The magic in those skinny cords and thin straps is that the better ones are not made out of nylon. They are Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene (UHMWPE), which is basically generic Kevlar. That's why it is so crazy strong. This is your best ruck vid so far. Nice.

Good morning Grunt 😊. Having been a 0311 but not combat. And now I am disabled and 61 years old and can't do what I wanted to do. I became very good at UL backpacking. And you know everything adds up quickly. My thinking is shelter I use 3 different things while backpacking. A firm believer in a UL tent keeping bugs away I use a Terra Nova laser ultra 1 tent 18 ounces or Terra Nova solar competition 28 ounce though heavier it can be set with 3 stakes. So I will normally bring a sub 6 ounce hammock and a tarp I have several but if I don't care about the weight as much it would be my killer SJK Satellite tarp shelter system 12ftx10ft it's heavy and big but the Snake skin camo is great comes with 10 stakes and guide lines packed weight 2 lbs combined with the ENO sub 6 hammock with just that you have a shelter system you can sit in the hammock cook take a quick break ECT and you can actually put 4 people in it and gear at least to keep you dry . So that's my options I like from super UL as possible to big tarp . Packs well my go to is a Zpack Ark hall pack in a dark gray with extra lumbar padding and large zip pocket I use on the chest strap. Sleep system Zpack 10 degree XL quilt 900 filled down, Thermal rest x light pad or military close cell pad . I guess this is what you call the big 3 places to drop your weight as much as possible. But Jar Head Grunt like to bring the heavy crap .😊

I'm a retired 2531 with bad knees and rheumatoid. After active duty I learned to go ultralight. But still well over 50 pounds counting plates, rifle and ammo. So I went native. Take some courses in primitive skills. Knowledge weighs nothing. Learn how to get what you need from the land and so drop whole pounds off of your pack weight. If cold weather gear and water are weighing you down then move to Florida, where it never gets cold and there's plenty of fresh water laying around. Strategic relocation is the ultimate prep. "Backpackers" can refer to lots of different type folks. If you're referring to thru-hikers, they mainly stick to well worn and used trails that rarely see dangerous predatory animals. Then factor the individual states they're hiking through where they may not legally be able to carry a gun, especially trails like the AT where you could be going through multiple states with differing laws. Personally, for me, if I can't have my gun, I don't go. And I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything special.

I've liked everything I've gotten from Forclaz/Decathlon we enough (except for the fly on pants which only go down half as far as they should). Been trying to get another of the Hunter shirts you did a review on but they've pulled it from the US site but still have it on the UK site (or it looks like the same anyway) but won't let me order it. For packs I'm still quite happy with my Granite Gear Chief. Plenty of room, can carry 100lbs if I want/need it to, weighs about 7lbs empty and is the most comfortable pack I've worn (even compared to others I have like Osprey or even with 100lbs...as comfy as that much weight can be anyway). More options are always welcome to pick what suits a given persons needs best though. Glad we have the ability to shop around for that instead of being forced to use whatever brass decided was a good idea or gave them kickbacks.

Should've rattle canned your blue jeans too - ha! Good review and good points to this 'ultralight' pack but at Bidenflation prices I'll stick with ALICE w/enhanced shoulder straps (large - 56L, med - 34L) and the medium MOLLE ruck (49L) - I like them and can't carry much more than they hold anyway (these days). I do like the space the frame creates between the pack and your back - most external frame packs do that but are more cumbersome for activities besides hiking. The Decathlon looks pretty good and has features I like but can't swing the $190 for 'another' pack (although that's very reasonable for UL packs).👍

Having a huge pack is not always good, you tend to fill it up! Next thing you know your weekend backpack trip is 70 pounds 🤣🤣🤣. Beer weighs a lot... I found the best way to carry my handgun while wearing a pack is a crossdraw. I have a large scarf thing, apparently an issue item, coyote brown like two feet by 4 feet or more. Works good to hang around my neck but it also drapes nicely across the butt of the gun, you'd walk by me and never know. I like that pack. Kind of like guns and knives, I have plenty so do I NEED one more? 😂

Does a woman NEED another pair of shoes? We all collect sometimes just because we have to have that thing. I'd estimate my total # of packs around a couple dozen. WHY? Same reason I have a few guns... because I can.

My thoughts, as well. These modern packs use large, padded hip belts that don’t work with a belt kit. Back to a micro chest rig? That won’t work either because that’s where my Super Red Hawk or G20 rides. 🤷

Drop leg platform. Or find a pack with a seat belt that has MOLLE or something similar and use the actual seat belt as a pistol belt, with QD holster for when dropping the ruck. I like my Voodoo brand pack because of that. Maybe hide a CCW in a dump pouch rigged up below your waist? I've recently rediscovered the gas mask bag. Mine is a vertical opening European surplus canvas gas mask bag. It straps on my left hip like any other gas mask bag, and I use it on my motorcycle when needing extra capacity. When I don't need it, it rolls up out of the way very compactly and I store it in an outside pocket in my rucksack. It occupies the same space as a low-hanging messenger/laptop bag, but with the added benefit of it not getting in the way of the rucksack harness or rifle sling, as it straps around the waist and around the thigh

@@Minuteman_Expeditions-wo2cpanything that hangs down below the belt and swings around or is strapped to the legs is an immediate no-go for me. Not comfortable on longer trips at all.

Two, 30 litre British army large compression sacks weigh only 700g and are already covered in 1 inch webbing straps to attach to stuff. They're PU coated and waterproof. Configure a H pattern yoke in backpack style with the shoulder straps connected directly to bottom corners of the sacks rather than the battle belt. Weave the sack straps through each other and the molle back panel of the yoke. Attach top corners of the sacks to yoke shoulders with short utility straps. Make sure the battle belt is nice and high over your belly button. Once loaded, the sacks will sit on the rear belt pouches and transfer their weight onto your hips without the need for a pack frame. British 58 pattern kidney pouches are ideal and (usually) molle compatible. I took inspiration from how the British Virtus system attaches the assault pack to the yoke and also how ultralight 'trashbag' packs are just stuff sacks with carry straps. Still need to field test but looks to be workable.

I have never served, but I am a backpacker and an old fart now. Over the years, I have scaled down what I carry. I would say a majority of backpackers conceal carry as there are some bizarre people out on the trail. This decathlon forclaz is lighter than my old kelty redwing 50 as it's a thicker fabric. The non-closing side pocket is a what-were-they-thinking design. The expandable 10L storage up top is very nice and ONLY 2.9 pounds.

Somehow I knew it was going to be a Forclaz backpack. To be honest an ultralight gaf would crap their pants and probably die if they had to carry 35 lbs of weight on their back. On top of that the ultralight community caters to people who are 5'6" emaciated vegans. I have a couple of ultralight sleeping bags that fit me (they were hard to fine.) I'm worried about tearing them apart if I use them. You got to love it though. Flimsy gear, that won't last, and costs you a spare kidney. Only in America.

Can't believe that I geek out over backpacks now hahah It's funny how the firearms are just one tool of the prepared citizen, and you must explore the whole thought process of putting kit together to be a properly prepared citizen. Obviously, nothing happens without security being first, but after that Water, Food, Shelter, Medical, Commo, mobility, sustainment (s?)! Always more to learn about! Thank you, Grunts!
