The Tribe is problematic for a number of reasons. In addition to being harmful for the story and world, they perpetuate harmful stereotypes about Native people. Whether or not the Erins ever intended to reference their cultures is somewhat irrelevant at this point, considering the number and strength of the parallels that do exist, and the harm they can cause. The Tribe is boring, and few to no fans in Warriors are genuinely excited when they show up (although Flipclaw might think differently). But does it really matter if there’s one boring group in Warriors? How bad could they be?

Great video! It's really too bad what happened with the Tribe. It's sad that the most interesting parts of the tribe come from the beginnings of the tribe: The stuff with Jay's Wing and Half Moon, and then in DotC, seeing where Clear Sky and Gray's Wing came from. But even then, those plotlines are much more interesting before and after making/leaving the tribe. ToT The Tribe just can't win.

Just specifically for Feathertails arc with the tribe, I would have preferred that they kidnapped Stormfur thinking he would save them but that a "silver cat" from the tribe ultimately does. Like they had the strength all along!

Aren't all the tribe cats described as being brown tabbies and gray/black as well? I think the one thing that has always bothered me is that I'm pretty sure I recall the books saying that they rolled in mud to hide themselves...why would they need to do that? lol. Cats are literally infamous for hiding in plain sight.

Well keep in mind, they dont really have any outsiders come in too often, so they are all fairly inbred, so they will all have similar pelt colors and patterns, assuming they've all been having kits with eachother like this for generations with little to no outside intervention.

For example Millie and Graystripe having a calico and a brown kitten, Moonflower A grey tabby and Stormtail a dark bluish grey cat having a mostly white kitten Snowfur and Two ginger cats Brightflower and Brackenfoot producing a grey kitten Yellowfang a Brown tortoiseshell kitten Rowanberry and and an all brown kitten Nutwhisker along with Coat colors that don't exist in real life such as golden and dark ginger. Its not a far fetch to say that the clan cats feel... like their religion and their practice of said religion feels inspire by christianity. As a jewish kid it was real easy for me to pick up the very very clear hitler allegory that tigerstar was in the first series. And to me... the idea that our first impression of another cat religion is one that is “less refined” and constantly needs saving and can at times be just flat out wrong makes me feel a bit uncomfortable

I actually have an objection! The reason Greystripe went to the tribe in Greystripe’s Vow was because he missed his son. Greystripe had never went to the tribe before hand, so it serves as sort of a first introduction as well. Greystripe was never the one to consider living in the Tribe, that was Flipclaw. So you see, Greystripe couldn’t have met Stormfur and had that deep conversation that he had on his way back from the old Forest. Also, cats from his past were very important to the story already and he was planning to go to the forest and the only way to go was to go across the mountains first. I don’t know if this makes sense but I just really like Greystripe’s Vow. I also really like the Tribe and I wish they were more important to plot then they actually were.

Alright, so I'll bring one counter argument: One of the times they meet, the tribe is the one to saved them. In Dawn, they welcome the starving and freezing clans into their cavern. It was a cool way to make Feathertail's death and the whole tribe storyline meaningful. Sadly, the next books don't follow this trend.

I feel like the tribe didnt work. The clans were cool cuz it was an idea of a group of cats, but they basicly duplicated it and but made them weaker. Its also strange that every few months cats hike up and down mountains with basicly kittens. What we need is a super edution from the perspective of the modern tribe (not DotC tribe) where the clan is not involved or talked about. I also think that it shouldnt'be in the perspective if stormfur since he was originated from the clan. A story from the POV of lark or pine would be good.

I have to disagree on your point that the sisters are the only nuanced group outside of the clans. In Tigerheart's Shadow Dovewing and Tigerheart stay with the guardian cats, who I find extremely interesting! I was so glad when they didn't give up scavenging to hunt in the cold, because is felt like a victory against clan ways!

Great video! It's been a while but I remember reading the parts with Jay's Wing creating the tribes and just wondering... what was the point? What did the tribe really add to the plot of the series overall? But most of all it was always weird how they kept showing that a clan lifestyle doesn't work in the mountains where the territory is too big to patrol effectively, yet that's never addressed and the tribe just have to accept the clan way of life?? It could have been done so much better and more interesting

Ok, I can't hold it in any longer, I gotta say it: The Tribe was actually more important than it seems at least in "Moonrise". If the Tribe would not have sheltered the six travelling cats, would they have still made it back to their Clans? NO! They would have died freezing and starving (is mentioned in the book that Leaf-bare was around the corner), and all of the Clans would have been lost to the Twolegs' destruction! And even though Feathertail died, there was still her brother, Stormfur, that could deliver the message about the Clans needing to find a new home. And guess what? Stormfur himself became a tribe cat because he felt at home there more than in any Clan (check his Warriors Wiki page, there's a quote about that) Also, Fun Fact: Vicky said that the Tribe of Rushing Water was made in honour of the horrors of 9/11 and Kate said that the Tribe was her favourite group outside the Clans

I liked them in greystrip's vow. I think you get a glimps of what they could be in that- they certainly show off how powerful they can be and Stonefur at least gets a bit of interesting characterization. The solidification that their afterlife exists ont he same plane but is still wholly separate and unaffected by starclan is also more interesting in the context of existing alongside the sister's afterlife and mroe significantly warriorclan's starclan 2.0. I wish they did something with that fact beyond feathertail being able to get a small but ultimately pointless communication to her father but it's at least a start...

