No, the reason why they did a joint development with BMW is because it’s too expensive to make a new Supra from scratch and it’s not worth the money. Car companies aren’t making profit from car enthusiasts anymore. This was probably the most reasonable solution they had. I was skeptical, test drove one. It was great. BMW have made some amazing cars, assisted in others (McClaren F1). Also why did they partner? To keep the inline 6 turbo, and hedge the cost on a low production car. In NA about 7k Supras were sold compared to 400k rav4 a year.

When the mk4 came out Toyota was already seeing a massive downward trend in sports car sales that began with the last three years of the mk3. By that point Toyota had already invested into the design of the mk4 and factory's were already getting prepared for its 1993 debut. So rather than pump them off the assembly line in rapid order such as what was done for the previous generation they scaled back their material investments with the understanding that they would be selling a lot less Supra's and a lot more Previa's as that was where the real sales were. If Mr. Toyoda himself wasn't running the company at the time the mk4 Supra probably wouldn't have been sold in North America at all, potentially ending LHD production entirely maybe a year or two before the mk3 production ceased. Building sports cars hasn't been a profitable venture for most large companies as well as smaller ones like Nissan who have recently been talking about pulling the plug on future GTR's, pending how sales go with the Z35 (not well...). Toyota is only selling mk5 Supra's to prop up their brand image, because if they make that then maybe some of its bloodline will leak into the GR86 and Corolla GR...right? IMO Toyota hasn't sold a real sports car since the mk2 Supra, Nissan hasn't had one since their S110 and S12 Silvia's or the early 260Z, Mazda's 1st gen RX7 and Mitsubishi hasn't made a real sports car since the Evo 3. Ford's RS200 and Subaru's version 3 STi impreza. Everything since then has had way too many power options, gimmicks and useless gadgets to try and make a bad driver feel like a less bad driver lol

Why would Toyota team up with bmw? Because Toyota wanted the Supra to be a i6 and they wanted to stay away from super car price range. Toyota stop making i6 and the cost to build a new engine from scratch will increase the price for a low volume car. BMW currently makes some of the best i6 so Toyota took the b58 engine and revised it to meet their standards. That’s why the b58 besides gen 3 is one of bmw most reliable engine. The gr Supra is affordable to alot of consumers thanks to bmw giving parts and spending money to build the chassis
