My favorite thing about blood bending was that up until that point in the show water bending was set up as an almost wholly defensive and healing force. It was the opposite to the destructive, offensive fire bending, and so we as an audience kind of automatically assigned it as 'good' and fire bending as 'bad'. Showing the horror of blood bending was one of the many ways they broke down that false dichotomy.

Animals bodies are made out of 70% water, so the show isn't wrong you can control blood.
@riakun8 жыл бұрын
Right! And if you think about it, everything has both good AND bad to it, like nothing is really good and evil, just balanced. We also see it with the fire bending when we see the dragons and the true essence of fire bending was shown. It wasn't destruction, it was life. Fire had a life of its own, like when Aang had first gotten his little flame and he smiled and said, "It's like a little heartbeat." That's one of the reason why I love the show so much. Everything has a balance to it, even the elements themselves :)

hahaha nice one :D after finishing the video i said "let's scroll down until someone posting something about cabbage" well that was quick ^^ but like @carlos aponte said it was more than twice if i remember correctly it happend also in some parts of the avatar comic and in the legend of korra there was a reference to him, when his grandson/son said "not my cabbage corp". It basically is a curse that is inherited every new generation. Don't know what scares me more the curse itself or that this man's endless endurance traveling the whole earth kingdom during a war while managing to survive in this politically unstable world after losing more than 4 times his goods. However the biggest mistery is, that he even managed to set up the "cabbage corp". You have my respect cabbage man!

Blood Bending is scary but something surpasses it. It wasn't officially put in the show but after the show (I've read the books) Azula is put in a mental hospital, it's already shown in the show that she had visions of her mother but in the books they had her restrained in a mental institution and was cared for 24/7. What scares me is that she was second in line for the throne if Zuko hadn't been banished. Azula is actually insane, I'm not exaggerating, that's the scariest thing in the avatar universe.

Wise Traveler I do not think that it would be too much of a leap as healers already alter the state of water to heal, I think, naturally and like metal bending it is just an advanced form of bending but the reason it is not common is because it is classed as a taboo and illegal and no one is teaching it unlike metal bending.

#10- That dude was scary. Ozai was terrifying to be sure, but he was PRESENTED as evil. Fong was tired of seeing the men under his command get hurt all the time. He is actually one of the few Avatar villains that actually succeeded in what they were trying to accomplish. #9- Iroh is the best thing about the Fire Nation. All the rest, I can live without. #8- Yeah, that place wasn't so good. The Swampbenders were kind of annoying. #7- Unless they get disconnected (cough*Harmonic Convergence*cough). #6- Don't lie to the guy, (and bring him a book as a gift) and you're good. Oddly enough, interacting with the spirits is an area in which Korra did better than Aang in. Aang lied to Won Shi Tong; Korra beat the crap out of any spirits she came across. At least she was honest in her interactions. #5- You'd better be a master of the Poker face when going to meet this guy. #4- The implications of just what they were doing are massive. Who knows how long they were brainwashing young men and women into being their servants? And what were the long-term effects of the brainwashing? Long Feng was a master-class manipulator, and to me is a bigger threat than Ozai. Feng was using everyone as chess pieces; Ozai just wanted to burn everything to the ground. #3- Oh yes. Azula is another Avatar villain that succeeded in what they wanted to accomplish. The others were Fong & Hama. #2- He's number 2? By the way, Ozai IS actually physically imposing. And he got the beatdown he so RIGHTEOUSLY deserved. Aang stripped him of his power at the HEIGHT of his power. #1- Oh. THAT. I forgot about Bloodbending. And it looked (and was) as creepy as it sounded. It was just as scary 70 years later as it was when it was first introduced.

The Fire Nation GOVERNMENT was scary. I love in Book 3 when they go there and Aang goes to school and sees that the kids there are... just kids. And in the Painted Lady, we see how devastating the war was on Fire Nation citizens, along with how little the government actually cared about its people. And my all time favorite episode was The Beach, where we see a typical teenage house party thrown when the parents are away, followed by some seriously deep and thought provoking revelations of characters' childhoods. It was also the first episode we started to see how really fucked up Azula's mind was and that it actually bothered her that her mother thought she was too much like her father, a man Ursa loathed. Yeah, we knew she was horribly evil, but she's also spoiled so rotten she has no idea how to actually interact with people. She has no social skills and no concept of "friendly competition."