I kinda want to talk about one of the two backstories for an OC, Twigsnap (or Twig Snap, as his Tribe name would be). They're either born into RiverClan or they were a Tribe cat that got Graystripe'd (brought to Twolegplace). He then escapes and becomes a loner on the Clan territories. That one's kinda important. Right after he gets out of being a Twoleg pet, Twig Snap is obviously confused as to why these forest cats are so hostile. He runs off to find RiverClan being somewhat more hospitable, with an apprentice helping him out secretly. Twig once again moves when this apprentice starts pushing him to join his "Clan", where he would be welcomed. Not wanting to give up his heritage and beliefs, he starts travelling around to catch prey, becoming somewhat of a common invader. What I'm trying to say is how the Clans overall treat non-Clan groups: pushy and assimilating towards them. Twig Snap here wants to still believe in the Tribe of Endless Hunting, but to get near any sort of thing similar to his Tribe he has to give that up and possibly never see his ancestors again in any way. That kinda needs to change.

What you have to bear in mind is that the tribe was always going to be depicted as the inferior group within the narrative. Just as Skyclan is also depicted as an inferior group up until it joins up with the 4 clans by the lake. They perhaps get better treated only because of the whole kittypet co-operation angle and being set up by Firestar. The reason they are depicted as inferior groups is they are a demonstration of what Tigerstar and Brokenstar wanted for the clans. And in stark contrast to what the clan's warrior ancestors laid down as the best system for the continued existence of them all. One unnaccountable clan vs multiple keeping each other accountable. One is more stable... except every new threat leads to an existential crisis because they are isolated as one group , they don't know how to adapt and have no one to turn to for help. The other has more conflict but when the existential crisis comes they are better prepared to adapt to the situation and work together. Outside forces may choose to take for granted the potential unity of the clans in a crisis and they will pay dearly for it. To be fair to the tribe though the authors never give them any wins at all which is a bit harsh and maybe the problem is that what the tribe cats are good at (being hyper specialised to live in the mountains) and their weakness (External threats and new unfamilliar problems) doesn't leave much room for a good story.

While not my favorite I do enjoy them and don’t find them boring or harmful to the story or world at all It enhances the story and world Also bloodclan is the first new group seen, not the tribe The new prophecy didn’t lack characterization, it had lots of it, each character was distinct especially the main characters. Squirrelflight, Brambleclaw, Stonefur, Feathertail, Leafpool, crowfeather, etc are all good The tribe isn’t lifeless, some cats we haven’t been explored yet Yeah they aren’t my favorite part but it’s still good/fine They aren’t boring or badly made and are intriguing They need help from the clans to have them in the story but I agree seeing new groups is interesting The sisters are interesting I agree There’s also the guardian cats

First of all: all of this is your opinion and is not correct. I do not believe Feathertail and Stormfur had personality and thought they had pretty bland tom and she-cat personalities. For the tribe, I do believe they are lifeless. Not many of them have personality and anytime we go to the tribe the book doesn’t decide to explore it when they have the chance. Yes, we may get to see the tribe in the future but for now, Dawn Of The Clans has the best version the tribe.

I agree. The tribe doesn’t have any substance other than damsels for, and let’s be honest here, ThunderClan to save and be even more of a cult than the clans are. After Tnp I loathe the tribe and would’ve preferred Stormfur and Brook to have remained with the Clans because when they were clan cats we learned more about them as a couple and as individuals then we ever did when they’re at the home they love so much.

Chronologically from the cats' perspective, that is true. But Firestar's Quest came out after The Sight, the first book in the Power of Three arc and long after we had met Leafpool and the Tribe.

Yeah, honestly, the Tribe is a mess. I remember my friend and I were taking about it because we were reading through TNP, which has the Tribe in it. I honestly find the books with the Tribe (the current one, I have yet to read through all of DoTC) very boring. _I’m talking about spoilers for some books down here._ Outcast honestly isn’t that memorable, as nothing too important happens from what I can remember. The only thing I really remember about it is that Lionpaw beat some cats up or something. The same goes for Sign of the Moon but I found it a bit more memorable because that’s when Stoneteller died. I have read a bit of DoTC, and it seems pretty interesting. Like always, the Tribe was in trouble, yada-yada. I do like that the Tribe actually had some sort of character development for their characters in that series though. Like you said, the Tribe now just seems dull and full of cardboard cutouts for cats.

Biggest problem with the tribe is it’s existence. The whole thing is cultural appropriation to Indigenous people So is the word “medicine cat” *shudders* an indigenous person said that tribes often had someone that dealt with healing herbs and treated wounds. Great video! however I got the vibes you were leaning a bit hard on jayfeather about the time travel stuff, when I feel pointing out how Rock basically forced Jayfeather to make half-moon stoneteller could have led to some interesting points about how even the narrative of the books say the tribe is forced and hamfisted as even the cats who created the tribes had to be forced into it by outside forces of destiny

It's less that I blame Jayfeather and more that I find it problematic that a cat from outside the Tribe had so much sway over it's past, present, and future. It's just another way in which the Tribe is wholly dependent on and even defined by a relationship with the clans. But you're right. It's not all Jayfeather's fault, of course. And honestly the fact that Jayfeather had a hand in the Tribe's founding is really interesting to me from a storytelling perspective.

Totally agree with all of this- the tribe is a cool idea but i really wish they got more interesting stories and they weren’t presented as so terrible they constantly need saving from the clan cats. Great video! Keep it up

Spoilers for GreyStripes Vow- I wish FlipClaw stayed with the tribe because he was already feeling like an outsider in ThunderClan and had just been rejected by his love interest. Him staying with the tribe would have made so much more sense
