Our Louvre Museum Tour starts with the Great Sphinx of Tanis, often called the Guardian of the Louvre. We then stay in the Egyptian Gallery to see Pacheri, the Louvre’s Mummy. After admiring Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People, we visit Ancient Babylon and examine the Code of Hammurabi.
Then it’s over to number six on our list, David’s The Coronation of Napoleon before admiring Michelangelo’s Dying Slave and Rebellious Slave. Number four is Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa, followed by an Ancient Greek double whammy with the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. Finally, of course, our number one entry is da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

If you do go to see the Mona Lisa and feel cheated by having to queue up for ages in a mob of people waving phones just for a few seconds in front of it, then at least you have the consolation prize of getting to see Veronese's The Wedding at Cana. It's on the other side of the room from Mona Lisa and is one of the most epic paintings on earth. It's almost unbelievably huge and absolutely crammed with fascinating details.

Went there last year. I didn’t mind the line to wait for the Mona Lisa, in fact in less than 10 mins I was already in front and spent nearly 8-10 mins just observing and gazing at it. With no issue at all. And as an artist it was just as magical as you would think

The first time we were in le Louvre was in 1987 and at that time the Mona Lisa was encased in a bulletproof glass and hermetically sealed cabinet all on her own. There was no line-ups or crowds whatsoever when we were there when the museum opened on that day. We saw her again in 2017 and it was just as your video showed but before they implemented the cue line. She is remarkable to see but we prefer our visit to her in 1987.

Great video! You have a new subscriber. It’s important to note that Théodore Géricault’s “Raft of the Medusa” is one of the first paintings to portray an African/Black person as the hero. Théodore Géricault’s views on slavery were well known and his painting projected his abolitionist views. By the way, he’s buried Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris. I just visited his tomb today. Definitely worth a visit.

Wow. I would so love to see those 'Lamassu' from Mesopotamia, at The Louvre in person, and now I have, via you. So happy that you showed them while taking us along on your tour of The Louvre. I have always been fascinated by ancient History and Mesopotamia is one of the most fascinating of all. Also, The Code of Hammurabi is a very interesting object and tells us much about the values and morals of the ancient people of Mesopotamia. History is extremely exciting to me and it seems, to you too. Keep on keeping on, Jessica, and thank you for taking us all along on your tour of The Louvre. Can't wait to see more.

What is interesting in this code of laws, one of the oldest law texts ever found and one of the best documented, is the fact that Moses was inspired by it (not to say that he plagiarized). 😮 The famous phrase "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" belongs to Hammurabi, and not to Moses, as was believed. However, there is an important difference between the same phrase in Hammurabi's code, and the one in Moses' code. In Hammurabi's code there are differences according to social rank. 😢 For the same mistake, a person from a lower social class, was punished more severely than a person of high rank. Moses, on the other hand, is much more democratic.👌 The meaning that the same phrase has in the code of Moses is "just an eye for an eye..." 👏 Moses, the most important Jewish prophet traditionally credited with writing the Torah, lived in 13th century BCE, about 450 years after Hammurabi. In almost half a millennium, humanity has evolved a bit... 😉 "just an eye for an eye", and no more 😁. Kidding or not, it's a colossal difference in thinking. It is not the only statue, many others were created and spread all over the kingdom.
@cortrichards8179
@cortrichards8179 Жыл бұрын
@@art-tour That is quite interesting, Ramona. It seems that a lot of the information found in the Christian bible, can be traced back to the Mesopotamian civilization, and I do find that quite intriguing. I have to wonder if those who wrote the Christian bible, DID actually plagiarize most of it from this earlier civilization after all? It would make logical sense, I suppose. Hmmmm.......definitely something I will want to look at closer, and decide for myself. Thanks for the reply and all the best to you and yours!

@@TheMuseumGuide I just subscribed today and already watched this one, The British Museum one and am about to watch a third. I studied art history as my minor, had a long career as an opera singer which allowed me to visit museums all over Europe. I lived in Cleveland, Boston, NYC & Berlin. Never the less, it's impossible to see & experience even a third of a collection no matter how many revisits one makes. I've been to the British Museum many times and first learned about the Iffay Heads only recently (although the Benin Bronzes and Nefertiti etc are well known thefts. Side note: one year ago today, in 104° degree heat, I braved that heatwave burning my feet through sturdy shoes & although I took the bus most of the way (which I would have normally walked), walked from the bus over in the shade ducking into stores to cool off en route to the BM, only to arrive to mass Bedlam everywhere. At the entrance, I was told they had shut down the museum bc of the heat. Massive amounts of tourists & tour busses were stranded... I flew out the next day so missed that visit. For years, the Germans justified their thefts *because* , they bragged, they had not been caught!?! So any deep dive you have to offer, I'll be here for watching it! Thanking you in advance!

