I grew up in Burns Lake before the trail network was built and back then we used to ride all horse trails in the area. The next time you are in town and if youre up for some fun and fast single track, hit up some of the local guys and they will be more than happy to show you some of these old classics. Now I live in Victoria and I ride the Heartland trail network. Thanks for the great review on my quirky little town!

I did something very similar to this last night, but the only consequence was some mud and smelly water. Sequence was like this: I remembered ahead on the trail was a part where you might fall into a gross looking muddy creek. I LOLed to my self thinking about people falling in, because it is not challenging really. Then thought about Karma happening because I was laughing about it. psyched myself out when I got there, couldn't between lines - ended going the only bad line then panic braked, weight way to far forwarde, sent myself slow motion OTB into the grossness -- possible lessons? If your wondering how you could possibly mess something up, it means your about to. Instead, always look down the trail and ride with confidence or don't ride at all. If your thinking about the ways you could mess up as you come up on it, might as well get off and walk it or back and try again.

Time to consider working out-lifting weights can help with skeletal protection as well as give you more ability to maneuver your bike (or jump off of it) exactly how you'd need to in any situation. Like others have said, get some stout elbow/forearm pads that'll allow you to avoid having your hands absorb the initial shock of the fall
@assoverteakettle3 жыл бұрын
With the amount of pounds of pressure in a fall, I don't think lifting weights is going to help with protecting naturally weak areas like finger joints and wrists. Worst thing to do going over the bars is to reach your hands out and pancake. Unfortunately that's a natural reaction but can lead to broken wrists. The better thing is to learn to tuck your head down and roll out of the crash. Even if you're going to pancake roll out of it to dissipate the force. I know. Easier said than done. What someone also needs to do is create wrist guards like rollerbladers use, and mountain biking gloves are pretty flimsy and obsolete for the type of riding people do these days. Someone needs to invent better gloves. Something closer to dirt biking gloves maybe with webbing in between the fingers to prevent hyperextension.

Nice, but I doubt they put my small town of Rossland to shame with our 300km of trails. Of course we have twice the population and have been building mtb trails for about 30 years. But awesome to see you explore new trail networks. There's so much more than Whistler for BC mountain biking. And every area has its own flavour of trails depending on geography and the local trail builders.

Then you'll learn some stuff about not over-braking. Thank me in hospital! (and get road bike handle bars)

We literally just stayed in Burns Lake a couple weeks ago. Three days exploring the trail network left us with a pretty good idea of what they had to offer. A LOT of work done by a committed group of volunteers! Great facility and some good trails. Sadly, your review of Hogzilla is very deceiving and untrue. Sure it’s a long, machine built jump trail with drops and jumps of all shapes and sizes….. but it’s exactly that: all shapes and sizes. The HUGE miss on this trail which is the difference of an OK trail and a great trail, is the consistency of jump lips and timing of obstacles based on trail speed. Hogzilla is a trail that took a ton of machine time and volunteer work/love, but sadly the finished product missed the mark by a long shot. No two jump transitions are the same, things don’t grow according to trail speed, berms are inconsistent and gaps of jumps are dangerously inconsistent. So you saying it rivals jump trails at resorts is horrifically inaccurate. Trails like Title Line and Walk The Line at Silver Star, Steam Shovel and Bermalade at Sun Peaks and A-Line/Dirt Merchant at Whistler are so many levels above Hogzilla it’s not even comparable. Again, the Burns Lake trail network is amazing and ran by an amazing group of people. Hogzilla just doesn’t ride the way you describe it in this video and it’s not fair to your subscribers to say it does.

I understand the benefits of having a low front end in certain situations, but as an old school, lower mainland downhiller I find the geo on most new bike's puts the front end way too low for riding steeps comfortably and 'safely' imho, especially for taller riders! A 40-50mm riser solved that over the bar feeling for me. Yes I have to weight my front end a little differently, but I'll take that small adjustment any day over feeling like all my weight is pushed forward on to the bars every time things get a little gravity orientated ;) Less wrist fatigue too!

I have done years of judo as a kid, and each time I see people fall I'm like: why are you moving like that, it's going to make the impact so much worse! No really, as with lots of other sports where there is a risk of fall injury, I would advice people to just go take some judo classes. You'll be thrown around in the air so often it will feel like second nature to control your body position and posture / movement while landing, especially since you'll be thrown by someone not aiming to mame you but to teach you that control ( and confidence ). A couple of classes imho surely beats the time spend on injury recovery, and tbh it's can also be great fun on it's own. Ofc, the issue then becomes that you suddenly have a bike to content with in the air, so I guess separation is something you need to learn the hard way.. most serious injuries I seen have been because people couldn't separate and got a limb stuck due to the bike. Practicing bailing mid jump feels like such a waste of a good time actually landing the jump not to mention trashing your bike... maybe a cheap but capable klunker?
