I love the story about how you told Roman historians, no, that's not a wig, that's sewn hair. And then did it, just to prove it.

Her hair is awesome! It's just like mine. Everyone loves my hair...until they live in the same house with me. First they see what a freak show I am after waking up in the am. Scary! Then they see my hair brush which looks like I have never cleaned it....but I do almost everyday. Next come the drain issues in the shower. As time goes on they will find my hair interwoven into the fabric of their clothing. I honestly have no idea how I have hair on my head at this point in my life. Drying my hair or waiting for it to dry can take all day and if it doesnt dry properly it may smell a little funky. Oh yeah and there was this one time when my mom thought using hair relaxer on me could help calm my hair down. Its usually used for more ethnic hair and no one involved had ever used it on a caucasian head. It burned my scalp but it did smooth my hair some for a couple of days then some of it starting getting kinky again and some stayed smooth. I wore a french braid the entire school year. Thanks to my mom and her friends and their horrible idea. The cool thing about having hair like this is when I straighten it which I rarely do because I do not want to encourage any more frizz or breakage, it looks several inches longer. The best part of having this type of hair is I always have a conversation starter. It's a blessing and a curse I guess.

Watching your videos gave me help in styling barbie hair without having to use bulky, out of scale hair ties. Sewing doll hair was so much easier, and some of your styles on this channel gave me ideas for exactly how to style their hair.

I love watching these videos, especially in the evening. It's almost like meditation. Very soothing. It also remins me of watching my grandmother braiding her long black hair and securing it to the top of her head. She always wore it on top! Thank you!

I recently used a combination of several of your Roman styles to dress the hair of a Romano-Celtic Queen for her coronation in the SCA. I'd like to share the photos with you if you'd like to see them. She looked stupendous! Are you on Facebook in a professional capacity? Thanks for the amazing tutorials, I look forward to each new video you put out!

I am obsessed with your channel. I appreciate the cited references at the ends of your videos. I have so many questions! Did you study historic clothing and hair at College/University? Is this your profession? Do you do this for theater or a place with historical recreations?

Thank you! I was a theater major in college and have studied costume history (for fun) my whole life. I am a licensed salon professional for my day job and I occasionally design hair and wigs for local theater productions. cheers! J

I have seen this around for years but I never actually knew how it was done but I did know that it was sewn and kind of assumed that each plait was sewn individually in a spiral to form the shape, seeing it done in two panels was mind blowing and now I really want to try it.

All your hairstyles are so beautiful! I am curious (since sewn hair is completely unfamiliar to me), you never tie off the thread before clipping it. What keeps it from gradually coming loose? I know this is probably a silly question, but I can't help asking.

How often did they wash their hair and btw you did a great job with the colors in the background, like Pomeii, and I love the music. I wonder with so much thread in the hair how difficult it would be to untangle it and wash it. So much work to look pretty, but I guess beauty is pain. Lol
@genli56033 жыл бұрын
Never with soap. It's alkaline and would destroy your hair. Cleaning was primarily done by combing at the scalp and washing the comb, unless they decided for some reason to use pee, which can work without ruining your hair.

Hero - I know your comment is really old, but there are women who give themselves sewn in weaves. This means carefully braiding all of the natural hair very tightly, then sewing on the longer extensions evenly and smoothly, all on ones own head. I figure if people can learn to do that, they could learn to do this to themselves! When I had long hair, I could all kinds of crazy French braids and buns with no help, so I’m guessing with one or two modern tools (mostly clips for holding sections while working), I could have pulled off something close to this.

I love your videos! How should this be done with extremely long hair? I have knee length....should I make 4 braids and wrap them into a loop instead of joining two shorter sections? that seems appropriate, right?
@SeerWalker8 жыл бұрын
my hair is slightly shorter but I was considering the same thing. the only thing I'm not too sure about is the fact that it would then probably be a bit unsymetrical, though that may not bother you. if done the way shown in the video, I suppose you could just wrap the ends along the inside until there's no more, though that may make it quite thick. I don't know haha
@MrsBrit18 жыл бұрын
I suppose another option would be to do 4 braids and see two together and wrap them as shown, but one side at a time, and then stack them? That sounds more complicated, though....lol
@MrsBrit18 жыл бұрын
Sew....come on, auto correct.
@MissPalim8 жыл бұрын
+MrsBrit1 I thought of maybe doing the 2 sections of 4 (or more) braids each as shown in the video - and then instead of sewing the braids togehter to form a panel you could braid the braids. A 4-, 5- or more-strand braid looks a bit different but quite interesting, plus it reduces the lenght of the braids to wrap around the head

My hair is butt-legth and a bit thinner and I wanted to try it out and I spent two and a half hours braiding and sewing...
@Venefica828 жыл бұрын
I wonder if this would work for near ankle length hair as well, the panels would need to be laid trouble though.

Given how much time women in antiquity (and up until the industrial revolution!) spent spinning thread, and the amount of work that went into creating it, I would think that using thread and then discarding it each day would also be a sign of conspicuous consumption.
@genli56033 жыл бұрын
No. That much thread is the work of a few seconds.
@eeejay2356 жыл бұрын
Is there a variant of this for this day and age? Not sure how to get the "panel of braids" together, may be with bobby pins?

With all the work & time involved with dressing the ladies hair in these intricate styles were they wrapping their hair for overnight & wearing it for a couple/few days like ladies did back in the 50's & 60's? I can't imagine they had their hairdresser put it up in the morning then take it down for bed only to get up in the morning & go through the same process again- they'd never get anything done before noon!!
@KGibbs-pe4ed4 жыл бұрын
in the paper that janet wrote on this hair method, she does have a section that mentions it was likely that the hairstyles were worn and slept in for a couple days at a time like you said, because sewing the hair like this is soft and comfortable enough to sleep in!
