In this video, I hike a tough route up into the mountains of the Carneddau range with Simon, a bloke in the woods. Together we head out into the mountains of the Carneddau range for an epic hike up and across the Carnedd Llewelyn range. Strong winds, a bit of rain, and over 20 km of hiking through this rugged landscape.
Ok, so it might not be the "toughest" in North Wales, but it was definitely a tough go and was at least the toughest hike I had done in North Wales.
We arrived to Snowdonia in North Wales the night before and had a good campout for an early start to our hike.
For years Simon and I have been in contact through KZbin comments, Instagram and the odd email. We're both two guys from the other side of the pond who have done a lot of similar things, travelled to Australia, built our own canoes, other woodwork, bushcraft and camping. It was great to finally have an opportunity to connect in person and share a bit of time in the outdoors, camp and go for a hike.

I'm a local fell runner and that's a favourite route of mine, beautiful area and some of my favourite summit names around there too, remember we have more vowels than English so W and Y are vowels in Welsh too!

Carneddau is one of a range of mountains that run north to south, is located east of the A5 London to Holyhead. West of the A5 through Ogwen Valley, runs another range called the Glyders, the Snowdon range next in the row to the west.

I'm yet to visit Snowdonia National Park, but after watching your video, I can't wait to go! I recently did Scafell Pike in the Lake District with my 6 year old and next on our list is Snowdon.

Awesome, and yeah it's an incredible place. I'd like to get back to explore more. Your 6 yr old must be a champ, it's not easy hiking.

Fun trick: lay a de-labelled and clear two litre bottle half-full of water on its side on the summit and look along the water surface to see Scafell Pike well below eye-level, then climb Scafell Pike and use the same trick to see Carnedd Llewelyn well below eye-level too. Earth curvature! You _can_ see it, once you have the reference. Lugging a set of pipes up there to build a water level three metres long and taking actual measurements to calculate the radius is entirely optional.

The last time I was hiking in Snowdonia was in 1998, adventure training with the British Army, camping in a little orange canvas A frame tent. There was low cloud, poor visibilty and sideways rain. I remember a long ascent onto Mount Snowdon, no queues though……..It is really good to see you have a lovely hike, ridgelines with great views. Great filming in tricky terrain.

Wow, Jason, those views were so beautiful. And those narrow trails along the ridge lines were amazing! It must have been a great trip, not having to worry about exactly where you are and where you are going. You can really take it all in when you have a guide like Simon. It's obvious how much you both enjoyed the experience. Well done!! ☮️❤️😎

Welshman here. I was born below those mountains. I know you were joking, but there's more vowels in Welsh, than English. It's just that the pronunciation of the letters of the Alphabet is different. For example, the letter "Y" is a vowel in Welsh. Its also pronounced differently depending on what's in front of it.

Man alive, that was spectacular to watch 👍. I'm glad you didn't come a cropper whilst manoeuvring the uneven terrain with one hand while filming. It was weird seeing wild sheep up so high but glad there wasn't a Mexican standoff like the Spanish cattle 😁. Good on you.

Thanks, yeah there were a few steps that I was a bit weary of but worth it. A great hike. Wouldn't that have been something if one of the sheep had a go at me too 😂 I think that would have been a message from a higher power for sure!
