Paprika is one of the best examples I can think of the power of animation. It's easier to conveyed the feeling of dreaming of conciousness and unconsioness merging together in anime than it would be on live action. This is why I think Inception is not that great of a movie, despite being inspired by Paprika, the "dream" world in that movie feels very tamed and unimagitive, Paprika's dream world on the other hand feels just as insane and over the top as my dreams are.
@lionheart4424

Thats on purpose, in Inception there is the role of the architect to keep the infiltrators and the dreamer in a controllable and somewhat safe environment. I kinda found the opposite, wasn't too fond of Paprika's vision of the dream world because to me its too over the top, and not even in my wildest dreams I find myself in scenarios like that.
@vaenkhar7236

That's actually quite the problem of dreams in general, it's so personal, intimate and relative to people's mind that it's practically impossible to make something faithful to everyone. The dreams we see in paprika can only be fully faithful to the people who made paprika... For some peoples it's really far from what they dream, too over the top, too strange etc, or not enough, or just with opposite ambiance etc... Like I'm a big dreamer, I do fucked up dream most of the time, extremely surreal and alien, semi horrific and magical at the same time, for me both paprika and inception are just not faithful to my dreams, (like imagine if Cronenberg, hrGiger, Lovecraft, myazaki, drWho and Pokémon try to make a full length anime together, boom you got something close to my dreams...), but it's normal, that's quite the charm of those movies, they're other people's dreams, not mine (thank god).

Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man." -Zhuang Zhou I have not watched the movie and therefore do not know if the famous butterfly quote by Zhuang Zhou appears in it, but at 13:40 after hearing the dialogue and seeing the butterfly under Paprika on the table made me think about Persona 1 and that quote.

I love introducing people to Kon with that because the beginning never fails to make them go "what in the world are you having me watch" and as soon as Kiyoko comes in they lose it. I feel that you might take alot home if you give Millennium Actress a shot. While Paprika and Perfect Blue showcases Kon's cailber as a story teller to tap into the psyche of humans. Millennium Actress is like a kaleidoscope peering back to one's memory through their own fictionalization and interpertation of it. Also it might be cool for you to tap into Hirasawa Susumu and his impact on Satoshi Kon's and Miura's work too. I find it intriguing that both were avid fans of Hirasawa while both are prolific story tellers, and they both choose Hirasawa as their sound for their work. I view Hirasawa as one of the first true avantgarde musician in the japanese music industry and still to this day he helms that position.

This is one of two films I often suggest when the subject of dreams comes up. This film is definitely has both a purely entertainment value as well as those juicy deep concepts. If you’re finished this film and want something a little different, might I suggest **”Waking Life”**? Waking Life is rotoscope style animation that takes a mindset to actually watch. It’s set up as a series of conversations as a young man discovers dreams through dreams. It is definitely more experimental and a bit longer (1h 41m) but definitely worth it for those who enjoy these topics

I saw Paprika a few years ago. Weirdest thing I've ever seen. It funny to think that I've done what that movie was trying to teach. I have a lot of religions trauma from growing up in a Christian family. I never quite fit into their world, and they made that fact very clear to me. I ended up with the belief that I was a demon for a very long time in my life. I almost lost my family and probably my life because of that belief. Over time my anger and hatred grew too much to bare. I began to hate the world and humanity. My trauma had taken the form of a wrathful, violent, demon or oni. I realized that I am the oni, that I've lost my humanity and I'm never getting it back. It was a very painful thing to except. But now I feel more complete. I now have a greater understanding of who I am. Now I feel like I can move forward.

Paprika was an excellent use of the medium. It's in the same league as Christopher Nolan's Inception in terms of writing but it being anime instead of film gives it so many freedoms to explore where Inception was bound by real world physics and budgeting. I saw this film ages ago and it remains to be one of my favorites to this day. It needs no update, sequel, reboot, remastering; it's a timeless materpiece.

I love this film, well, I love all of Kons films but this one is a particular departure from the tone of most of his other works. One of the things I thought was really interesting was how Christopher Nolan lifted whole sections of PAPRIKA and put them in INCEPTION. Imitation, homage or inspiration? Nolan borrowed heavily from PAPRIKA no matter what you call it, but PAPRIKA is still the better film.

So real. I wish there were more works like this! When life gives you lemons and refuses to take them back: make lemonade! When your shadow self keeps bugging you: let him be a part of the conversation! when your stomach is full of butterflies, and you’ve been biten by a love bug: embrace the dream-like allure of Limerence! I’m reminded of Odin from Norse mythology and his way of coping/controlling fate or ragnarok (at least in god of war) by keeping it all as close to himself as possible, not rejecting or running away from fate, but preemptively facing it so as to be able to understand it and have more “control” over where it happens, except as I’ve implied, its usually a last resort, some things are in the dark for a reason. Some urges deserve to be repressed! it’s all about balance, avoiding what you can and accepting what you can’t. Even if it takes a while to figure out which is which…

