one gendery moment in spongebob i always think about is in that episode about the drink hat, where mr krabs tells spongebob the hat makes him look like a girl and spongebob is like "am i a pretty girl? 🥺" its just a throwaway gag tho so i understand it not being included lol

For all we know he knew Patrick wasn't a woman the whole time, and was taking advantage of everyone else not knowing to get away with openly flirting whilst still looking straight And only reacted disgusted once Patrick revealed himself as male in order to publicly maintain the appearance of being hetro :') Honestly he's shown basically 0 interest in women or men before or since so I could see either way But I like that you're super confident he's not into women Makes me laugh that so many people saw him and immediately thought "likes men" :')

Sometimes I remember that Some Like it Hot came out in 1959 and still had a way better punchline to the cross dressing reveal. Osgood falling in love with Jerry, finding out Jerry is a man and just shrugging and saying "Well, nobody's perfect!" IN 1959, EVEN THEY had a better punchline than "EW YUCKIE"

pleakley is an interesting one. my memory is foggy but i dont remember pleakleys gender presentation ever being presented in a mean spirited way. i dont doubt im forgetting a point where it was likely played for laughs, which isnt great, but for the most part that was just... how he was. they were? idk. all i can recall is that the impression i was left with as a child was wholly positive, which is more than you can say for most media concerning any form of gender fluidity at the time.

I wouldn't even blame the ugly parts because that's just what Flapjack is as a show. It takes place in a creepy dock town with a lot of grumpy, cranky sailors and wood and metal structures rotted by decades of saltwater and rain. If anything that whole episode just shows that the show has a heart in the middle of its creepy atmosphere, just like its protagonist. For Mr. Krabs tho to me it actually seems like even after it was revealed to be Patrick he was still open to being attracted to Pat were he theoretically a trans woman because even after seeing it's Pat, Krabs isn't even put off, just asking for clarification towards Pat's gender, which to me seems like if Pat did in fact say like "yeah I'm a woman now" then Krabs would be into him which is actually kinda based

An enby nostalgia shows from my childhood is Avatar: The Last Airbender, because there is this overarching message that traits like physical stregnth, grace, empathy, and being blunt or being vulnerable aren't gendered. That there is no "right way" to be a certain gender, because not only are gender roles culturally/socially defined, but what makes you the gender you are is personally defined, no one can make you be something or someone you aren't in a way that just isn't true to you. And the best of the best at anything are always those who can balance themselves, having traits that are both "masculine" and "feminine", and are honest with themselves about themselves. I never saw even a full episode of the Legend of Korra so idk about that show tho.

You know, maybe that's just a me thing, but I always read the Mr Crabs: "So, let me get this straight. You're not a woman?" line a bit different. He doesn't ask Patrick/Patricia if they are a "real" woman. I know genitals are a bit, well, not existent in the Spongebob Universe but given the words he says and the face he makes, he doesnt seem to have an issue with Patricks body, as long as they were some form of woman. So by just saying "a woman", it's implied that, had Patricia been a trans woman, Crabs would have been fine with it. But since Patrick was and is male, he's got issues. As in, the thought of having been attracted to a man was just the worst. Making this not a transphobic moment but rather a homophobic one.

Guess Who is the one we're currently on, but she watches pretty much every adaptation. It does seem like the older ones play it up more for laughs, but the newer ones seem to have a running theme that Scooby enjoys wearing wigs and women's clothes, that he really likes how he looks in the wig and no one in the gang looks at him any differently. But again, I'm just watching it here and there, so I'd love to hear your deep dive.

There’s another more modern episode of Spongebob that has a plot line similar to this, but instead with Plankton disguised as a girl florist to attempt to try and get the secret formula. It’s Season 13s episode titled “Flowerpot”, he genuinely thinks about leaving his life of crime to container being this florist, the entire time I watched the episode I was thinking “omg her egg cracked”. I appreciate Lily's videos especially on kids media so much bc it really shows just how ingrained into our society casual transphobia is. It can get kinda heavy when you realize just how deep it goes, but I think this work is really necessary and provides specific examples of how we are literally programmed to be transphobic.

