That's great news! It gets quite cold like that here too, thankfully we don't get the wind that you do though. Happy seed starting Jill!

Oh I love your huge greenhouse! What a blessing to be able to start growing already. We have a heated greenhouse & don't even think of turning the heater on until the start of May. Our last frost date is usually June 4-6 up here. Short season but lots of daylight here in Whitehorse Yukon

Your climate is so freakishly different to mine. I have a greenhouse with a small heater, but I would have long since stopped using it by May! I was shocked to see frost damage on some potato sprouts in early April here this year. Of course, any pleasant summer is over by July and its all rain and humidity and insects until late September at best...
@renamaemcdonald20753 жыл бұрын
@@calebfuller4713 I don't do well with any temps above 70 if I'm working at all outside. You can always dress for the cold but you can't with heat! It does make things challenging to garden though. We are at the time of year when there's 24-hour daylight so lots of growth happening right now 🙂

I have gone a step further. I'm a pen and paper thinker, for the most part I know what I like to grow and the specifics of varieties (if they differ from the standard average) but once I've answered the question...how long..., I put it in my Google calendar and set it to repeat yearly. Then I can just go to my seed box, pull and go. I still organize by type vs when to plant things. I think it's because I have a seed hoarding problem lol. Most of the time, my pattern of sorting garden chores follows the exact same time on the calendar, use after year. This extra time saved allows me extra time to improve structure and other planning. My challenge is fitting everything on my shelves! I separate my cold tolerant seeds in joined flats and warm stuff together because once I can evict seedlings, I do, to make room for later season and secession seedlings. The worst thing is have lettuce and flowers or peppers as seed tray neighbors and not bring able to put the Lettuce out without repotting it. I dream of a green house like this, but we do not have Montana winters, nor do I make a living from my veggies. So I can't justify it in my mind. However, I might gift myself a pallet and cattle panel one for Christmas. Lol

Fantastic idea with the full year glance calendar 🗓 I will be doing that from now on so I can keep track of my seedling dates and planting dates and all that good stuff. It can get really hard to try and keep track of it all. My friend and I are trying to get a community garden going this year to help supply our local food pantry with fresh homegrown produce. Also while keeping up with our own personal gardens. We are so excited to get this going. So basically having double gardens will be that much more to stay on top of. 🤪😁

I’m in subtropical Florida, zone 9b. Our growing seasons are the opposite of yours. No snow or freezes, we can’t garden in the summer because the heat and sun scorches everything. Fall through spring is our growing seasons, but fruit trees and pineapples grow all year. Hot peppers can handle some summer heat.🦎🌴🍍🌺🥥🍌 In spite of all this I’m rushing now because I waited too long to get the spring crops going so they can fruit before summer gets here and puts an end to everything. ☺️🌿👍🏼

I live in Illinois and it has been covered by snow, many times, and now that the snow is gone, it looks good again and I think it is even growing some more. Crazy!!! I wish I had a good place to to start seeds but I really don't. I do have a basement which is cooler, so maybe I should just try a few and see if anything happens.

Hey Jill, so I looked up our last frost date (97735) in the good ol Farmers Almanac. Last Spring Frost and First Fall Frost were both labeled "Year Round Risk". So we never really plant before Memorial Weekend so basically that is when I am safe. But the last one, I guess I have never paid attention because when we would head to the fair Labor Day weekend it seemed like we were freezing... ya I don't know. P.S. Have you planted anything in old stock tanks? I have a LOT of rusted out round ones but not sure how to cover them. You know for those year round frost risks. *sigh*

I have a 3 season porch that I heat with a space heater, but I started some of my snow peas way too early. I have to brainstorm how to keep them from looking like ground cover. I may pre plant them in a burlap lined window box liner with a little light wire fence that can let them vine until I can get them out. I welcome any suggestions
@juliegogola46472 жыл бұрын
Wow, so you had spinach and kale freeze in your unheated greenhouse, and then it came back undamaged? I should try growing some in winter in my heated greenhouse in winter, but maybe lack of enough sunlight would prevent seed germination? But YOU had been able to grow it in winter, so unless those are leftover from last fall, you got them to germinate and grow, so maybe I can too? I can't grow straight into the ground with my greenhouse though. I have a gravel floor in mine and it is small, a 8X12, so, I grow in pots. But the heater makes it so that it all won't freeze. I do wish my GH was bigger, but mine is pretty good for what I use it for, mostly overwintering semi tender woody plants, and now I do have some room to start some veggies early. Chickens will eat green leafy veggies? Never would have guessed that.

Baby potatoes are called "new" potatoes. No need to peel them. Cook with skins. New potatoes are potatoes that the skins havent set. Setting the skins is killing the potato tops before digging them.
