense for the Ki-109: Watching an enemy bomber disintegrate in one shot is *really* funny. That's the only reason I was able to spade that plane, every kill was a big dopamine hit. For the Vampire in your dishonorable mentions I will say, it's a victim of BR being based in win-lose ratios - because many early jet players aren't yet aware of how to dogfight in jets, they get into turnfights, which is the one place where the Vampire outclasses all competition. Of course, having your BR based on the enemy being incompetent is not a recipe for long-term success, hence the Vampire's 8.0 position being a serious curse. Getting a full uptier to 9.0 often means that your Vampire can't even reach the battlefield before the match is already decided.

I have fond memories of the Ki 109. Not because it is good, but because I scored my first A2A sim kills with it against a Pe 8. I don't play sim very much and I am not really good in it, but this is a nice memory. Also I really like the Yak-15p. But that is because I played it in Arcade, where the ripping of wings is not an issue.

But... I love the Ki 109 tbh... For it's tier it's fast enough to keep you relatively safe if you focus on preserving energy and the 75 absolutely deletes tanks. I prefer it to the duck at their own rank it's waaay easier to stay alive just peacefully hauling ass back and forth across the battle.

The plane I hated the most when grinding was the Fircrest, which I was excited to unlock so it could replace the Tempest with 40mm's but got met with maneuverability worse than the BV 238 (yes I bought it before I knew anything about the game) and with how large the wings were it seemed at first the turning would be than displayed on the stat card. Oh how wrong I was. First tried it as an attacker but failed and the tried using it as an interceptor but also failed.
