Well done Hocker. Was happy to see Kerr and Nuguse outperform Jakob. Disappointed Kerr didn't win. But he was in great spirits afterwards, which cheered me up. Amazing time from the first 3, especially Hocker. Really not all that far off El Guerrouj's world record, all things considered.

If Jakob has pacers and wavelights, he's unbeatable. Unfortunately you don't get either of those at the Olympics or World Championships. Which is why Jakob lost in Eugene in 22, Budapest in 23 and now Paris in 24.

Decades ago, the last great middle distance rivalry was Seb Coe and Steve Ovett and can remember they concentrated on each other to such a degree in the 1978 European 800m final that East Germany's Olaf Bayer beat them both. Not as bad as doing it in an Olympics but they learned the hard way and never took the rest of the field for granted again.

After hearing Kerr speak sensibly today about the Paris final, and seeing what a good time Cole and Yared were having, I've concluded that what Jakob is missing in his training is developing a sense of humor. Not that Kerr's is on display that much, but I sensed there's a guy in there that has some proportion on this absurd business of running races and what it means in the scheme of things. Jakob was kind of jinxed growing up in the household he found himself in, where according to him, "winning was the only thing that mattered." I wonder now whether with a young child and another disappointment at a championship final, he might develop some depth, so that he can learn to laugh at himself a little.

I'm a Brit and very patriotic, but Kerr has a long way to go to match Ingebritsen's achievements, as does Crocker, and all his other rivals. The way Jakob easily won the 5000m was simply majestic. So perhaps Kerr should dial down on the cockiness until he's got more to be cocky about.

@@archiejames4739sure he will be eyeing the Olympics but he could do the euros .. and he certainly dodged Jakob at the end of last season in diamond league races. @@kd-wk8nd Jakob is definitely the more ‘complete’ athlete, but not the most complete 1500 runner and that’s shown and I think will continue to purely from the type of training he does. In terms of dodging, ye Kerr didn’t race him but (all respect to Jakob for being able to do this) winning the worlds and then continuing to be in top race form after mentally must be incredibly difficult and in my opinion pointless. And the euros again is a rlly weird one, had 16,000 viewers on the bbc tonight, stadium looked well over half empty, sponsors who are sustaining this sport rlly wouldn’t want an athlete to travel from west America to Europe 2 months out from the most important event in 4 (3 cause of covid) years. Being honest without knowing anything I thought Kerr was “winning” this rivalry but the more I look at it Jakob is winning. Jakob has the Olympic gold medals and he is always racing all year long, meanwhile Kerr only races a few races a year on top form. Yeah my eyes been opened, Kerr is the bigger choker.

Jakob also has the World Records for 2k, 3K and 2miles (also the 1.5k indoors). That's 4 world records 💀 And he seems to be still improving this year. (He also has yet to start going for bigger distances... he probably will shine more in 5k, 10K and half marathon once he focus on that in a few years. Which is absolutely insane since again.... he already has 4 WR.

I love how much attention Kerr has spent making this a rivalry. He has lost almost every race against Jakob, and while he did win the last two, which is commendable, it just feels as if it’s way to early to say that this is a proper rivalry. Hopefully Jakob can be a bit more graceful in defeat (although he is doing his interviews in a second language), perhaps Kerr could learn to be a little graceful in victory.

I think whats happening is that Kerr and Ingebrigtsen are much more evenly matched then as shown by the racing history so far. The only reason kerr was struggling to match ingebrigtsen in the earlier years is because at the time Kerr had just completed college, and was only beginning to start his pro training, whereas jakob had been training pro since he was 17. In the future to come this rivalry will definitely become way more interesting, and the 2028 olympics as of now imo is very up in the air as to who will come out on top.

The 2028 Olympics will most likely be won by the likes of Niels Laros now at 19 years of age, Hobbs Kessler at 21 or Cameron Myers at 18 (or some Kenyan phenom who comes out of nowhere as they often do). It's rare to repeat in the 15 at global level and even more so in Olympic cycles.

I would like to agree with your assessment overall. And nice video that you put together. Just to reiterate some of the things that you said at the end that I tend to agree with. Obviously Josh has a couple of very nice races in recent history I still believe Jakob is better and he also wasn’t in peak form last race. You could argue the last two races because he said that he had a sore throat. That’s up to anyone whether they believe that or not. But I think pretty much anyone should believe that he probably should not have been peak shape for this last race after being injured for eight months. So I would say it’s pretty incredible that he still wasn’t very far off.

It always feels worth mentioning to me, that it many of these races, Jakob is in fact the pacemaker. At 2023 worlds he lead most of the race, he is certainly doing the brunt of the work, and still performing very well, and Kerr is completely ignoring that in all of his comments. Josh Kerr lets everybody else do all the work and then kicks the last 200, which while a successful race style, is arguably not as difficult as what Jakob likes to do, which is race out front. Granted at the Bowerman Mile, Kerr did take it with 600 to go, which was an excellent move.

I mean, if they're there to race then the better runner is the one with the better strategy, not the one who paces the most. @@katy3901 Certainly, he does incredibly well when someone else or himself in some cases takes it out very fast, but you are right in your previous comment, if the pace is inconsistent he struggles a lot more. He has a worse sprint than Kerr (and in Hindsight, Hocker and Nuguse too), so his best bet was to try to tire them out to reduce their sprint power or create a gap before they reach sprinting distance. Fact is, Ingebrigsten was just weaker than his 1500m competitors that day and lost. His strategy may seem like a bad one, but the result would likely have been the same if he had taken it easier. Because he's on a different cycle to Jakob. Kerr has done plenty of high profile races. Since winning at Budapest, Josh has ran in the 5th Avenue Mile, did a half-marathon in San Diego, did the 2 mile at Millrose, did the 3000m at World Indoors, and the Mile at the Pre Classic. Ducking PEDs my ass. He'll be at British trials in the 800m and probably do a 1500m/mile before the olympics. Honestly this is just bizarre hatred and shows your lack of knowledge. Jakob has went for obscurer rarely ran records too. He literally went out to set the 2-mile outdoor/outright world record at a Diamond League meet last year! Jakob is the one that's ducked meets according to your logic - he didn't go world indoors! There's a 1500m at Monaco and a week later there's a mile at London. I bet both duck each other.
