I got a rehomed quarantine puppy in February. He’s about a year and a half now, and he did have pretty major separation anxiety when I first got him. I work at a vet clinic and we have boarding kennels so as long as we have an empty kennel I’m allowed to bring him with me, so I started working with him by leaving him in the kennels for longer and longer periods, and then starting leaving him at home for gradually lengthening periods of time. And now he does so much better away from me. I’ve also been taking him to dog parks and meeting up with friends who have dogs to try and help socialize him better. And he’s made so much progress. I’m so happy about that.

I've got/look after a malti-poodle cross and he's the same way 12 years later and hates baths- more specifically he hates me bathing him as he's perfectly fine with a groomer and knows not to misbehave around people he doesn't know as well. Apart from being a 18lb bag of anxiety riddled mess with separation issues when my parents leave me to look after him, he's otherwise and excellent dog when it comes to being near small animals, chickens, children and other dogs.

My neighbor has an 11 year old golden retriever. They were in quarantine, she worked from home and they were together all day. After a long time, when the neighbor finally went to work in person, the retriever stayed at home and barked a lot. I texted her and asked if everything was okay because her dog was really barking for a long time. When the neighbor returned home, she found her jacket torn into small pieces all over the house. She sad, that it was her first day at her job and her dog has never done that before, even though he is 11 years old.

Yes! From deshedding to face cleaning. Dogs need constant care even if it is less often than what we do for ourselves. I got left with this dog and TikTok showed me how much care a dog needs. Right now I'm still struggling to train my dog that grinding her nails can be stress free. I'm only at the point where I can hold her paw while the machine is on. She tolerates everything like brushing her teeth but something about her paws just makes her freak out and the vet says it's just something she just does not like. It's work.

Both me and my dad got dogs during quarantine. Mine were planned, as in I was already planning on rescuing 2 greyhounds the summer of lockdown 1. My dad was more spur of the moment. It definitely shows. He got a high energy GSD puppy that now has severe separation anxiety and freaks out when left alone and is dog reactive. I chose adult greyhound to avoid this, because they tend to be very well socialized and crate trained before being adopted. This is why researching and understanding animal behavior is so important before committing to a dog for life.

We have a "quarantine kitten." He was kind'a terrified of strangers when we adopted him, but at the time we had friends over very regularly - and worked outside of the house - so I figured that we'd get him socialized over time, no big deal. We adopted him in September of 2019. *sigh* He does seem to remember and be more comfortable with several of the people he met the most in his first six months, which is pretty impressive since he didn't see them at all for over a year out of his 2 and a half. That also tells me that I was probably right that we would have gotten him over it with time, if 2020 had not been so 2020...

Cats are finicky and he may never get over stranger danger. I've got a 7 year old who is terrified of loud noises, new noises, and all strangers. Took him ages to warm up to my sister, brother in law, and their 4 kids when they lived with me for 1.5 years during the pandemic. Our 12 year old recognized my brother in law and was happy to get pets from him the other day. She hadn't seen him in months. The 7 year old on the other hand was terrified of him

I was really lucky to be warned about this very scenario from my puppy’s trainer when I enthusiastically told her I was able to start staying home with him in 2019. She said if I didn’t help him establish his own independent nature away from me a few hours a day he would be a nervous wreck if I ever decided or had to go back to work at an office. Thank goodness I listened to her 😳 He has some anxiety issues right now as my husband and son are out of the house now during the day but getting better. I couldn’t imagine how anxious he’d be if I hadn’t had the foresight and ability to get him trained and socialized!

She gets incredibly anxious and destructive when I’m not around, since this became a huge deal now that we can go out with family/friends, we decided to start separating me from her (not the other way around 😂). I’m with my quarantine puppy right now, and she also suffers with separation anxiety. Thankfully, my mom works at home so she’s always with someone, but we were unable to socialize her properly and now she barks and growls at people on walks and at the door. She’s a tiny sheltie who loves people otherwise though, so once they come in the door she’s all over them with kisses.

