I have this setup and I like it. have no problems and the filter works well. I've added some filter fiber (to the original filter media) and it works well. I wouldn"t give up on it. The fish seem to like it too! Been doing this since the 1960"s.

Thanks for the share, Tank looks good. I like seeing what's new on the market. Still a fish keeper hobbiest after 20 years. I always have 3 or 4 tanks going. Use the kits to learn what your doing. Letting you know replacing stuff happens and frustrating. Long cords are hard to find. Top fins stuff is ok and some time better. Air driven sponges help your success of creating a healthy space for your fish and lowlight plants. Great job enjoy your fish keeping.

I would probably just spring for a small canister. The 55gal kit has two hoods and each have a cutout, so it’s easy to add another 300gph HOB. With this one (and the 37) with the smaller single cutout, a canister that’s between 200-250 gph would be perfect

Cut it then sand it to round edges if the filter bothers you. I like the wide cut out for the light cord it fits an air tube for the sponge filter, which is a must imo.

I have the same tank. I was able to cut the hood just fine to fit my upgraded filter. Just have to know how to do it and sand paper smooths it all out. Looks great.

I'd swap out that filter for a sponge filter. They're way more efficient and much quieter.

I have a Top Fin 20 kit and I’m already regretting buying it. If the light bar goes out, Petsmart just tells you to buy a whole new kit…because they don’t make anything to replace it. They have a glass lid but all the reviews on that thing say it doesn’t even fit the tanks. My 20 gallon has a removable area so you can upgrade the HOB filter. I’m surprised the 29 gallon doesn’t have that. I was able to toss the kit filter and got a Seachem Tidal 55 which is a lot better than what was there before.

I hate the filter also. I like the tetra filters but with that, the lid doesn't stay on so I'm worried about certain fish jumping out

is the TOP FIN VRS AQUEON TANKs actually different sizes or just the plastic trim RIM is what is a different size .. i am making decorations that fit inside of the tank and i used an AQUEON TANK as my reference size.. can you tell me if the tanks themselves inside glass is the same size ?

my 36 gallon top fin tank i took out the back filter and replaced it with a sponge filter.

I have a Top Fin 55 gallon tank and the Silenstream filter it came with is a real pain in the a**! I have to constantly replace cartridges much more often than I think is necessary. I may end up replacing the Silenstream with a Tetra Whisper EX 70 when I get the chance. Any other suggestions for me?

These kits are not cheap. If you spend a good amount of money on something, you should expect it to be of certain quality.

I have the same set up and i bought a aqueon 50 and it fits nice. Also i bought this off facebook market place does anyone know if the light bars are replaceable there too bright

Thanks for the heads up on the poop (no pun intended) filter! I bet you can just swap out some of the materials in the filter and get a finer mechanical filtration. Would be a lot cheaper than buying a new canopy/filter. For the price and convenience of the kit I think messing with the filtration a bit isn't too bad. I'm getting this kit on the weekend and definitely swapping out the BS filter cartridges for better materials and adding a pre-filter sponge. Cheers mate!

Mine won't even prime properly making me force water through the intake pipe rather than pouring through the top to get it started... going to get an aquaclear 50 instead (should fit). I used a rather dirty substrate for planting and after three days of seachem clarity and filter floss it is still very cloudy!