It's ironic how the psychological ideas displayed in this film themselves are closer to comforting lies than hard truths. Metaphors in symbolism themselves are reflections of reality altered to be easier to comprehend and potentially less scary than the real thing. The quality of a metaphor or symbol depends on its ability to be extended or parallel reality and this is where the flaws in psychoanalytics really show. The first comforting lie of psychoanalysis is the assumption of opposites all the perceived existence of binaries. This is not to say there are never binaries it's just that even among the examples provided it's not that simple. Sometimes it makes sense to see two things as opposites but that is a mental shortcut to make understanding the world easier. A simpler perspective is less work to consider and passable most of the time. Light and dark light is not merely defined by brightness but also by color. Now you might think that's irrelevant to the metaphor but it isn't in fact adding color adds to it. Because we're talking about human minds here perspective is going to vary and how light or dark something is depends on what colors you are capable of seeing. You might think that the sky between the stars is dark but you wouldn't think that if you could see microwaves and humans are bioluminescent but only if you can see infrared. In fact, if you start adding color even if it's just the visible light spectrum you can actually start to take the light and dark metaphor literally in cases of people with synaesthesia. Male and Female Sure males and females are different genders but they're not different enough to fit the definition of opposites. (Completely different) Among humans, there is not any complete difference. The spectrum that has male and female humans on opposite ends of it breaks the second you consider the inhuman, the animal, the alien, or the artificial intelligence. The minute you consider sentience yet an inhuman perspective and the boundless theoretical and existing variety of that perspective the idea that humanity has access to both opposites becomes absurd. Of course that would make humanity as a whole feel less important and perhaps that's why people are afraid of AI, aliens, or the possibility that animals are sentient. However, in regard to animals, there is already what humanity's collective cruelty to them says about humanity to be content with. Reality and dreams Dreams are not the opposite of reality. They're not fundamentally detached from it. Even psychoanalysis admits that they do reflect reality albeit in a metaphorical and seemingly random way. There's also scientific evidence that hearing a noise when dreaming even if it is insufficient to wake you can cause that noise to be heard in a dream. The true opposite of reality would be a delusion so complete that every aspect of it has been imagined independently lived experience. This true opposite might be impossible but that just proves the point that seeing these examples as opposites leads to misunderstanding the very thing that they are meant to be metaphors for misunderstanding the thing being used as a metaphor. Conscious and Unconscious Conscious and unconsciousness do appear to be opposites until you consider things that you're not aware of at all either consciously or unconsciously. So unconsciousness is merely the middle ground between awareness and obliviousness. But in terms of mental models used to describe consciousness and unconsciousness psychoanalytic likes to get silly and draw an iceberg with the bits below the waterline being unconscious in the bits above the waterline being conscious. When for most things there is no waterline it's both and therefore union between consciousness and unconsciousness isn't mystical it's mundane. Every time you learn something new your unconscious listens and encodes. If you have a very good memory then you'll be able to recall it without thinking. Even if you don't have a good memory things that you are aware of and things that you are not aware of are interacting in amazing ways all the time. Therefore unifying these two is just a case of doing what you're already doing just in a less maladaptive way. Union is not the hard bit the hard bit is knowing which bits to unify. For example, you would not want to make every sensory experience that your body processes unconsciously conscious at least not on a permanent basis. Because if your typical person were to do that they would find themselves with the sensory issues of autistic people. Exactly what needs to be unified and how is obviously going to depend on the exact case in question that is exactly why and if unity is even helpful under the circumstances those details of the hard bit. But the thing that I most dislike about psychoanalytic is the idea coming to terms with reality is painful. So painful in fact that some people would rather die than learn. I don't dislike this idea because it isn't true I dislike it because it suggests that painful self-reflection is the only kind and that the non-painful kind is not preferable. Although I might just be misinterpreting it. What psychoanalytic fails to mention is the possibility that self-reflection might be fun or that it can actually be made fun. If you're autistic the solution is simply usual special interest or interests as metaphors if you're near typical you're just going to have to be curious.

I'm not sure if you read many fiction novels, but I'd like to recommend looking up Zod Wallop by William Browning Spencer. It would have made an EXCELLENT Kon film. While events do deal with a merging of consciousness between a group of people, and there's a fair bit of fantastic imagery bleeding over into real life, the focus is largely on processing grief and healing from loss, so it may not shake you quite so deeply as some of Kon's films. It's been a personal favorite since I first came across it. (And if you are uninterested, then at least this will be another interaction treat for the algorithm.) Thank you for sharing your thoughts. A lot of the anime you've discussed are favorites of mine, and I enjoy seeing more content for them.

Honestly this movie doesnt make much sense. They never explain paprikas existence which is fine, but they should at least touch on the matter. We knew exactly what caused little slugger, we knew exactly why mima was having lapses in her psyche. But paprika was completly unexplained as to why the main character has an alter ego. Even her dynamic with her alter ego was inconsistent. And the romance at the end makes no sense.

@@Shadow666_ her alterego is her wishes, repressed feelings and how she perceives herself mixed with parts she wished to possess. As a psychiatrist, I guess she learned to look beyond the looks and focus on the personality alone.

