The Wilburys started as an attempt to record a B-Side for a George Harrison Continental European only release. Lynn was Harrisons producer on his Cloud 9 Album, and he met with him and Orbison for dinner to discuss the song. Orbison was then invited to attend the session (just to watch). They planned to record the next day but there were no Studios available, so Harrison called Dylan and asked to borrow his Garage Studio. Petty was invited to attend after Harrison went to his house to retrieve a Guitar he'd lent him. This session then turned into an impromptu collaboration between the Five. The resultant song, Handle with Care, was deemed to good to be wasted as a B-Side and the Wilburys were formed. You wont find a live recording of the Wilburys. They released two studio albums, the second after Orbisons death. They never went on tour. George Harrison hated tours (he was scared from his days in the Beatles) and only ever did two solo tours.

I think the 2002 Live performance was from the 'Concert For George'; a tribute Concert held in London 2002 following George Harrisons death. Petty and Lynn performed Handle with Care (not End of the Line) alongside George's son Dhani and a few other artists; so it was only two of the Wilburys. The concert comprised songs mostly composed by Harrison, performed by many artists he was closely associated with including the surviving Beatles, Clapton and Monty Python. Not sure why Bob Dylan never appeared.

@@ericnordstrom4335 Was it kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqunY6t6g7KobJI you looked at (its the only result I get). That video isn't the Wilburys, Its a tribute band called the Travelling Milburys. The Wilburys never toured when they were active as a band and Orbison died before End of the Line was released. Harrison hated touring and did only one in the last decade of his life. Its possible Petty, Dylan and Lynn did an impromptu performance of the song, but the only one I'm aware of was Petty and Lynn in 2002 performing it with Dhani Harrison at the concert for George.

Probably the greatest Supergroup ever. The lack of ego shown by these guys was shown by the fact that all the songs they wrote were credited to all the members regardless of who actually wrote the lyrics and music. The drummer was Jim Keltner a fantastic session drummer. Although not a Wilbury he was given the name Buster Sidebury.

The founders were actually George Harrison and Jeff Lynne. They then decided that each could add 1 person. Jeff Lynne took Roy. Harrison took Dylan....somehow Tom Petty slid in and it was perfect.

Thanks, Arias - this is the definition of a "supergroup" - everyone checked their egos at the door and enjoyed each others' talents... also give it up for drummer Jim Keltner (the un-credited sixth Wilbury - he was offered to have credit, but declined...) Quite a few great songs by this amazing collaboration... (yep, Roy passed before the video was made...)...

This was a group of superb musicians goofing around in a recording studio. As you said bad music is impossible with a line up like this! You've got one of the Beatles - George Harrison, A founding member of ELO - Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty (and the Heart Breakers), and two absolute Legends in Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison! You need to check out each of these guys separately as well! Suggestions... Try- Jeff Lynne - Mr Blue Sky. George Harrison - My Sweet Lord. Tom Petty - You Got Lucky Babe. Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay. Roy Orbison - Crying.

This was just a fun project for these guys. The story is that 2 of the guys were on their way to pick up Roy Orbison. Then they were heading over to the home of one of the other guys (I think Bob Dylan). I think they were just going to have a jam session. They started talking, and voila, a new band was formed. Not for anything real serious. Just to have fun. Orbison passed away after the recording of this song, but before the video was made.

Is Led Zeppelin a supergroup? Led Zeppelin: A brief history Led Zeppelin formed as a 'supergroup' in 1968, set up by former Yardbirds guitarist Jimmy Page. Cream, Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker. What supergroup was Eric Clapton in? Blind Faith - Wikipedia Blind Faith were an English supergroup that consisted of Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech. The Power Station. The Power Station could only have been created in the 80s. Featuring Robert Palmer, former Chic drummer Tony Thompson and two of the Taylor triplets from Duran Duran. The Highwaymen. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. ELP were so assured and successful so quickly that it’s easy to forget a time before their music dominated the first half of the 1970s. Keith Emerson and Greg Lake ran around on their respective bands - The Nice and King Crimson - after their eyes briefly met at a gig at the Fillmore West, or so the story goes. Breaking up the happy home of Atomic Rooster to purloin Carl Palmer seemed easy enough after that. Asia Given their stellar prog rock pedigree - King Crimson, Yes, ELP - no one saw Asia commandeering the US mainstream in the early 80s 1) Cream The band that set the template for the supergroup (Clapton would try his luck again later with Blind Faith), Cream were so good that they could make you forget Eric Clapton’s haircut. And unlike a lot of so-called supergroups, they managed to maintain a career that took in three pivotal albums in a little over four years. Egos, inevitably, got in the way, but they’ll always leave us wanting more. www.loudersound.com/features/the-top-20-best-supergroups
