After hearing Kerr speak sensibly today about the Paris final, and seeing what a good time Cole and Yared were having, I've concluded that what Jakob is missing in his training is developing a sense of humor. Not that Kerr's is on display that much, but I sensed there's a guy in there that has some proportion on this absurd business of running races and what it means in the scheme of things. Jakob was kind of jinxed growing up in the household he found himself in, where according to him, "winning was the only thing that mattered." I wonder now whether with a young child and another disappointment at a championship final, he might develop some depth, so that he can learn to laugh at himself a little.

I would like to agree with your assessment overall. And nice video that you put together. Just to reiterate some of the things that you said at the end that I tend to agree with. Obviously Josh has a couple of very nice races in recent history I still believe Jakob is better and he also wasn’t in peak form last race. You could argue the last two races because he said that he had a sore throat. That’s up to anyone whether they believe that or not. But I think pretty much anyone should believe that he probably should not have been peak shape for this last race after being injured for eight months. So I would say it’s pretty incredible that he still wasn’t very far off.

It always feels worth mentioning to me, that it many of these races, Jakob is in fact the pacemaker. At 2023 worlds he lead most of the race, he is certainly doing the brunt of the work, and still performing very well, and Kerr is completely ignoring that in all of his comments. Josh Kerr lets everybody else do all the work and then kicks the last 200, which while a successful race style, is arguably not as difficult as what Jakob likes to do, which is race out front. Granted at the Bowerman Mile, Kerr did take it with 600 to go, which was an excellent move.
@katy39015 ай бұрын
I mean, if they're there to race then the better runner is the one with the better strategy, not the one who paces the most. Jakob knows he's fast when the pace is more consistent, but he's not the best finisher. He needs to put more light between himself and the rest of the field in the first half if he wants to get close in Paris.
@katy39015 ай бұрын
Your comment is interesting, though, because Jakob seems to struggle much more in the races without other pacers.
@bituminouscole5 ай бұрын
@@katy3901 Certainly, he does incredibly well when someone else or himself in some cases takes it out very fast, but you are right in your previous comment, if the pace is inconsistent he struggles a lot more. Unfortunately for him most of his competition, Kerr, Wightman, Hocker, Neguse, and others all do better in a more tactical scenario and have a better kick than Jakob. Jakob is certainly a better 5k runner than those men, but they are all true 1500m specialists whereas Jakob probably isn't, he is just so aerobically strong that he does well anyway

Jakob had an interesting strategy for the Olympics which was to gas himself setting the pace for 90% only for the fresher runners to overtake him on the final straight. Not sure why he thought that was a good strategy but it did allow for the winner to set an Olympic record!
@soundninja993 ай бұрын
He has a worse sprint than Kerr (and in Hindsight, Hocker and Nuguse too), so his best bet was to try to tire them out to reduce their sprint power or create a gap before they reach sprinting distance. Fact is, Ingebrigsten was just weaker than his 1500m competitors that day and lost. His strategy may seem like a bad one, but the result would likely have been the same if he had taken it easier. Hopefully for him, he can redeem himself with a 5k gold
@gyorkshire2573 ай бұрын
@@soundninja99 I disagree, if he'd gone a bit slower he'd have got a medal, probably silver behind Kerr. His strategy was alright, but he executed wrongly by burning off too fast. At the minute he's just not good enough over 1500m to beat Kerr. Kerr shouldn't have followed him as closely, then he'd probably have had enough in his legs to hold the gold from Hocker.

@@gyorkshire257 that's a fair point actually, but in hindsight. He underestimated Hocker and Nuguse which is understandable because most people did. If it was a real rivalry Kerr wouldve shown up at the European championships but he was too busy cycling PEDs, how is he going to be "in shape" for the Olympics if he takes part in the Euros?... meanwhile Jakob is diving over the line in the diamond league and taking the European crown.... Plus Kerr keeps going after obscure rarely run records like 2 mile 1 mile etc rather than making any real interest like matching Jakobs 1500 times
@shaun__35 ай бұрын
Because he's on a different cycle to Jakob. Kerr has done plenty of high profile races. Since winning at Budapest, Josh has ran in the 5th Avenue Mile, did a half-marathon in San Diego, did the 2 mile at Millrose, did the 3000m at World Indoors, and the Mile at the Pre Classic. Ducking PEDs my ass. He'll be at British trials in the 800m and probably do a 1500m/mile before the olympics. Honestly this is just bizarre hatred and shows your lack of knowledge. Jakob has went for obscurer rarely ran records too. He literally went out to set the 2-mile outdoor/outright world record at a Diamond League meet last year! Jakob is the one that's ducked meets according to your logic - he didn't go world indoors! There's a 1500m at Monaco and a week later there's a mile at London. I bet both duck each other. Josh could go for his home crowd in London and I bet Jakob goes to Monaco.
