I imagine 16th or even 32nd notes in my head and then lay the groove on that. Works great.

Subdividing the rhythms you're playing is a strategy that I use, especially if its at a super slow tempo. Playing quarter notes on the hi hats and 2 & 4 on the snare drum and counting 1e&a2e&a3e&a4e&a. Practicing with a metronome as slow as 30bpm. I don't try to count on a gig, but I imagine someone playing a shaker or a guiro. I also visualize a lion stalking its prey, moving super slow and low as to not scare away its victim :-) Playing half note triplets on the hi hats is a good exercise also, there's even more space than quarter notes.

Glad you mentioned point 3, use a practice pad. I have done that and it helps. Instead of starting slow and increasing speed on rolls and rudiments, etc. I start a little faster and work at slowing it down. Helps me with that "space" you were talking about. Another great video.

Nice advice. What helps me with very slow tempos is breathing out on the downbeat and breathing in on the afterbeat. But only with SLOW tempos otherwise your brain start spinning around....🤪

Great advice ! BTW, I grew up in the 1970s listening to AM radio and learned to love slow tempo music. Only when I got older did I like playing drums on slow tempo numbers.

Great video! "The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull", by Earth is one of the hardest albums I've ever played along to. Most of the tempos are between 40 bpm. - 60 bpm.

Stephen very good suggestions. There is a great Dire Straits song titled Brothers in Arms (or something close to that). I cannot play to that tempo especially when 2/3rds in Mark Knopler has this energetic and emotional riff/solo. Switch to 16th notes on the hi-hat and still get ahead of it. Will try your tips and then play to it. Keep up the great work.

This literally is the best advice for playing stoner doom grooves like anything from the Earth catalogue (And the Bees Made Honey in the Lions' Skull). It's actually really calming and meditative music; simple as it is, this style requires a huge amount of mental discipline to be mindful and in the moment of the performance. It's really weird like that. The super fast death metal stuff is kinda easier than this stuff.

I'm not a pro drummer. How come just a S-L-O-W click doesn't do it? If you slow the click down and just play to it, won't that actually prevent you from rushing?
@gravediggerawx
@gravediggerawx 5 жыл бұрын
Because when the space between clicks get too far apart, your brain wants to anticipate it and you'd more likely hit before the click rather than on it. If you subdivide like another comment says, you would have half the space between what you are counting.

After playing in hardcore bands at 200bpm and then doing a ridiculous breakdown at like 20bpm... I think I've mastered slow playing and awkward space.
