Why can't i say the same regarding "my first knife?". Well-educated, mid-to-high-level jobs for enough years to now be retired 4 years early. Helped-out family, friends, and strangers, so i invested money in other areas. Oh yeah, those harley's aren't getting any less expensive, are they?! Guess my first knife was a harley. Now, for my first ken onion knife, i'm leaning towards the "ken onion boss hoss" - - not a flipper (i hope) but very smooth! But, need to act soon before they restrict my license. Que malo onda!

As you are aware of the concerns about low RC on M390 blades and all the reviews I have seen have shown the Italian blades RC coming in below 59RC yet Bohler says their steels should all have a RC between 60-62. Are these issues being addressed? I am paying the price for premieum steel, I expect the the heat treat and RC hardness to be done properly.
@tacticalcenter86585 жыл бұрын
They are not fixing it. It also has less to do with hrc and how they do the heat treatment all together. Lionsteel, viper etc use the same heat treatment facility. And it's heat treated for corrosion resistance and not edge retention. 59hrc m390 thats heat treated correctly will out perform s30, s35vn etc at 60hrc. But lionsteel ignored the advice given to them to make that profile. You can read about it on bladeforums.com in the stickied thread of the lionsteel sub section.
@barrylevitt11705 жыл бұрын
@@tacticalcenter8658 Thank you for the information but I will not be purchasing any of their M390 knives. In general M390 has heat treat and RC hardness with most makers, Spyderco seems to be the only one who keeps their RC hardness above 60.
@tacticalcenter86585 жыл бұрын
@@barrylevitt1170 I agree with avoiding them. Spyderco will generally see 58-60 on the smaller blades and 59-62HRC on the larger blades. But the performance at any of those hrc is decent. And extremely excellent at 62.

I recently purchased a Covera and was excited to own my Voxnaes knife and was oh so disappointed when I received it. Besides a dangerously early lock up the greater problem was a piss poor weak ass detent. The blade would barely fully deploy if you slammed it open using wrist action. As a result I had to return it and this is my second MKM that I had to return due to a problem or problems that could have been picked up if only they had some QC in place. I cannot recommend the Colvera in spite of how good looking a knife it is.

these knives are great but Maniago it's not the only place in Italy known for knife production. There is also Scarperia (central Italy) and Frosolone (souther Italy). They are not as good as Maniago in marketing their propducts and communicating and they mainly produce "regional/traditional" knifes but they are worth a search.

I'm italian, a real one not us italian, and still i can't really recommend most italian knives, at least speaking pocket knives. I had various QC and material quality issues both with Viper knives and Lionsteel. Fixed blades on the other hand are great value, the Lionsteel M4 still is one of the best priced m390 fixed blades around.
@tacticalcenter86585 жыл бұрын
Except there m390 performs low for what it should. It can't even perform on par with s30v or s35vn.
@valebliz5 жыл бұрын
@@tacticalcenter8658 not my experience. My m4 outperforms all my s30v/s35vn blades, not the slightest doubt about it. Is it the best m390 blade i own? No. But s35vn is shit, come on. And i wouldn't bash lionsteel for their m390 considering what extremely poorly treated s35vn companies like ZT and CRK put out...

Italian knives have poorly heat treated m390. Don't even bother with those. Also they dry grind the blades meaning they put too much heat into the edge of the blade causing the temper to be ruined and reduce edge retention even more. They do heat treat some steels good. But bladehq just wants your money.
