When you're indenting, take a flashlight and lay it on the table so that it casts light sideways over your drawing surface. This will let you see your indentations as it will cast small shadows in all the valleys you're creating.

The tip: you can use it with watercolors, but the effect will be reverse. It's really convenient for painting flowers and leaves, you don't need to paint its veins above, the paints flow down the channels and make these places darker. Probably your watercolor brush has a pointed tip exactly for this. Thanks for the useful video, I'm sure I saw this effect while drawing but never thought of using it!

I don't know if this has been said already but, if you gently lay Scotch Magic tape over the surface of your drawing and press down using the tool then carefully lift off the tape. It removes a layer/layers of colour creating hilights. This works on pastel drawings also. It works for me!

I used this technique for the exactly opposite in watercolor : ) Pigments will concentrate in the crevices to create beautiful darker texture. Works great for petals or grass fields. To preserve white spaces using watercolor, I can't think of anything but masking fluid. Does anyone know anything else that would work for white details?

I like to use a white wax based color pencil to preserve white. Clear & white crayons can work as well. Draw with your pencil or crayons first & then you can paint over them, as watercolor paint is wax resistant.

Hi Kirsty. I have used this technique for almost twenty years and if you use a small light on an angle it creates a shadow in the embossing making it much easier to see, also embossing tools can break and cut the paper so personally I use a dart with the tip filed down as this is much more substantial. It is also a good idea to work with the paper on a hard surface like MDF as if a surface is to soft the embossing is diminished and less visible. Thanks.

@@michelleconnor7669 It is a very versatile technique and works best on 300g 100% cotton watercolour paper. A wax based pencil works really well with watercolors for highlights: the wax resists the water leaving that area pure. Or you can use masking fluid. This indenting doesn't really work with watercolor because the water will go into the indent.