But that doesn't mean these episodes are bad since none of them are saying that transgenders are bad. Why are people overanalyzing these shows? An episode of a show is not automatically transphobic just because they SEEM to have subtle, unintentional, transphobic-like stuff in it!
@sagemcmichael8320
@sagemcmichael8320 11 ай бұрын
I didn't say these episodes were bad or transphobic, I was saying there is casual transphobia in them. There's a big difference between something having casual transphobia in it vs it being intentionally transphobic. Often times the casual transphobia being something along the lines of "haha man in a dress." This is a deep rooted cultural trope that has been in countless movies, shows, songs, you name it. This may not be explicitly saying that they don't believe trans women are women, but it plays into really old harmful stereotypes, and older versions of this trope were often about what we would today refer to as trans people. Lily isn't overanalyzing an episode of spongebob, she's pointing out these tropes that are a part of a larger cultural narrative that says trans people are "the other" and are therefore objects of ridicule, disgust, fetishization, etc. Just because a piece of media may not be intentionally maliciously transphobic, even the casual transphobia adds to the cultural narrative
@william3100
@william3100 11 ай бұрын
@sagemcmichael8320 at the same time, though, it's a comedy show, and comedy shows make fun of everybody regardless of gender or transgender in this case. The episode wasn't even about being transgender in any real way. It was about Patrick disguising himself as a woman to avoid getting kicked out of town(in his mind). There's a difference between being a transgender and pretending to be a different person who just so happens to be the opposite sex. Squidward and Mr. Krabs were more upset that they were hitting on Patrick rather than a transgender.
@sagemcmichael8320
@sagemcmichael8320 11 ай бұрын
Like I said, I don't believe the writers of this episode were being intentionally transphobic, so I really don't understand getting so defensive about it. But the joke of the episode relied on the audience recognizing this "man in a dress" trope and finding it funny bc we are conditioned to. It's like how we culturally recognize the trope of a student giving a red apple to a teacher. It's not something that's explicitly taught to us as kids as normal, but it's a thing that's been depicted hundreds of times in all sorts of media so when we see that we immediately recognize it as a normal thing. The reason why the man in a dress trope is transphobic is bc, while this is an old established trope, it's only a much more recent thing to actually regularly see characters explicitly referred to as trans. The trope relies on visual signifiers to let the audience know that the "man in the dress" either is queer, and that's funny, or they or men who are attracted to them are afraid of appearing queer, which is also funny. Even if the "man in the dress" character is not actually trans, bc of the history of the trope, the audience is conditioned to see that and perceive some form or queerness happening and to find it funny. Why is it funny? Bc queer ppl are "not normal." That's what the whole joke boils down to.
@william3100
@william3100 11 ай бұрын
@sagemcmichael8320 No, the joke is, it's funny because the characters actually believe Patrick is a woman. Not exactly saying that Patrick being a woman is bad, just that the disguise is actually working. Nothing trans about it.

Man, the Trans woman in Barbie passes so well... that was such good casting, lol! Because every time some Conservative goes "There's a secret Trans woman in this movie!" anyone who doesn't know is just like "....... Wait..... which one....? It's one of these three people? Okay.... who???" Really ruins the whole 'we can always tell' narrative when you think about it. Good movie, good representation, and broke boxoffice records while being the wokest film of the year. God, the Barbie movie was such a home run!

yeah and i was also really glad that they never made any implications that the _character_ she played was also trans. that might sound weird when we all want explicit trans representation, but it means she's just a barbie, the same as all the other barbies, the only thing that makes her different or special is that she's a doctor. whether she's trans or cis is completely irrelevant to the fact that she is a woman, and i think that's great.

I feel like they could have done something interesting with the idea that men are only nice to women they want to sleep with, and had Patricia turn a guy down only for him to treat her worse than they ever treated Patrick, but they missed every mark this episode.

honestly I love the overanalysing of the lore and I love the longer videos. I think you should do your videos however you feel they should be done

PLEASE talk about the seaosn 2 character “Lake” from infinity train! Their story is actually trans coded and it’s really well written! You do NOT need to watch seaosn 1 at all, each season is a different story, and the season is only 10 epsiodes, 10 minutes each.

These aren't really canon/directly alluded to in some instances, but I would love to see you potentially do a video on some popular trans headcanons from shows. I don't think I can name one specific episode from one, but there are a few headcanons/trans theories from a few years ago that you can find "evidence" or discussions about. Some include Dipper Pines, Danny Phantom, Lars from Steven Universe, or Marco Diaz from Star vs the forces of evil, etc. The last one is most interesting imo bc there was a lot of setup for possible mtf trans Marco (even a scrapped storyboard that included a trans flag dress). Unfortunately they never put the idea into fruition by the end of the show.

Well, I like the tangents and lore, but at least we have Alex Bale for our SpongeBob conspiracies 😂

22:10: If the Krusty Krab has an HR department, it's probably just Mr. Krabs wearing a mustache or something. If the HR manager intervenes, it probably won't be to help Patricia.

I'm actually surprised that Spongebob handed the "man in a dress" trope better than "Friendship is Magic"

I can’t believe you have to explain this how you did in the beginning. Get with the program guys. We have always had to ~find~ ourselves in media. We are hardly ever welcomed there.
