Ahh, so that's the perspective from the Western of the November battle in Surabaya. We Indonesian still celebrates 10 November as the Day of Heroes to commemorate the resistance. In our perspective (at least from what I learned in high school), the Allies troops came to Surabaya to take over the control, and was piggybacked by the Dutch. The main battle happened in the Hotel Orange (Yamato during Japanese, and Majapahit nowadays) where the Dutch flag was raised. This is the one that provoked many Indonesian to see that the Dutch is trying to regain control in the newly independent Indonesia.
@HistoryHustle4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your perspective on this. Since it wasn't the focus point of this episode I didn't elaborate too much on this battle. It were indeed Dutch civilians that raised the Dutch flag on what is now Hotel Majapahit. This angered a lot of Indonesians who then climbed up to tear the blue part of the flag. Later the British arrived. For some reason - I believe even today people speculate about this - something went wrong and it escalated in a full scale battle between the British and Indonesians.
@GilangMentariHamidy4 жыл бұрын
@@HistoryHustle yeah perhaps there are lots of trust issues between Indonesians and the Allies. Hence, it escalated into a full-scale war. Moreover, East Java people is culturally known to be more direct and strong in a sense of pride, solidarity, and nationalism. Unlike the people from Central Java which is known to be reserved and self-surpressing. Therefore, it is no wonder that Surabaya and East Java people can be mobilized easily against the Allies forces.

History Hustle Roeslan Abdulgani gives more prespective, at first he as radio operator gives instruction to the british, like how the landing supposed to be etc. The british didn’t want to be ‘ordered’ and just landed immediately. This considered offensive act by Indonesians, which they responded by attacking.

Videos like these strike a chord within me, a painful one at that. The Dutch people and media far too often forget about the indigenous troops who fought tooth and nail for the Crown, people whose language they couldn't even speak. People forget about it and try and move on, but there are still thousands of descendants of indigenous veterans who still feel the brutal pain every single day. It hurts that the Netherlands tries to forget, it really does.

My grandfather was put to work on the Pakan Baroe railway, and then fought under Westerling as a sniper. The disparity between what I've heard from my family, what I had to find out for myself, and what I've been taught in history class has made me quite skeptical to the way our government treats history. The man had some stories to tell, and none were particularly pleasant. It was only a few years ago that the contributions of Moluccan soldiers was even recognized by the government.

@@HistoryHustle My family has a peculiar history. The nuclear bombs saved my grandfather's life, as the Japanese were planning on killing all POW's, but his brother was imprisoned at Nagasaki (though I haven't been able to find his name) and died from radiation poisoning. The other half of the family spent the war in Poland, so I tend to not feel much for all the stuff surrounding the may days. The war must have left a peculiar scar on the Dutch psyche that the people felt such a need to shrink it down to only this small country, and to lionize the rather mundane suffering and courage of the ordinary citizen. More a scar of humiliation than of injury, despite the Famine doing a good job at getting some real numbers going.

I am a Canadian, and I’ve always been very proud of Canada’s role in liberating the Netherlands. I am also the grandson of a Holocaust refugee. My paternal grandmother was a German Jew who managed to escape Nazi Germany in 1938 to flee to Canada. I heard that she was one of the last Jews to escape Germany, and one of the very few that Canada accepted. What has always bothered me was the level of collaboration that the Dutch had with the Nazis, and the huge number of Dutch Jews who were liquidated because of that collaboration. I do, and will continue to love the Netherlands, but there will always be that uneasy feeling I have when I reflect on that history. My last trip to Amsterdam, I visited the Anne Frank House. I have travelled to the Netherlands twice, and I look forward to my next trip there.

Thank you ever so much for your video. I am very interested in WW2, especially in Asia. You do a really important work, reminding of the suffering of all these victims of the barbarity of the Japanese "liberators" of Asia. Colonialism or not, I find unforgivable the collaboration with the Japanese occupants (in Indonesia, but also in Burma - Myanmar, Malaysia, etc.), especially that in these countries, the JIA made more victims among the native population for a few years, than the colonial powers for centuries. Do you know any Dutch films about the Japanese occupation ? I watched several British and Australian movies and series, but could not find Dutch productions on KZbin. Could you recommend me some titles, if possible with English or French subtitles ? Dank u zeer (my Dutch is extremely limited).