Two things about Avatar I've realized over the year: 1. A running theme in Avatar has been that places the Gaang consider at first as havens (ex: Ba Sing Sai) turn out to be pure nightmares, and places considered perilous (ex: Fire Nation society) have their bright features. Rather than simply allowing flags and elements determine the stereotype, the show brings up the truth that we should look instead at a land's populace. 2. Azula truly isn't that terrifying. Sure, she has great intimidation and persuasion tactics, as well as excellent bending skills... but how many times does she combat completely by herself? Consider EVERY encounter anyone has had with her; she has almost always had the assistance of her military, Dai Li agents, Mai, Ty Lee, Zuko, environmental security, or loopholes (ex: shooting at Katara during her final agni kai with Zuko). That's what makes her tragic breakdown towards the end all the more dramatic. All Azula wants in life is to be loved, appreciated, and connected.

The only two things that scared me were Hama (the whole episode really) and Azula after her final fight vs Zuko/Katara. Hama is obvious- that whole episode was on another level. It seemed like it wasn't even part of the Avatar series.. It was just so dark and ominous overall the whole mood was different. As for Azula, watching her break down and scream during her Agni Kai and in chains was so unnerving. True insanity really scared me, especially as a child. This show perfectly captured her mental breakdown, which frightened me, even nowz

The fire nation was actually based on Japan's dark past which explains why Avatar wasnt as popular there. During world war 2 when Japan invaded other countries, they invaded them in the name of spreading and teaching people their good culture through expanding their nation and influence but in reality, all they wanted were resources as Japan was running low on it due to its rapidly growing population. They treated places they took over just like how the fire nations treated people.
@restreven44556 жыл бұрын
Huh. Didn't know that. I immediately thought it was referring to Great Britain and the western world in general and their past of colonization. And remember when they decided not to conquer China but instead flood it with opium And then started a war because they wanted the sale of illegal drugs to become legal. And I thought Ba Sing Se was China. They eluded capture, the great wall and all, and they are doing better than other places but due to communism and putting down political dissent.

Here's a thought I haven't seen anyone talk about. Firebenders can twist electricity into arcs of lightning. In Avatar, lightning is an uncommon skill takes a certain level of talent, true, but by the time of Korra, Mako is shown on a literal assembly line with a bunch of other lightningbenders doing spot-welding. By this simple fact, along with the omission of anyone explicitly mentioning Mako's firebending as especially good, heavily implies that Mako's level of skill is common. Therefore, there must be benders with far greater power and control. Now, with that in mind, here is a fact of human anatomy: The human brain uses electricity to process information, record memories, and make decisions. A firebender with enough knowledge of the human brain and fine control of lightning could literally control what another person thinks, feels, and chooses in the same way a bloodbender can control the way another person moves. The thing is, with a (for lack of a better term) "mindbender", the puppet doesn't know his strings are getting pulled. Have fun with your new night terrors.
@Egalitariat-likesecretariat8 жыл бұрын
IAKoolaa That's the only way they've shown it on the shows so far (as far I know, still watching Korra). And all it means is that a mindbender would have to get up close to use their power. If you can bend lightning, it can't be too hard to curve lightning.
@bandotaku8 жыл бұрын
I think that would be next to impossible. While a "mindbender" could disrupt the electrical flow in the brain, there is no way they would be able to pinpoint which connections will lead to a certain decision. They can zap a person and hope for the best that they are doing what you want them to, but it will never be precise enough to be effective. With a little brain damage in certain parts of the brain, bender could change a person's personality, but again the result will always be different.

Can't blood bending also be used for medical reasons? Like continuing blood flow after wounded and stuff like that?
@VinVaris8 жыл бұрын
healing waterbending already exists so likely that idea wouldn't be accepted easily
@walterc.dornez76728 жыл бұрын
I would also assume blood bending could be used to keep someone alive, via making their heart continue beating when it should stop

good point. It could be used to keep someone from close death.