When I was on lockdown in PR, my grandmother's dog had puppies pretty spontaneously. We kept one out of the four that lived, and I knew that because we couldn't really go out that she wouldn't end up being socialized-Something that became very apparent when I tried to take her to the beach one time, where she ended up barking at just about every dog we came across. While I miss her very much ever since I moved out of PR, I seriously have some regret that I couldn't have her properly socialized.

I had the strange fortune of adopting a dog just before the pandemic got really bad. He wasn't intended to be a pandemic puppy, but he got stuck with that fate. I'm lucky that since we have frequent visits from family, he's at least somewhat well socialized (at least with people. For dogs I feel like he missed the window and it's unfortunate). Also lucky that he legitimately enjoys his time with his groomer, so hopefully she doesn't have as hard a time as this. I could imagine he'd be just as anxious as this poor little pup if things hadn't worked out how they had.

My sisters dog likes it when I sit nearby and talk to her (although I'm not sure, the dog never confirms, but she seems calmer.) However, I can imagine a groomingsalon has no time and people for that. I know someone with a quarantaine puppy that hasn't been socialized or trained, only cuddled and played with and she has taught herself to run home whenever she feels like it, even if she's on a field, next to a busy street with racing cars and/or a street with people and children, she just takes off and doesn't listen to her name. No training, no 'wait' or 'come!' and she's a massive puppy with the strength of a big dog.

It can be caused by multiple different things. Dry eyes, allergies to food or surroundings such as dust, pollen, plastic bowls, deficiency on vitamins or fats etc, high stress levels, water. You just have to try and see what helps. I've heard from many bichon, maltese and havanese breeders that chicken is the main culprit, but it's not even alway that.

I live in an apartment that has a door separating the main living area from the bedrooms that I closed, so I usually left them there while I stayed in my room. I leave them there for several hours and I only go to the living room/kitchen when I needed to. My dog was fine. My cat did have some separation issues when I first got him. He’d scratch the door trying to get to the bedrooms but I wouldn’t let him in. I also started to crate train him since I’ll be moving soon and it’ll be necessary. He even goes in by himself now. After a few months, I had to return to the office, but thankfully I only had to go in a couple days a week. We also lived 10 minutes away from my work, so I'd run home on my lunch break to give him attention and let him out if needed. And I slowly stopped doing that until he would go all day without us coming home. I feel it really helped in the long run, especially because he use to whine if he'd see my husband leave (he still does this, but only if he's outside at the same time. If he's inside, he could care less)

I've had a dog for over a year before lockdown but my dog still developed separation anxiety during it. Lucky he is never alone more than 3h and it's usually while he is sleeping. As a senior dog we just want him to live in all the comfort till the end of his time and trainers in my area use training tactics that are not fit for a fearful not-aggressive dog (thing of Cesar Milan who just imposes fear in the dog and destroys the bond). For an anxious dog the worst thing is to be completely by himself and nothing to distract him so remember to always leave a toy or, in case your dog doesn't like toys like mine leave the radio on an at least a small light.

I feel like my pupper (7 yo terrier mix) did the opposite in quarantine... He used to really stick to my parents and I before Covid (Had to be in the same room, bumped his snoot for scratches every 10 minutes, slept on the same bed with at least 1 part of his body touching, etc.) But a year into quarantine and now he needs personal time (Chills in his own room during the day, only asks for scratches once every couple hours, sleeps in his own bed at night...) Given we used to only exercise him 2 hours a day and now it's closer to 4, but I kinda miss his neediness :'''''D

Our calico cat is the same way. We adopted her in the summer of 2020 as a kitten. We were literally in the house with her 24/7 for over half her life, and when our social schedule started opening back up, she had definite anxiety when we left and she does not like new people entering the house.

The original Angel Eyes formula worked great to eliminate the tear stains, and also yeast based ear infections in our maltese. The new formula (removed low dose antibiotic) works OK on the tear stains, but doesn't help much with the ear infections.

our cat - who we've had for years before the pandemic - has got a lot more anxious. if he's left alone, or thinks he's been left alone, he starts yowling and pacing. it breaks my heart. he'll settle down eventually but still. he used to not really care at all but now being left alone is horrifying.

