This marvellous film is an all time classic. Great acting performances from Huston, Bogart, Holt and Bennett! Superb storyline and convincing dialogue. The director, John Huston does an amazing job in maintaining the tension and drama throughout the film. A real masterpiece of acting and direction.

None of which would have been possible without the superlative story telling and narrative as laid out in B. Traven’s original novel from 1935.

This magnificent film has the ultimate element which is missing in almost all films made in the last 30 years or so and that's art. What's forgotten in film making today is the fact that movies are not real life. They are make believe and they require a large factor of entertainment. One of the many things that makes this masterwork the greatest American film is John Huston's incomparable ability to combine both creative expression and realism.

My favourite thing about this movie is how the dynamics change, first its Dobbsy by himself, then he finds Curtin and they become instant compadre's and live off each other in a healthy way, then once they get their plan and set off with the Old Man they become untrustworthy of the Old Man, then once they have a find, they become untrustworthy of each other and start to sorta trust the Old Man, but once Cody shows up it's suddenly a two side switch, with Dobbsy, Curtin and the Old Man on one side, and Cody on the other, then another shift is when they see the bandits coming their way, they are now all on the same team, even feeling saddened with the loss of Cody, as if they were starting to like him, I mean hell if it wasn't for him and his rifle they woulda died all 4 of 'em. The movie is a masterpiece that I stupidly didn't watch for a long time until just yesterday.

Instant compadres? They ....THEY are untrustworthy of each other? What movie did you watch? Stop making up s***. Dobbsy and curtain meet on a park bench, they share the same sentiments and disparities.....Fred sees a mark and they part ways with fred forgetting all about curtain and puts the bite on...hey mister, can you stake a fellow American.... They cross paths again when they both got suckered into working for free...they become allies in getting what is owed out of the swindlers pocket and a cantina beat down and now they are sidekicks but only pals when fred realizes he has enough to go out with the old man from a lucky number purchase from a young robert whats his name...i dont care. After mistrusting the old man together, because they were more irritated from getting whipped on the trail and the old mans pace is kicking them in the teeth....once they realize the old man was dancing on pay dirt and the first deposit divided equal 3ways, it was always dobbsy as the untrustworthy one truly and hiding their goods from the other two was a agreed-upon solution that is only smart because trust is a suckers game....but not fred...c....DOBBS...get em up....GO ON GET EM UP!!🤨😤😠....thats murder dobbsy....ohhhh no, YOURE MISTAKEN, IM DOING THIS TO SAVE MY LIFE😠😤 YOUR version of the movie....i oughtta pump you up chest and belly alike....sure, HELP YOURSELF, we're no misers here, TONIGHT YOU'RE OUR GUEST BUT IN THE MORNING, SCRAM, BEAT IT, BEWARE OF THE DOGGGGS...SABE?

Terrific scene featuring Bruce Bennett, former Olympic triathlete (when he was Herman Brix) turned dependable character actor. It shows how a good actor like Bennett could really shine with a great director like John Huston. Bennett had trouble getting into this scene (how to position himself, how to look at the other actors) until Huston called for a break and asked Bennett what was wrong. Bennett explained his problem and Huston merely looked at him and said, "Kid, you're SMARTER than these guys!" The next take, Bennett nailed the scene.
@animalntelligence3170 Жыл бұрын
Very interesting. Note Bennett's very realistic eye movements: he tries to speak to each among them, reckoning that all he needs to do is convince one of the men that he should be brought in. Please watch the film AND read the absolutely beautiful (if somewhat bloated -- the movie cuts away much irrelevant and sometimes uninteresting stuff) book.

Bruce Bennett fine actor....tim holt was as well....& of course Huston & Bogart

Bruce Bennett as the stranger couldn't get a handle on how to play his role. John Huston told him "you are SMARTER than all three of them and you know it." Huston was famous as a director who could 'give' the role to the actor with a few carefully chosen words.

In the book the bandits weren’t so affable and jovial , they massacred a whole train full of innocent civilians, they even tortured them by setting the train on fire after they robbed them , the bandits all get killed by federales.

Cody was pretty presumptuous to think he could start prospecting right where they found gold. He was jumping their claim in an arrogant way, even if they didn't file a claim, they were there first.

Cody has the most ridiculous dialogue of the whole script. He follows them, then says you can either kill me or make me a partner. It makes zero sense. His proposition is sure to result in his death, while he could have just waited in town until they were done and they do his own prospecting. No one would be that nonchalant about dying unless they were suicidal. But he has a wife; again zero sense.
@GeorgeSmiley20237 ай бұрын
I think it adds to the psychological element of the film, reminded me of the brother coming out of nowhere in "there will be blood", at first I thought he would join them and later on try to take their gold, great film nonetheless.