The character seen in the famous portrait at the Louvre is not that of Lisa del Giocondo or Mona Lisa, but that of Isabelle d'Aragon and Sforza, the daughter of the King of Naples Alphonse II d'Aragon. Isabelle married her cousin Gian Galeazzo Sforza, the heir to the Duchy of Milan, to consolidate the ties between the Kingdom of Naples and the Duchy of Milan. So, it is the portrait of a princess and not a commoner. Leonardo da Vinci was at that time in the service of Ludovico Sforza, the uncle of Gian Galeazzo who exercised regency at the court of Milan. Isabelle's young husband disappeared prematurely at the age of 25 without being able to exercise power, allegedly assassinated on the orders of his uncle. German historian Maike Vogt-Luerssen tells us that after her widowhood, Isabelle and Leonardo formed a secret couple and had 5 children. Therefore, it was his beloved's portrait that Leonardo da Vinci painted, which explains why he took it to Amboise in France and kept it until the end of his life, like keeping a family photo nowadays. There was thus an emotional connection with Isabelle that did not exist with Lisa del Giocondo, whose portrait was only a commission. The research I myself have done on the landscape indicates that it is based on an authentic location, which would confirm Maike Vogt-Luerssen's theory, as it undoubtedly pays homage to Isabelle d'Aragon's family origins. It seems obvious to me that the identity of the character in this portrait has been confused between an actually received commission, that of the silk merchant's wife, and the portrait of Leonardo's partner, which is the one seen today at the Louvre. All of this is probably now well known to the so-called specialists of Leonardo da Vinci, who do not want to acknowledge the inconsistencies of the official version because they have spent their entire lives defending a version they now know to be outdated. As Mark Twain said, "It is easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled." www.kleio.org/de/geschichte/renaissance/monalisa/ml_fakten/ www.equinoxmagazine.fr/2021/11/28/la-joconde-serait-catalane/On

@@TheMuseumGuide Thank you for your response, but before deciding whether to agree with the theory I am presenting to you, it would be necessary to take the time to calmly and in detail observe the arguments provided by the historian Maike Vogt-Luerssen regarding the true identity of the character as well as my reasoning concerning the landscape.

Egyptians ignored the brain during mummification, because they thought the organ was unimportant. Senient thought was performed in the heart, their proof being that when you had a shocking event you felt weird feelings in your chest. The logic was carried on by the Greeks and thence to the Romans. That is why we still associate feelings to the heart today. "She died of a broken heart." "I didn't have the heart to do it." etc etc etc.

There is actually a recently recognised condition called 'Broken Heart Syndrome' where some people under extreme stress or grief experience symptoms similar to heart problems prior to an attack. I had it myself when my partner died. I did not know it was a recognised medical thing at the time and only found out when I was googling trying to find out whether I needed a doc or not. So the ancients may have known more than we did, even if their reasoning was a little skewiff. As for the brain; I was led to believe they extracted it through the nose with a kind of straw! I always wondered about How you would do that, so this makes more sense.

@@hogwashmcturnip8930 Not overrated at all. To paint the Mona Lisa, Da Vinci used a technique called sfumato that blurs all the details in her face. That's why her smile is elusive. Da Vinci realized that our brain completes the information gaps when we see the blurred smile. It is a cognitive faculty that was discovered by scientists centuries later. To appreciate the Mona Lisa, you also need to understand the symbolism. She represents the human figure as a microcosm, or, conversely, the cosmos as a human figure, which was a new idea of the Renaissance, instead of a dual universe including a supernatural realm. This is why her hair looks like the waves in the river, the fold in her dress look like the hills in the landscape, etc, etc. The Mona Lisa is a unique masterpiece and no other painting compares to her, even if you don't like her.

I would have replaced the Coronation with the Lacemaker by Vermeer. It is not just another Vermeer, it is the best, even in the poor state of preservation it is in. The composition is simple and powerful with all the lines converging at the center of the lace knitting work, including the gaze of the lacemaker. She is totally focused in her work, apparently. But if you follow the thread she is knitting, obviously symbolizing the thread of her thoughts, the thread goes over the book she is reading that is probably the bible, which is what a chaste young lady should read. But then the thread goes further and reaches a pillow and at that point, the white thread is mixed with a red thread and this mixture obviously symbolizes sex and it looks like fireworks. It is so subtle and so beautiful.
