In todays video I wanted to share my upcoming plans with you all. As you will have seen in the thumbnail, my big trip this year is going to be a return to America, where I will ride the TransAmerica trail, which is a 4205 mile route that runs from one side of the country to the other. Other than the direction of travel, the other major difference between the TransAmerica trail and the GDMBR which I completed last year is that the TransAm is mostly road or gravel riding, as opposed to the more challenging terrain I faced on the GDMBR last year. I am planning to ride the TransAm from July to September 2024.
Before the TransAmerica ride later in the year I am planning to head into Europe in my new campervan towards the end of this month. I have no real plans for this trip, but that is by design, as I want to see how I enjoy the freedom of just going where I want, when I want. I will take my Kona and hiking/camping gear, so plan to travel around from place to place, riding or hiking interesting trails, perhaps doing some overnight trips, but I will have very little in the way of set plans when I set off, all I know is that I have up to 2 months free, and I will see how I go.
Thank you for watching this video, if you would like to follow along with these trips (and more) that I will be doing this year then please subscribe.
One last thing, in case anyone missed last weeks video I have also started a review channel which I have linked below.

Mat, first off my name is John but posting on my wife's email (not a tech guy). In 2022 at 57 took time off from work and rode the Trans Am. Not exaggeration that it was greatest experience of my life for many reasons. I live in NY and rode solo east to west. Took about two months and didn't feel I rushed it. I passed through many parts of US I had never been and met many incredible people. Pure Americana and best way to see the country. Last year I rode the Pacific Coast Trail which was very different but equally spectacular. Put it on the dream list. Kona will be perfect for the ride. I was jealous but so happy watching your GDMBR video as I missed that special blissful place that only a long bike journey can get you to. You'll be back there my friend on the Trans Am and looking forward to following your journey. P.S. I've been eyeing the GDMBR for last two years and your great video provided finally push I needed and plan is for it in 2025.

Hi John. I was debating between the TransAm and the Bikenonstop and I think you might have helped me make a decision. I think the TransAm is the way to go. Thanks. It's good to hear that the Kona will do the job. I hope you make it out on the GDMBR in 2025. It's an incredible route. I will be happy if the TransAm is anything like as good. Good luck out there. Cheers 👍

Mat: I’ve been enjoying following your travelogue on the GDMBR and now as you prepare for the Transamerica on your Kona Sutra. I help administer the Kona Sutra Owners and Fans group on Facebook and we would love to have you join the group. Our (+/-) 900 members all over the world would not only enjoy your pragmatic and wry approach to touring but may also provide a valuable technical and logistics resource for your travels. I’ll be posting a link to your KZbin channel on our feed so others can enjoy (and presumably subscribe to) your content. Safe travels! Hope to see you in the neighborhood soon!

I don’t know if this detour would be doable or not but the longest rail trail in North America goes from basically Kansas City to St Louis. It’s called the Katy Trail and one GREAT incentive to add this to your tour, the trail passes through wine country and there are 21 wineries, breweries and distilleries ON THE TRAIL 😊

Your perspective about longer trips being more appealing resonates with me. I don't like day rides all that much, short trips are ok as training rides for longer events, but long journeys are really what I want to do. Haven't been on the bike in 3 months, although that will have to change soon before I head to the GDMBR! 😂

I did the Southern Tour in year 2000. Not as long as TransAm think it was 3200 odd miles in the end. Did it late September to early December. Went from 80-90 degrees heat up to 102 in Phoenix Arizona. Also went down to close to freezing when we got to Florida. Memories, Monarch butterfly migration going on in Texas, like leaves fluttering past, tarantula moving around in daylight, swallows in groups on the road in Florida trying to keep warm from heat off roads. Long dead straight roads, 15 miles long. Texas rained every day we cycled across. Folks told us thanks for bringing rain! Up early to beat the heat, mostly on road around 6.30-7am.Emory Pass at 8500 odd feet, highest point on trip. Its a wonderful country to cycle across. Envy you for going. As you know, its not getting from A to B, but what happens between the two points that you will always remember. Look forward to following byou again..

Hi Mat - I've been meaning to write a note to you and this video has prompted me to. I watched your GDMBR series pretty much in one sitting - I loved it ! It's inspired me to do the route myself and I'm now planned for July 2025. Thanks for the inspiration. Last year I did the Dalton Highway to Valdez - which was pretty tough for an 56 year old bugger like me. Looking for something easier this year so a month ride up the east coast of Australia is booked in. I live in NZ, and can really recommend it as a lovely place to bike. I've cycled a lot of it. Reach out if you decide to come here - happy to have you stay. I live in the South Island. Cheers Ben

I was going to cycle the transam in ‘22 but when looking at the map I ended up chosing my own C2C route from Golden Gate Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge and hit a number of other sights, like Big Sur, Death Valley, Grand Canyon. Utah is something really special to ride through. The were still plenty of rail trails including Cowboy Trail, High Tressle Trail, Erie Canal Trail and Empire State Trail. Purely sharing as food for thought

Hello Mat, I am about to collect my Titanium Broken Road bicycle in a month and I am wondering why you don't plan to go with that bicycle to do the TransAm? I did the TransAm as a part of a bigger trip in 2008. My first long (6 months) trip on a (recumbent) bicycle. A great trip which was followed by one other in 2014 (6 months) from Prudhoe Bay to Panama City. This one also on my recumbent. Next year I will use my new bicycle; Broken Road, to do the GDMBR. Thank you for the TIP of this great bicycle I am about to collect. You'll love the TransAm very much, although it will be totally different than the GDMBR! I will follow and catch up with several beautiful memories!