I would have to say that the scariest thing in this show, best exemplified with Bloodbending and the Avatar State, would be what humans are capable of when they are forced into a bad enough situation. General Fong is a good case of a person getting close to that bad enough situation. He's fighting a losing war and absolutely has to succeed in some manner, no matter how repulsive the method. The Fire Nation was pressing them hard enough that fighting fire with fire was next to the only option. Meanwhile, Hama had thoroughly been cornered and found a way to fight back that was far subtler than the Avatar State but still tremendously versatile and powerful. The Fire Nation had tormented her enough that she was virtually justified in lashing back and showing that it is not so fun on the receiving end. Sometimes, bad in order to do good. In the cases of Ozai and Azula, if humans are separated enough from the world for whatever reason, such as not understanding others or being forced to excel at the expense of all other things, they are similarly capable of great and terrible things. So when we're placed in a position of such utter distress and disconnection, such as Aang's use of the Avatar State in season 2, episode 1, better hope it's easy to resolve said distress/disconnection or else. I would also like to point out that bloodbending is not inherently a bad thing, something I believe the overall Avatar series did try to at least hint at. Much like with how the Fire Nation was seen as bad while having good people like Iroh and Zuko, it does have the potential for good. We just see it being used to do bad things far more often than for good. And, as mentioned above, it could be a necessary evil, something we need to tolerate in order to deal with the situation. Such as when Katara bloodbent Hama in order to stop her from doing any more damage. Just like how a hammer can be a good or bad tool, depending on who, how, and why someone uses it. Similarly, Fong and Hama represent two sides of the issue of how far someone can go, even when given just cause, before they are considered just as bad. Fong didn't get the chance to go that far but he started out in the right place. Soldiers and civilians were fighting and dying each day on BOTH sides of the line [okay, maybe the Fire Nation didn't lose that many civvies but still, decent people at risk]. They had to end the war decisively and swiftly. The Avatar State, if Aang could control it and be given orders/guidance, would have made one hell of a way to do just that. Sure, he could then have been turned against everyone else or made to do worse but still. Hama, on the other hand, went too far because of her manipulating innocent people using Bloodbending without sufficient cause. She had escaped and returned the favor of her torture on her captors but the villages did nothing to her that I can immediately remember that would warrant such treatment. Plus, she might have been generalizing about people in general but that's argument for another day. In the meantime, peace out.

Lol and this is why I love Avatar! You can talk about just how great and interesting the show is but you can talk about it to whatever depth you want because this show is so ridiculously detailed. and you are a prime example of why I love Avatar Fans!

Naturallychic3 Thanks! I know it's supposed to be a family friendly show and therefore not be as overtly discussing major issues but Avatar does a pretty freaking good job of doing so without being super in our faces about every single thing every single time. Sure it feels a bit like it's just millimeters away from your face and shouting right in your ear from time to time but it's still quality. And again, good analogue for humans in reality because of the things we're capable of doing or being when we need to be. Doesn't matter if it's Legend of Aang or Korra but that's another discussion for another time. And probably a few detailed discussion videos on how people handles things differently, depending on their childhood development and temperaments. [because I can't help it, Aang was raised to respect and value all life, not take it, and to be a spiritually open person by the Air Nomads. Korra was much freer and more physical, much like the Southern Water Tribe she was born into.]

+Lord of the Cutting Moon You're welcome! and that's what makes it a great show. It is a show that kids can enjoy and when they grow up (basically become us) and rewatch the show, they will see the complex themes and details of the show and be able to appreciate it again! The Avatar TLA and LOK really are works of art.

Koh should've made it as number 2. He really freaked me out as a kid. Especially since I used to watch Inuyasha as a kid (which I wasn't supposed to since it wasn't a kid's show) and I remember there being a demon very similar looking to Koh that also freaked me out.

One pretty creepy / scary scene for me was the moment when aang took ozai's bending away. Ozai had a pretty creepy face when aang touched his head, also, when they shot this light from their heads in this T shape, it was pretty creepy because of the sound as well. Then, when the giant turtle started talking in this weird tone, saying stuff like "corrupted" in a weird way, made me kinda scared. And at the end, when aang was becoming red, and it showed his face in this screaming expression, I was really freaked out.

Hell yeah! Especially if you're given the ability to waterbend with just your mind *(Whether or not you can bloodbend with the moon is a different question all together, but not unwelcome)*, and then put into the the first shows time period, instead of Korra's time. Personally speaking, I wouldn't have that many issues with taking control of people and watching from the shadows as I make them slaughter their comrades, friends and possible lovers. And afterwards, why not harvest their liquids to use later? It's not like they're going to need it.
