He never played for Notts County. He became a professional with Scunthorpe United. I should know because I played with him for Scunthorpe Reserves under Jackie Marriott our Reserve team coach. Why can’t people get their facts right.

Born in Skegness, Lincolnshire, Clemence played eight matches on trial for Notts County, but was ultimately not signed by the Meadow Lane club.[11] He was spotted by Scunthorpe United whilst playing in a county-cup final at their Old Showground ground for his local youth club Skegness Cosmos. After starring in the Cosmos' 4-3 victory,[12] Clemence was invited for formal trials with "The Iron", which he duly passed.[13] Clemence went on to sign professional terms for Scunthorpe on his 17th birthday, 5 August 1965, shortly before the start of Scunthorpe's 1965-66 Third Division campaign.[13]

I was fortunate to meet Ray Clemence at Skegness Butlins in 1975. During the closed season, the football coaching had a current player come and coach the kids. I was there for weeks and the previous week, Paul Reaney of Leeds United did a session. We played a game, I scored a top corner left foot from 18 yards past him. I was 12, and it will always stick in my mind because he was such a kind and honest man. He also had a great sense of humour. We were having a question and answer session with him and the coach, who himself was a Skegness born professional, Calvin Palmer. There was a cable car above, and Ray Clemence was fighting Peter Shilton for England’s no1 position. These kids, recognising him from their aerial vantage point shouted “Peter Shilton….England's no1!” Ray Clemence shouted back “There’s only one, Peter Shilton!” He signed my Mitre (white) trainers, but the ink rubbed off eventually. It’s one of my (minor) claims to fame….scoring past the England keeper, when I was 12! I was really saddened to hear of his death in 2020, because he was a hero of mine, even though he played for Liverpool and not Newcastle (my team). That era of footballer were better human beings than the majority of current footballers who believe their own hype. Humility and kindness seem to be missing in the players of today. You just have watch Mbappé’s disgraceful interview after stealing the CL game against Newcastle to see the worst type of human in action. Ray Clemence was a gentleman, and Liverpool, football and the World is a poorer place for his loss.

Best ‘keeper I ever saw, and unbelievably quick too. He was the fastest player on Liverpool’s books, helping to make him so effective as a ‘sweeper-keeper’ behind the Reds high defensive line. I had a close-up view of his pace when he played on the left wing in the 2nd half of Peter Thompson’s testimonial at Bolton. Poor Los Thommo would have to beat his full back three times to get from the half-way line, he had slowed so much, but Clem was just a blur when he went out there! Amazing ‘keeper, and amazing man. He went to more World Cups than any other England ‘keeper, if it ever comes up in a quiz. He probably never played in one either, but was there in the squad or later as the goal-keeping coach. Liverpool have had and still do have some really top draw ‘keepers, but he is still the best for me 🙂

Thanks Spurs! I became your fan when I saw Clemence playing for Tottenham Hotspur. I can¨t recall who was the opposite but there was a corner kick he saved (The Moment) but there was a hand that led to a penaltykick which he mistook as somersault. Anyone to correct me?

It must be a bot narrating , Clemence or Clemonce ? Brilliant keeper I thought he was a better keeper than Shilton and should have had many more England caps .

Shilton was the best a natural athlete and drove a jag He did some courting in that jag . He had more spring in his step. Hunter made the worse mistake against Poland when Shilton had no chance saving that shot against Poland when it went under his body .. Clemence would never have got near that ball Yes Shilton was the best,,,

I never understood it. He was never in the same league as Jennings, Shilton, Banks etc, just was lucky to have played in an incredible Liverpool era where he didn't have to do an awful lot. How he replaced Shilton in the England team for a period, is one of the great mysteries.

I’m a spurs fan .Long before he joined my club I was at a FA cup replay at White Hart Lane against that great 70s Liverpool side. Liverpool won 1-0 with a Steve Highway goal. Clemence made save after save to keep that lead in one of the finest goalkeeping displays I have ever seen.
