Again huge thanks to Ralph Hawkins for supplying much of the information and photos used. Be sure to check out his site HawkinsRails.net. If you want the pair of T&G survivors in action today, check out my several videos on the Texas State Railroad!

Great video, Bishop, I think one of your best. Of particular interest to me because in the summer of 1959 my father, who was one of the executives at the Brown Paper Mill, got me a job in the finishing room of the mill. One of the things I had to do was load box cars with what we called counter rolls of paper. Those are rolls 9 inches in diameter and of various widths that are used usually in stores for wrapping small packages. The really big rolls, like 6 feet in diameter were loaded on another dock, and required more skill than our group of stupid college kids had. The funniest thing I got to do was to take the "switch list" out to the rail yard to let them know they should come get our full cars. (I didn't get to do this very often because one or two of the old guys wanted the opportunity to get out of the mill so they could smoke.) I well remember seeing a couple of steam engines, which I assume were on the T&G sitting in the yard, waiting for orders. I also loved it when they came into the mill to grab the cars. While I was a rail fan at the time, I was not a very good one and made no pictures or notes of anything. So I don't know if any of the locomotives I saw were #30. It would have been nice to have had a cell phone. Footnote: by the end of that summer I was ready to get back to LaTech and do some serious studying so I could eventually get a job in an air-conditioned office and not have to face the heat of the paper mill for the rest of my life.

The Shreveport, Jonesboro and Natchez was built from Jonesboro and Sikes by the South Arkansas Lumber Company. This line was sold to the Tremont Lumber Company April, 3 1906 and became the Jonesboro branch of the Tremont and Gulf. The SJ&N and the South Arkansas Lumber Company was built by mostly the same men who built the Arkansas Southern. After the Rock Island acquisition of the Arkansas Southern they built the SJN and the Lumber Mill in Jonesboro. Charles E. Neely was president of the company and he had held several offices with the Arkansas Southern Railroad. I have the conveyence records of the sale to the Tremont Lumber Company.

I grew up in Choudrant, not three miles from what once was Tremont (pronounced there as Tree-mont). Unfortunately what I'm assuming was a town in its on right, is all but grown over.

My only wish is you'd reached out to me before I moved half way across the country, I worked at the mill in West Monroe with the very last bit of T&G traffic known, my Grandpa worked there most of his life and remembered 30 when I took him to the TSRR several years ago as well
