The entrance to France's Gironde estuary, on the Atlantic coast, makes you feel as though you've arrived at the world's end. For 400 years, the giant stone-structured Cordouan lighthouse has been watching over the captains carefully navigating their boats through the white, but tricky, sandbanks. Two keepers live in the lighthouse all year round, monitoring the fishing boats that pass through and which are filled with both great catches and exhilarating stories of the region's fishing history.
