OPB, Oregon field guide has a wonderful episode about how the Army Corps of engineers really screwed up on this one by building the North jetty.

This video does not mention that the made made jetty caused a redirection of ocean current that caused this whole disaster. This kind of thing doesn't happen in a short time span. This beach had old growth trees that were 500+ years old. This kind of redirection of sand and land due to ocean current changes does not happen by coincidence in such a short span of time. It was man made disaster. A disaster by engineers who did not fully understand that changing the landscape of the shore by creating a jetty could cause such cataclysmic results. I grew up in this town and this disaster happened before I was born. My father took me to the bay ocean beach many times and there was a muddy hill side that was eroding, Every time we went to that beach I saw that muddy hill side, I didn't think much about it, There were also many sun bleached logs that I didn't know the origin of As a young boy, I just thought it was the norm for any beach. I didn't know that those logs came from the forest that existed before the change of landscape. Over the span of decades that hill that I walked past over so many beach expeditions with my father eventually eroded to a smooth volcanic shelf. The typical volcanic rock face smoothed out by rain and waves over millions of years. But these cliffs were buried under clay and mud for thousands of years and the clay and mud was eroded in a very short timespan relative to geographical events. After seeing the eroding landscape over the years and watching the documentaries I started to connect the dots. The change in geography and landscape is still ongoing. It's not a distant thing of the past that only exists in an obscure youtube documentary. It's a total destruction of coastal land. I am not blaming the engineers for this. They were ignorant ( I assume) of this kind of ocean current land dynamic. This man made disaster is still having an impact on the land. This Documentary fails to mention the important fact that the mad made jetty construction changed the entire landscape and ocean current of the region. You may live 100 miles in land but with enough destruction of the natural landscape even your home can be eroded by the ocean given enough time. Nobody is safe from a giant body of water if people don't correctly manage the landscape.

Heh, that's what is going to happen to Tillamook and other coastal cities in coming years.
