Man, this answered something ive sat on for a minute Im building up a stack of comics to send off and i had heard about pressing and wondered when exactly itd be useful _and_ i had noticed with a lot of the recent "regular" comics from either DC or Marvel (and sometimes smaller) are alittle wavy fresh off the stands right out the stores boxes and it had me thinking if it would hurt the grade because its not actually affecting the comic but if pressing can straighten that out then that really helps put my mind at ease sending off some of these basic DC covers (Specifically the second print of Nightwing 79 💪)

I still think it's funny how we all used to feel like polybagged comics were worthless if removed from the bag. It's better that we open them now, I think, because now they can be read. Though I do wish that the graders had a way of keeping inserts with them.

You learned something valuable, and thanks for passing it on. People think polybagged comics will be perfect, yet the longer those comics are in polybags, the more harm done. I have heard that the polybags deteriorating can damage the paper of the comic as well.

Great stuff! I bought a Ren & Stimpy Show 1 newsstand a couple of months ago that came in a poly bag. This is for my PC. I wanted to display it, so I removed it from the bag. If I ever want to get it graded down the road, I’ll be sure that it’s pressed beforehand.
@highvoltagemark98703 жыл бұрын
The reason the grade is so harsh is because the crease affects every page in the book. So as a whole every page has an indentation / crease which detracts from the over all grade in aggregate. Hope this helps . I’m a fan of your videos, keep up the great work.
@josephsokolowski2713 жыл бұрын
I want to thank you for this video my friend. I have never heard of this “problem” with such a harsh penalty for books like this in poly bags. Especially this monster modern key. I just dug out my raw copy of Ultimate Fallout #4 three weeks ago and it looks phenomenal sitting in its poly bag, which itself is bagged and boarded. But now I had to check out my copy for sure and of course I have the poly bad dent right down the middle of my otherwise perfect beauty. I’m glad I know now before I even think about sending it to be graded one day I need a professional press. I will forever be in your debt for this most useful information. Thank you so so so much.

Well, got my books back today, and sure enough, there was a giant crease down the middle of both the front and back cover of my newsstand polybagged X-Force 1. Got a 9.2 from PGX (no haters here, this was my first time using them, I have to learn somehow, right?). Anyways, it makes sense that the seam on the polybag, which is super thick, could impress on the back of the book it was covering, while my other bagged issue of X-Force 1 in front of it in the longbox impressed its polybag seam into the front of the graded book. Needless to say, I'm just starting out, getting the feel for the grading companies, the comics I send in raw, and currently researching the pressing/cleaning techniques that many collectors use. So, I call it a learning experience for sure. Isn't it ironic, though, that at one time you were told to keep the book in the bag so it doesn't lose it's value. Nowadays, it's more valuable out of the bag and in a slab. Funny how these things change. Anyhow, great video. Keep 'em coming!

Thank you so much for this video. I just got a group of comics back from CGC yesterday and 1 of them was a poly bagged Spider-Man #1. I got a 9.2 on it. I looked at the back and saw the same poly bag impression on it. Otherwise the comic was perfect, so that explains it. I have 2 more Spider-Man #1 (newsstand version and the silver Canadian version). I cut them both out of the poly bag this morning and took them to my LCS to get pressed. Saw they both are perfect, but have the same thing on the back. Hope the press seals the deal for 9.8’s on them. Thanks again. This was great info to now have in my back pocket. You rule!!

That light indentation seems almost like a production flaw. An 8.5 would have been enough punishment("correctional process"?). But now we know: buy ALL the 7.5's, crack, press and send in for slabbing! There's many of the collectable cards that come in the '90's polybagged comics that are worth a lot. If you are lucky, they could pay for the book and more. Several of those cards-graded/slabbed-have sold for hundred$ or for thou$and$ for perfect 10.0s this year. But I wonder if it's possible to find both a 9.8 worthy comic book bagged with a 10.0 trading card. That would be uncanny luck.
@MintHunterComics3 жыл бұрын
It IS harsh I feel. 7.5 is brutal. Yes any comics with cards, poltbags, window bags for too long will have indentations that need to be pressed out

You should do a followup video with new grade. Hope you get a 9.8. As a pressor, FYI, UF4 sometimes needs to be pressed 2-3 times to get the indentation out. Even then, the indentation can be too deep and not come out completely so no guarantee on the 9.8 but definitely better than 7.5.
@MintHunterComics3 жыл бұрын
That makes me a bit cautious - maybe I'll make a note for them to press it a few times

@MintHunterComics3 жыл бұрын
Oh man... me too haha - but now we know!
@Supertomscustoms3 жыл бұрын
The irony is that once it’s slabbed the poly bag crease is probably hardly noticeable. It’s also odd that the grading companies will accept bindery tears and miswraps in 9.8s but not waviness or this polybag crease which are also results of the manufacturing process.

It's interesting how 1. Removing books from polybags (for grading) will reduce the overall population of polybagged books, and will most likely increase their value in the long run. 2. the condition of sealed bags enclosing a product is very important in the video game market, so it's interesting that here it isn't considered, that feels like it could be a mistake.

Very curious what grade you will get when you press and resubmit. Based on the other comments here, it seems CGC's standard hit for the poly bag crease may be more like 8.5 or 9.0, which would indeed seem more reasonable than your experience. I can more than understand that - the only problem is through time that crease will get harsher and harsher and indent the comic more and more :(

How do you press your books? And is it possible to press a book without expensive machines?

Google "comic books pressers" and just follow their steps!

You post auctions anywhere? Or any recommended online sellers? I'm like a hundred issues deep into my ASM collection.

I do! when CGC decides to actually give me my books back! hahaha

Is it worth keeping the old polybags once the books are removed? Especially ones with printing on them? Or just toss/recycle 'em?

Not particularly

My LCS was selling Ultimate Fallout for $475. Don’t remember the grade.

Hey that's a good price in any grade! hahaha

Should u keep them in the poly bag or take it out if your not sending it in to be graded and just store it in just bag and board and remove poly bag
@MintHunterComics Жыл бұрын
I still say take it out. It’ll sit and get worse over time