@@JabamiLain Near the end Paprika told chiba to leave tokita behind. Why would her "repressed" side want to abandon him, but her other side wants the opposite all of a sudden? Tokita doesnt even really like her, he said in the dream world and the waking world he prefered paprika. Which makes sense because all chiba ever does is physically and verbally abuse him. And you cant really say she ever accepts paprika into herself because paprika still exists seperately from her. The antagonists were very one dimensional and their goals didnt really make much sense. Which was really dissapointing considering how fleshed out and well utilized the characters in perfect blue and paranoia agent are. Idk this movie was just really weak. Everything it tried to do was done leagues better in perfect blue and paranoia agent. Even the basics of characters and storytelling just never really came together in paprika.

@@Shadow666_well, I did say "Perfect Blue" was the movie that held my heart's center. But by the way, don't teenagers with a crush sometimes say and do...things against the people they crush on, especially when they feel heart brokened ?One of the points made in the movie seems to be how childish most of the main characters truly is, and how that reflects mostly in their unconcious side. In Chiba's case, she seems to behave like a know it all teenager, perhaps heart brokened over how he fell for her alterego instead of her. Or simply using her power position to do the already mentioned...things on her crush. Also, Paprika is both Chiba's idealized and self hated version (her unconcious in other words), which means she's pretty much her repressive agent, besides her being repressed personalities. I suppose Paprika wanted to leave him behind because she was trying to have Chiba keep those feelings locked inside. That, or she could be playing reverse psychology in order to get Chiba to come out regarding her feelings. That looks like something Paprika would pull off. There's also the possibility that since each seems to represent the two sides of the human brain and reality around them was crumbling, that each woman was picking on each other's traits. These are my interpretations.
@JabamiLain
@JabamiLain Жыл бұрын
@@Shadow666_indeed I can not. Shame. As for the villains, maybe not 1 dimensional. I'd say they're 2 dimensional at least, given their meaning to each other, the fact we don't know which one is the alterego and which one is real, and the implications behind their fantasies.

I watched this movie for the first time today (June 10th, 2023). There was one scene where a clock says, “SAT 17 JUN.” At that moment, I looked at the calendar on my phone and thought to myself, “Man, I was a week ahead.”

I don't care if I was getting paid millions to let someone else connect to my mind, I would absolutely say no cause nobody deserves to delve in the ever screaming, wildly cackling and violently weeping corridors of my mind where all the most traumatic, maddening and still pain inducing memories reside neatly compartmentalized and thoroughly repressed. I really wish I was exaggerating but I'm a hundred percent positive the person would go stark raving mad from the experience.

@maxderrat As someone on the Spectrum and an anime fan myself, I love all these videos analyzing anime from an AS perspective!!!!! Have you ever seen any of Violet Evergarden (either the TV series or movie; the former precedes the latter)? That anime is a super fascinating one to look at through the lens of ASD cause of how it depicts what it's like to learn and feel really complex social emotions that are multifaceted and hard to understand from an AS perspective (I literally cried multiple times while I was watching it). There's also a superb live action film from last year called You Won't Be Alone directed by Goran Stolevski that reminds me of what the internal experience of being on the Spectrum more than almost any other piece of media.

One way to enhance the experience of this trippy movie is by watching it on June 17th, 2023 at ~11:00 pm. DO NOT pause until you see a number on a clock change to 17. Then, look at the date and time on both the movie and your device. As of now (June 10th, 2023), you have one week to do this. If not, try again in 2028. 😉

There should be more movies about lucid dreaming, preferably ones that strive for accuracy. I think lucid dreamers should also be hired to work on these movies. I think creative industries need more lucid dreamers in general. Hollywood has gotten very creatively bankrupt and people who pay more attention to their dreams have higher creativity and can even use their dreams to inspire more creative ideas. Often times dreams do tell better stories than most movies or tv shows

This reminds me of the movie The Cell with Jennifer Lopez. Edit: Worth noting Paprika red color and red head as a symbolic female like a comet. On the topic of dreams then looking at archetypes, on top the pineal gland with the production of DMT. As for ending would say to work in harmony like the alchemical wedding.

I found the point about the unconscious integrating with the conscious to be a really interesting point. I'm caught, on the one hand, the unconscious is like unfiltered reality, on the other, the conscious is heavily filtered reality. Both sides of this coin can get it horribly wrong. But in the end we find that the solution in Paprika is a kind of deliberate connection with everything. The unconscious, conscious, and world outside your brain all in connection, and through that, the clarity to overcome the obstacle in front of you.

Kon’s films literally feel like shrooms to me. At one point in the video he says he takes a while to self reflect which it’s an effect that shrooms give off kinda like being judged by your own mind. So trippy

I had always heard how trippy this film is. I watched it and honestly it isn't all that weird or trippy. The story makes sense and tracks pretty well with the characters. The visuals are amazing but i dont think that makes the film trippy. For some reason something like The boy and the heron seems way more strange and trippy to me.

I dont think Tokita got into the form of the toy robot because he was afraid of toys, instead he was afraid and conflicted by rejection of his friends. And the image of his face on the toy robot in Himuro's room realy hurt him, thats why he proyects himself into that shape.