My life feels like a low security prison since it's almost like I've been in lockdown for 7 years after the death of my friend, my ex cheating and abusing me and losing my job I've become completely isolated I can't even find a job because i live so remote and can't drive. It's one thing i have to suffer like this but knowing dogs do too depresses me more. I hope these dogs get the help and love they need

I think realistically (I could 100% be wrong as I’m just going on my personal experience) that tear stains can be avoided by simply using a tissue and removing those little black/brown/whatever color boogers from your dog’s eyes while they’re there before they get stuck to the fur. My husky’s eyes have zero stains and I think it’s simply due to taking care of it before it sets in. My friends’ malamutes and Huskies all have tear stains varying in “length” down the muzzle depending on how often they remove them

Anxiety in dogs is pretty common, even in non-lockdown context. Even the best owner could need to deal with it. The important thing is that these dogs are given a home and that the owners must be responsible and train and educate properly their dogs. It was very difficult in a lockdown setting, but Patch (the doggie in the vid) seems to be learning to deal with his stress by going to different places and interacting with new people :)

I have a Shih Tzu mix breed and he hates water and being brushed so I have the groomer keep his fur short. He absolutely loves people and if someone would break into my home he would welcome them excitedly. I got him via a friend of mine at the start of the covid pandemic and he was 3 years old. He hates dogs he doesn’t know so it’s not much fun taking him for a walk because he wants to attack them. I take him for a walk 4 times a day and that includes a visit to the dog park. When I let him loose in the dog park it’s not quite as bad, especially when I talk to the other dog’s owner. I have now started to reward him with treats for not barking at other dogs and it helps if I offer the treat before he sees the other dog and then when he sees the other dog I give him another treat and tell him he’s a good dog. Yesterday I forgot the 2nd treat and he wouldn’t walk any further until I gave him the 2nd treat. I forgot to mention his aggressiveness is worse when he is on a leash.

Tear staining: I hear (dried) liver in their diet helps. Also a food that's grain free & especially yeast free, maybe a probiotic would help too. Also, there's these eye wipes I buy at Petco made by Angels Eyes. They remove the tear staining pretty well. I cut them in half (the round wipes) because I have a small dog so the jar lasts longer too. Also, if they're on a more raw or raw freeze dried diet they seem to get less or no tear staining.

My dad already works from home so there wasn't too much quarantine adjustment for my pets. The big thing was actually for me being used to the fact that a dog or cat could interrupt me at any time while I was doing something.

This is so weird, I've literally started dog walking a 11mo puppy of the exact same breed, whose lovely owner contacted me because the pup suffers from bad separation anxiety! I took him (the dog) out the other day, it took him 30mins to walk to the park which is 5 minutes away (lots of treats were involved) and 7 mins to trot back to his house! Hoping he's more confident next time. He's an adorable pup.

Yeah my poor pup I got February and he bonded to me so hard that when I started going back to work in May/June he had serious separation anxiety. I have worked to socialize him more but he is still stuck to my hip. He enjoys baths during the groom but when it comes to nail clipping he is an absolute hassle and a half. I figure I keep working with him he will develop into a less anxious guy.

Of course he's going to show anxiety. First of all he's out of his comfort zone, namely his house. Secondly, he is having invasive procedures done to his body as he perceives it. Lastly, he seems to be somewhat Young which means his anxiety is going to be worse. In other words, he's reacting the same way a human would under the same circumstances.

lol, I keep thinking you would have loved to have done my dog. I had a Shi Tzu who would just stand there and look at you with this hurt look. as long as you didn't turn your back on him he'd stay in the tub, but god forbid once your not watching him he'd try to make a break for it! My favorite part was the blow drying of his underside and legs. he'd lay back in my lap, go completely limp and just let me do it. He even snorted a few times, he loved to get his belly dried that much😂

This is why when i was working at a kennel free dog daycare and boarding facility through the peak of covid (and before that. I worked there for two years) we were trying to tell pup parents that just because you're home doesn't mean you shouldn't take your dog to dog daycare anymore. They need the socialization and once things open back up, they will develope anxiety ...
