The ending: I don't know if it travels, but here in the UK there is a famous advertising campaign for Ferro Rocher chocolates that revolves around an ambassador's party, and they say thing's like, "you're really spoiling us!"

There used to be a commercial on TV for Ferrero Rocher with the chocolate being presented as very sophisticated and the catchphrase in the commercial at the end was " Ambassador you are really spoiling us " hence the joke at the end.

We Swedes really love our pickled herring. And now as Christmas is near, all the traditional herring dishes comes out and we eat more than ever of the little fishes in jars. Good to see you back in action. Calling your home a "pad" goes back to 18th Century thieves' slang. It is derived from a bed made of piled up straw & blankets, but became a self-deprecating way to describe your lodgings. Obviously not just your lodgings specifically. I'm sure you weren't around in 18th Century London. Although, I suppose one shouldn't make assumptions...

The term "pad" for an apartment originated in Britain in the 17th century, where it was used by criminals and poor travelers to refer to a bed made of straw or rags. The term maintained its underworld associations into the 20th century, when it was used to refer to a place where drug users gathered. By the 1960s, hippies began using the term without the drug association. Today, "pad" is commonly used to refer to a smaller residence, such as an apartment.

I agree with your little pep talk at the end. I have for a lot of my life been fairly negative, often finding the most petty things to complain about. After I went through my whole cancer battle in 2021 to 2022 I got a completely new outlook on life. I don't wanna be that guy who moans all the time (of course that does not mean no moaning at all). I don't wanna stress over petty shit. The positive attitude I gained during my treatment in my opinion helped me recover fully and recover quicker, and I have kept that attitude since. People would constantly say to me during the whole time "How the fuck are you so happy all the time? I would be devastated" and my answer was "What benefit would I get from being miserable?" The nurses in the hospital loved having me as a patient as I was always polite, thankful and always cracking jokes. One even turned around and said that all the nurses loved having me there because so many people are depressed and that impacts on them. Having someone totally the opposite to that gave them positive feelings themselves. They were only too happy to come see me if I had buzzed for something because they knew it wasn't something miserable (well apart from that time I shit myself ). 🤣🤣

This is from a great special featuring an array of big UK comedy stars of the time - 'The Nearly Complete and Utter History of Everything'. This sketch is probably the most memorable bit but then it is appropriate given that the Treaty of Westphalia pretty much ended major religious wars in Europe. That said, they're wrong about Ferrero Rocher - they're epic and their ad was clearly memorable.

I read that the expression "pad" derived from pied-à-terre (foot on the ground) which was used to mean an apartment or other small living space that wasn't your main residence. But I can see that there are at least two other posts here that give a completely different derivation from poor people's dwellings in the 17th or 18th century. So now I am completely confused. Maybe it is one or the other. Or both. Or neither. Is there an etymologist in the house?

There are so many subtle jokes in this one along with the obvious one, so good! The end joke might only work in the UK, ferrero rocher ran a series of ADs over here where the chocolate was served at the party/gathering hosted by the 'ambassador' with the line 'Ohh ambassador your really spoiling us' was always used, usually by a beautiful woman. The implication being that ferrero rocher is a high class quality product. Now to break some people's illusions on this, ferrero rocher is made with the left overs of other products, it's a total scam! haha yeah really, they use the bits that are cut off or trimmed while making other products, slap them all together and call it a perimium product. Just shows the power of Ads, the cheapest product to make is the one they sell for the most profit, all from implying it's a luxury item :D
