If there's one Vic High Country video you watch this year - it's gotta be this one! Shaun Whale and Graham Cahill hit the best 4x4 tracks in the Victorian High Country in search of pubs, snow, campsites and more. The snow was insane, but the tracks they had to drive to get there were absolutely frightening.

BailezzzMC my bet is he put it in gear put his foot down on the accelerator pedal and the Ute moved forward. Just messing around. As long as you keep your momentum going through water your bow wave will be pushing the water away from your vehicle and you probably won’t get water sucked into the air box. I probably wouldn’t make crossing deep water without a snorkel a regular occurrence but.

Weird how the snow affects the wheeling in Canada and then in Australia, saw a video of two guys in gladiators on 40's just plowing through snow, while it seems the snow bogs so much more down under. Permafrost I guess?
@JoeBlow-ub1us
@JoeBlow-ub1us 6 ай бұрын
@@charles2057 Nah I would bet some money that its not a permafrost problem. My best guess is that it warms up in the day, causing the snow to melt and then later in the evening, it gets colder again so the melted or half melted snow turns into ice and then more snow falls on top. Happens all the time in early winter where I live. Graham was saying this was the biggest snow fall in 2 decades and during the night it was only -5 - -8 so thats roughly 20F, which really isn't too cold

I love how excited Aussies get in snow. It's like it's some magical pixie dust that turns you guys into little kids at Christmas... to stop your doors freezing shut, spray the seals with silicone. And if the door locks freeze, heat up the key with a lighter. These tips brought to you from the deep south of NZ.

Replace "Aussies" with Queenslanders there mate. For Victorians snow is almost as common as NZ, at least on the north island. I literally had snow days at high school. Our ski resorts are bigger than NZ and way more people ski and board. I know, I lived in Queenstown for a while. You're kiwi mate, you should know the difference. We're not all the same.

I live in Canada, I used to 4wd from November til April every year lol… specially in the fall during hunting season, I remember one day my old man and I were about 3 km in the woods on foot during a whitetail dear hunt, and once it started snowing, the deer bed down. So we start hiking out with our pop up blind, gear for the day and everything else we brought. By the time we got back to the Zuk, there was 25 cm of snow down, and the we needed 4 Low to get down the track we were on BEFORE it snowed. Took me close to 3 hours to get 2 km from the Parking spot in the end of an apple orchard, to the paved road, which still had 25-30 cm of snow down on it. Mind you, you we were 45 -50 km out of town, so we still had to drive the remaining 43-48 km in 4wd. And this was in late October, a storm no one expected. Also, went driving around down in 45 cm of snow in the Zuk, in 4wd of course, but that’s life in Canada…. Now admittedly, the heat you boys deal with in oz would make me puke any day. As for camping in the snow, until you’ve built a wind break for your fire, and a a camp/bed out of logs/spruce bows, you haven’t camped in the now!

Used to live in Southern California. Did a lot of desert 4-wheeling and also the local mountains as well as up in the Sierra Nevada. One afternoon, while driving out in Anza Borrego, and climbing up Oriflamme Canyon into the mountains, we were engulfed by a surprise snowstorm. Got 6" (15cm) in about 1/2 hour. With decent tires, traction in snow is surprisingly good. Better than some of the loose rocks and shale we were expecting to climb up. As well as providing decent grip, the snow packs in around the rocks and then fills in for the tires to roll over more smoothly. I'm sure the next day, after it had partially melted and re-frozen, it was a much different story though. The gent driving that Ford truck was probably having a much easier time as it appeared that he was carrying a LOT less gear than you other blokes were! Coming from a back-packing and bicycle touring family, we camped in our 4x4's with a lot less gear. Of course, you are looking to be a lot more comfortable... I'd bet there's a happy medium in there somewhere! Man, I would love to get back to OZ and do some exploring with you all.... It's been about 35 years since I was there and I loved the place. Love your vids and especially the 'guy' stuff you exhibit in your pranks and general camraderie. Keep it up!

Drove up Mt Ruapehu in the North Island of NZ in a 910 Bluebird wagon. You know, the 2-litre old rustbuckets. 380000km on the clock, and still going strong. RWD, with chains on. On the way back down, got a bollocking from Mountain Patrol for having the chains on the wrong axle. "What are you talking about?", sez I. "Don't you know that all Nissans are front wheel drive?". "Figure it out, bro - I'm on the way back down, in a car covered in snow". Guy wouldn't believe it, and wanted to ticket me. I just drove away, back to the chain hire place, and had them taken back off. They couldn't beiieve it either. Experts. Gotta love 'em. Miss that car. Wonder where Mr Smartarse ended up - probably had his chains on his own wrong axle...

We got 28 inches of snow (.7 meters) just a few weeks ago here in New Hampshire, USA. Puts a smile on my face watching Aussies get all excited about it haha. Snow wheeling is fun, but with very little traction you definitely need to adjust your expectations for what is possible.