There are some epic rides here in British Columbia! You had a taste of it early in the GDMBR, riding through Sparwood. So many trails criss-cross the province, and you can go long stretches completely off paved roads. Your GDMBR ride inspired me to get geared up for bikepacking. So when you do come to BC on a future adventure, we can meet up at some spectacular ocean-side spot and share stories over some, uh, herbal tea(?).

Hi Mat, Ive watched your GDMBR start to finish probably 6 times. very enjoyable. Im a long time mountain bike rider and racer but have never bike packed, after watching your journey on the GDMBR it looks like something id like to do after i retire in a couple years. I really enjoy how you take the time to go through your gear and explain how it works. Im in the prosess of buying my gear, I have several bikes but i think i need a mountain bike built more for what you rode. Anyway i was hoping to meet up with you during the start of you TransAmerica ride somewhere in Oregon, i would lov to visit with you and get some questions answered and meet the legend himself. take care Mat stay safe. Hi John. 6 times!!! That's impressive. It's really appreciated. The GDMBR is an absolutely incredible ride and I'd recommend it to anyone. I think a mountain bike is the best way to go, either flat bar or drop bar. It's the tyre size which is important. Running some low pressures in wider tyres takes the edge off all that washboard. I'm more than happy to meet up if the timing works out. It's what I love most about these trips. My email.is matryder2@gmail.com and if you send me a message I'll be sure to get in touch once I'm over. Thanks for the support. I've never been called a legend before. Cheers. Mat 👍

All the best for your blood! If you want to cross Missouri, I would consider the Katy trail instead of the transAm. I rode the Katy trail in 2005 it is the perfect route: Zero cars, little American towns, lots of cyclists, all services. The only downside is maybe the lack of descents. I didn’t ride the transAm, but I can’t imagine the Missouri section is better

I'm assuming you're teaming up with Ross again, uploading footage for him to make the episodes as you make your way through the Land Of Confusion? 😋 It's going to be another epic, that's for sure. I hope your doing the roads not so much travelled, staying away from the motorist maniacs as much as possible. I agree with announcing your plans. When I'm doing, for me, big things, I feel it's a smart move to announce them because it tends to make me even more commited. I said it so I have to do it. Don't want to be someone who's all mouth. Hi Mat, I almost never comment, but I felt compelled to this time. I just recently found your channel while looking for info about the Sonder Broken Road steel version. I have to say, it's a breath of fresh air when it comes to bikepacking content. I am really enjoying the the GDMBR series. The lack of music, the sounds of nature and your natural commentary are very refreshing. Best of luck for this trip too. I'd ask how is your Sonder holding up, but it honestly seems to be quite fine. I hope there's much more to come from you, and I hope you can gain more subscribers as your video quality is on par or superior to much, much more popular channels.

Hi. I'm glad you're enjoying the GDMBR series. It was such an awesome trip. The Sonder performed flawlessly. I had no trouble with it at all and, aside from a few scratches it's in great shape. Even the wheel bearings seem fine. I imagine the steel version will be a good buy. Thanks again for all the kind words. Cheers 👍

Sounds like a wonderful ride. I've driven that route in its entirety, twice, and it's one of the better ways to get across America. Yellowstone is a great place to pass along the way, though if I were doing a ride across America starting from Oregon, I would probably bend my route toward Ontario, Oregon, and then down to Boise and Twin Falls (the last place in America which had (has?) an intact downtown), then to Salt Lake City, and then to Moab, head toward Bluff (the town which inspired the town of Radiator Springs in the movie "Cars"). I like Utah, it's a majestic place, and the people there are wonderfully hospitable. Keep going south to Teec Nos Pos in Arizona, and then turn east. This is the heart of "Indian Country," a place where I spent a lot of time in my youth. The Navajos aren't the most social people, but the Big Rez is probably one of the most "haunted" feeling places in America. The only negative about Indian Country is the lack of places which serve beer, though a Hopi or Zuni would be happy to share one of theirs. The route would take you on through Taos, New Mexico, then veer up toward Dodge City in Kansas. You are wise to avoid the Deep South in that season. You won't meet friendlier people anywhere else in America, but between the heat, humidity, and "love bugs" in the late summer, I'd follow the roads you've chosen.

I trust that the TransAmerica people keeps riders well updated on conditions, but be aware that the Idaho/Western Montana part of your trip will be through forests that are going to be very dry (and hence susceptible to fire) much earlier in the season than usual. Lolo Pass and Lost trail Pass in western Montana both got only about 60% of normal moisture. Meaning fire danger will be high early in the summer. And unfortunately, alternative routes are literally hundreds of miles of miles longer. I live right on your route right now, but sadly I’m moving to Utah in a month, so I won’t be here when you come through. But I of course am looking forward to watching your channel as you make your way across the country. Good Luck!

For the "original" Trans America bike route that Mat is hinting at doing, the answer is No. This is pretty much the same route that was established in 1976, well before the concept of "Rails to Trails" even existed. A few years ago an "Eastern Express" route was established that (assuming a westerly direction) starts in D.C. (instead of Yorktown) and connects to the original TransAm route in northern Colorado. This alternative DOES include many Rails to Trails sections, including the Katy Trail. Several people have video blogged about this route. 'Vlady was here' did a very nice video series on this route last Summer.
